I'm done with school for the time being and I'm looking for something to watch in my new-found spare time. NASL seems to have come at a perfect moment for me, but I'm also interested in some non-SC2 entertainment.
I'm specifically asking for anime because I feel I was unfair to it for most of my life. Other than the Pokemon/Digimon that every kid watched, the only anime I was interested it was Gundam Wing during its run on TV some 11 years ago. I absolutely loved it, but never got into anime after it ended. I always thought of it was too dorky, even for someone like me. Some kids at my high school would wear Naruto headbands at lunch and I was determined not to become one of "them".
However I recently got the urge to re-watch Gundam Wing. It had been 10 years since I last saw it and I wondered if it would hold up today. I also wanted to focus more on the story than the explosions, and to see the true ending as I had discovered there was a movie that takes place after the last episode. Once again I enjoyed every minute of it; I was even a bit sad when it was all over and + Show Spoiler +
And with that I thought I was done with anime. I re-watched my favorite childhood show and there was nothing left for me to do. That was until I miraculously stumbled upon Trinity Blood.
Holy shit.
Trinity Blood absolutely blew my mind. From the first time I saw the intro I was hooked. The action, the characters, the dialogue: it was stunning. I was quite literally devastated when I found out the creator died before he could finish the plot. And now it's all over. Although short-lived, Trinity Blood has opened my eyes to anime, and now I'm looking for more.
So finally to the whole point of this blog... I need suggestions on what to watch. The only criteria is that someone who only watched Gundam Wing and Trinity Blood (Afro Samurai too if that counts), will want to watch it.
I tried to search for similar shows myself, but without success. I watched 1 episode of Witchblade and 10 seconds of Chrono Crusade (most annoying voice ever) before I decided they weren't for me. I am currently 3 episodes into Ergo Proxy which is the best that I have found so far, but I would still like your suggestions TL!

If you liked Gundam Wing, you most likely will enjoy Gundam 00! And in that respect, maybe Code Geass S1 as well.
Here is my MAL. http://myanimelist.net/profile/ChibiAyame I recommend everything that I rated a 9 or a 10. Just click on the anime and make sure it's to a genre of your liking.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Literally is a life changing show. I could try and explain how-so, but mere words can not truly encompass the awesome of TTGL

Well Akira s a movie, but my favourite movie of all time, it's a fun thing to watch for an evening, and is something that i believe every anime fan should watch.

Since you liked Trinity Blood:
Trigun Hellsing (There are two version of this, an older TV series and a currently running direct to DVD/BD release)
Generally good series that you will likely like but unrelated to the ones mentioned in OP:
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (The most well liked action anime series.) Eve no Jikan (alt. "Time of Eve" One of the best Sci Fi anime out there, there is both a movie and OVA [direct to dvd/BD], they tell roughly the same story, so either one or both is fine) Cross Game (The most well liked sports anime. It has a lot of emotions and is a good example of this anime genre.) Nodame Cantabile (One of the most liked comedies in anime. It has a decent plot, many good jokes and great music.) Macross Zero and/or Macross F (A mecha anime with a different take on the genre compared to Gundam. Macross is probably the second largest franchise in mecha anime.)
After those, come back and tell us in which direction to suggest since it is hard to suggest based of 2 series. ^^

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagannn Eyeshield 21 (Manga only. Best manga ever imo) Baccano (Watch the Dub) Clannad (first season is largely-harem style) Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (mystery/horror) Hayate The Combat Butler (screwball action comedy)
|
Zeta Gundam (best Gundam series ever) Code Geass (season 1, season 2 kind of dissapointing) Gundam 00 Macross series (the whole series are pretty good) Gundam Unicorn (OVA, 3 episodes released so far)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - one of the few shows in the Mecha genre that I enjoyed, a lot of people consider it an all-time classic.
Cowboy Bebop - It's a space western, a compelling personal story from the POV of several characters.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - a little old, with a choppy animation, but the story compensate greatly for it. Although be warn, since this is a reallly long series you may want to leave it for last. Also, keep in mind that some people are calling it "The last anime you will watch.", since after it your expectations story-wise skyrocket.
Anything from Makoto Shinkai , admitedly he makes movies. If you haven't watch movies from Hayao Miyazaki you may want to do that as well.
Samurai Champloo - from the creator of Cowboy Bebop, with nearly the same quality story-wise. It doesn't take itself seriously as Cowboy Bebop, but it compensate for that with a lot of good humor.
Why am I recommending these. A lot of anime shows require that you are familiar with the genre or are tailored specifically for the fans. I am recommending shows that have reached classical status, or are of the higher quality and do not require you to be familiar with the genre. Also, all of them (Legends of the Galactic Heroes excluded) can be watched in reasonable time-frame).
Edit:
Note: I saw some people recommending Baccano - it's a great show, but like Fooly Cooly you don't want to watch it without being used to the genre. Also, if you decide to watch Code Geass, stop after season 1, the second season...the less said about it the better.

Z Gundam and Gundam 08th MS Team are amazing, definitely watch those. I actually just saw the first episode of gundam Unicorn last night and it was sick.

Yeah, maybe it will be better if I say names rather than authors. The above ones are from Hayao Miyazaki. From Makoto Shinkai you may want to watch:
Voices of a Distant Star The Place Promised in Our Early Days 5 Centimeters Per Second

The World God Only Knows. It might be weird at first, but trust me, it's just hilarious and worth to watch. There are 12 episodes, but (according to Wikipedia), Season 2 is scheduled to begin on the 12th.

This is is excellent, although I'd like to add one more.
Gungrave is an amazing anime. It ranks #3 on my personal list... It's hard to describe how you feel when you watch it. You see characters develop and understand the themes of the story... Throughout the anime you'll notice things that the main character does and makes decisions for other people... but when he has to go make those decisions himself it becomes a lot tougher. It's hard to describe without spoiling it for you, but you definitely HAVE TO WATCH IT.

Rule of thumb, never recommend weird things to new comers.

Out of the animes I have watched, I would recommend:
Toradora! Death Note
Death Note is a classic, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

Toradora is a classic at this point too it seems. If I had to decide arbitrarily what defined a "REAL watcher of anime" I'd say you would have had to watch both of those.

A lot have been mentioned already that I'll say but alas.
TTGL Code Geass Death Note Gundam Seed Gintama Sengoku Basara Darker Than Black Durarara

Trinity Blood blew your mind? Ha ha, that anime is so bad.

Why would you have to watch such an anime(Toradora!)? A real anime fan is someone who doesn't just watch anime which were produced in the last three years...and it's also someone who doesn't restrict himself to only one or two genres.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - a little deep but I think my all time fav anime. I'm sad it hasn't been mentioned yet
TTGL / Death Note / Code Geass / FMA:Brotherhood / D.Gray-Man / Fairy Tail
lol @ Death Note being a classic. It came out in 07. It's really good but its modern..
NGE.
Edit: Oh ya, recently I blew through the Hellsing OVAs they have out (8 was last I saw) and holy shit were they awesome. I liked Hellsing back in the day but thought it ended kinda weak. The OVAs are like an answered prayer. Recommend that to any fans of the original series (or who just like vampires guns and non-gayness)
