I have come to the realisation that I am not alone in the way I post without posting. This may cause you to scratch your head and ask the question.

"What is posting without posting?"

Whenever I read a thread and there is a lot of information or misinformation that makes my blood boil I tend to get a reply to the thread or poster ready to go.

I can spend anywhere form 10 seconds to 10 minutes writing out a post that will let people know of my true feelings on the subject (judgement clouded by the boiling blood in my veins.) It feels great to be hammering these thoughts out into actual characters on a screen as I get ready to end the post and let loose this rage! I decide to re-read what I just wrote out and make sure there are no newbie spelling mistakes that can get me flamed. As I carefully go through this post I am digesting my words that have released the fury inside of me. By time I get to the end of the proof read I have had time to digest what I just wrote out and the logical side of my brain starts to take over and tells me...

Example of what people may look like just before the calm side of the mind takes over.

"Why the fuck would you post that?" (not exact words, but close).

I take a minute or two staring at the screen with my mouse hovering over the post button and then I make the snap call and move the mouse to the back button or to a new thread on the sidebar. I feel much better at relieving myself of the rage that built up reading the posts that got me into the mood in the first place.

I then continue to browse TL like nothing has happened, in my happy state of mind.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone else had this experience or posting practice? How many posts on TL never get posted?

P.S: Yes I know a few of them get through my logical calm side of the brain and get posted(my posting history is not squeeky clean) but I have a feeling a lot are stopped. (No I did not proof read this one because it is my blog!)

As a statement of support, nobody should post his reply to this blog (but write it out!)

But yeah, I do that mostly on opinion pieces where I am unsure if my opinion is even needed.

Many SC2 bashing posts by me never get posted, yet I post one or another and then I get banned for that.

Its just better to not post a rage post, just ignore it.

Yeah I know the feeling, happens to me quite a bit. I think it's a good thing because i don't like post whoring and NOT shitting up Teamliquid with pointless or derailing posts is a good thing for all of us. It's even in the 10 commendments I think, in fact I'm going to look this up as soon as I've finished writing this.

Everyone who aspires to be a great poster here needs to do it as far as I'm concerned

heh, you have no idea how often I do that. I haven't done it lately so much, but that is definitely something I have made quite a habit of doing. Most of the time though, I get rid of posts simply because I have nothing reasonable to contribute or because what I was going to say was just straight up dumb. Only once or twice have I had to get rid of a rage post before I let it get out of my hands

In fact, this is the like, 5th rendition of this post lol

I do this so often, to the point that I don't really post much any more except in selected threads.

Most of the time, it's just not worth it...

Mostly in SC2 and sometimes general threads, I post, (or I refrain to at the last second ).

And then think

Why the fuck am I posting this, noone is going to read it anyway, it will be drowned in a sea of other comments.

It happens to me all the time, especially in the non BW forums. I start typing a post, then think "do I really want to get into that argument?". I mean if you want to argue correctly, you'd better read the 20 pages of arguments that have already been used, be ready to argue further with people who will disagree etc. I usually just close the browser tab haha.

That's the reason I am mostly inactive in the General forum.

I often times write out replies, then just say "fuck" and go back. And I still haven't escaped the banhammer as much as I would have liked to .

Yes, I do that very often. In fact, I wrote a lengthy reply to this thread and ended up replacing it with this because I wasn't happy with what I wrote. It's pretty annoying. D:

Very interesting to see how many people actually do this. I don't have a specific area of the forum I avoid like the plague, well maybe the SC2 strategy forum because I just don't read any of it at all. During my day @ work I will stay in the blogs, closed threads and website feedback for the most part.

I do this on a semi-regular basis, and it seems to work, I haven't quite managed to cross any lines yet. It's kind of difficult sometimes, to try and find the wording to express my disdain without going too far.

Another good trick is to find someone else who's been beating their head against the same brick wall of a poster, and PM them to get in a giggle about the person.

Yeah I do this regularly.

On a related note. Sometimes I will writing up a nice reply to someone who clearly doesn't understand TL etiquette. I put the time and effort to find the right informative links and add in the correct formatting.

Read, and re-read to make sure I am not insulting the poor guy. Press the send button and then nothing.

Damn thread is closed. Grrrrrrr.

I do that about half the time, mostly in the general forum when people are talking about things they dont understand.

Basically anytime i write negatively about a person I will wind up not posting it. Usually just not worth it.

Being the lurker that i am, I often don't find i could even contribute to the thread much. Often i will right something out, read it over, realize how worthless it is (i.e Macro better advice), and then just not post.

So not the same thing is in "rage" replying into not posting, just not posting for fear of not helping thread at all -_-

I have had a few of those for sure. It comes down to will this post help out the original post's discussion or not? If I answer yes then I will post, if I answer no i usually do not post, if it is inbetween I have a 50-50 chance of posting or not posting.

I usually try and stay clear of responding to people who will never change there opinion. An example of this is the BW vs SC2 zealots. One person from each side will be so adamant that one is the best and the other is complete garbage, they will never change their opinions, but they seem to keep on posting the same garbage at each other with a ton of anger making the thread turn to shit in no time.

I solved this problem by only reading factual threads (R&S, LR, news/announcement, and media thread OPs) and blogs. The BW forums are still good (unless there's something that deals with Blizz/Kespa or SC2) but relatively slow. Most threads in the SC2 forums are not worth reading, let alone responding to.

I would go back to the way it was my first few years at TL, when I didn't even bother making an account, but I can't give up FPL.

Spat out my drink (edit: through my nose).

Ehem. Same situation as the OP at times (especially when the thread/post previous mine involves player bashing). I know I won't ever post a flame-ridden reply, but it's cathartic to write it out and just let loose before deleting the post.

This happens to me and I end up not posting anything. Usually I don't actually finish writing the post though.

Same as you I get annoyed at some retarded posts in a thread and want to replay explaining how noob they are. But about half way through writing the post I realize that it will take another 5 or 10 minutes to finish writing my post and there seems little point finishing it.

Once the annoyance fades I start thinking that there is little chance the they will even see my post. Even if they did I start to wonder why I am wasting my time trying to explain things to some random noobs on the internet. Nothing has gotten through to them so far and I doubt my post going to change that.
