Usually I don't do that much on facebook, especially when it comes to saying happy birthday to every motherfucker who adds me just cause facebook tells me that it's their birthday, so this morning was extra strenuous for me. After browsing around here I go hit up the facebook and before the newsfeed of dumb crap even loads the birthdays are there.
Today there were three birthdays and they first read like this: Highschool friend I ran into at bar on Thursday; some chick from work who i dont have to say happy birthday to; third name I'm not reading cause I'm definitely saying happy birthday to the first guy. So I click him name and just give him a "happy birthday pimpin," easy, chill, called him pimpin. I was pleased. Then I went back to my main newsfeed and realized just who that third name was.
This was by far the funniest and coolest boss ever. And by boss I mean he was one of my bosses. So I was really stuck pondering what to write on his wall. I know he's gonna have some sort of crazy blank-cheque birthday party tonight but it's work~ Gotta be descreet. Maybe I should say "You can cry if you want to" cause all we do is talk about older pop culture, but, I knew it didn't go with the crazy night he was gonna have. So I said fuck it and put "I don't know what to say." But now~ Surely the other person from work would notice me saying happy birthday to him but not her.
So I clicked her name and surely there were assloads of birthday wishes. I see another girl from work post "Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day!" I won't say I've never done a "+1" on the internet before but bam, +1'd a happy birthday.
I thought of how very insincere the +1 was, although the thing I +1'd was the nicest of the facebook happy birthdays, but really does anyone else find it annoying!? Or even on their birthday, see the pointlessness of it. Or does it make you happy when you see a person throw a HB at you even though you havn't spoken to them in... possibly forever depending on how you use your facebook.

I've put the wrong date in Facebook, so only my true friends who know when my birthday actually is wish me a happy birthday. My point is, whatever the words you use, people who wish you a happy birthday only because Facebook says it's their birthday are fucking hypocrites and I hate that.

I look forward to seeing who writes happy birthday to me, on some weird high school popularity contest level (the majority of my facebook contacts are high school friends i never really talk to save seeing them at some part-time job around town), but I generally don't write on people's pages for their birthday unless I'm pretty close with them.

The fact that you think this deeply into something as inane as a fb birthday post worries me. And that you'd agonize over what to write to another dude, then write something as sexually vulnerable sounding as "I don't know what to say" is just plain creepy.

if you want them to notice your birthday wish send an email or a direct message and include something other than "happy birthday"

It means a lot to me when ppl write bd wishes on my wall, because I don't celebrate in real life.

For people i care i won't use facebook to wish them a happy birthday, or i'll use the facebook PM if i don't feel like calling/sending a text message. when i say happy birthday on a wall it's definetely for somebody that i don't care that much but that i had some good time with.
Fuck it, just do it the right way - ie not on facebook or not at all since you would never had wished any of them a happy birthday without facebook probably.

What else to do after a wake and bake on a fine Sabbath morning? I actually put "I don't know what to say -" if that makes it less sexually vulnerable. Me being an sexually invulnerable male I don't really question if the things I type make me look sexually vulnerable. I know I got issues, but that's not one of them. I hardly ever say happy birthday on Facebook, it's not very personal, and if you really cared about the person, at least call them up to wish them a happy birthday, or even text. Text is probably in this case better than happy birthday on Facebook, because you at least sort of had to take the effort to pull out your phone and text (not very much effort), instead of going oh look, its someone who I haven't reallyu talked to in awhile's birthday, lets wish him or her a happy birthday alongside the 50 other people.

i network alot on FB so there is alot of people i dont know in the list. If someone i actually know or someone i have networked with alot has bd, i just throw in a happy birthday to them. Otherwise i usually ignore it. They probably have someone else caring for them anyway

Yeah pretty much. I don't understand why people do this. Do they think it's being thoughtful or do they realize how pointless and meaningless it is but still do it?
Hey, thanks for saying "happy birthday" and nothing else, person who I barely knew in high school and hasn't spoken to me since except for 2 words once a year. No, I don't need that. Take my birthday off facebook a few days prior to it, and only those who actually care will write something. The only problem is that since facebook is now the ultimate stalking tool, people see one person that posts and then realize it's my birthday and that cascades into the same result as before, but at least to a lesser extent.

It means something to me because no one seems to actually remember at school, but then they write it when they get home and I can pretend they care for a couple of fleeting, precious moments >.<

Next time you see them at work, wish them a belated birthday.
Any problems relating to Facebook is horrendously trivial to the point that I sigh to now exhale every breath.
