I remember back in China there is this guy on our floor who plays doom2 and I always watched him play (I'm too scared to play back in the days) and that animation is so engrained in my mind... It's a simple animations, choppy, maybe a total of 4 frames but it so succinctly captured all there is to a reload. He pop open the chamber, you see a flash of hand where you inserts the shells, and flips them back close. Super crisp and effective.
And just the sheer damage that gun dishes out OMFG. It's so amazing and very well worth the prolonged reload time.
So is there any awesome reload animation that you guys enjoy in video games? /and why?/ For me no doubt is the reload of this gun... mmm.
The ones I remember the most are probably guns from Half-life 2 and Perfect Dark. Both had a lot of great weapon reloading animations. The revolver in HL2 always seemed real because it had so much visual weight in the reload animation. It takes a really talented animator to recreate actual weight in 3D. The Perfect Dark alien weapons were cool because they would just absorb the ammo into random parts of the gun.
The shotgun from the Marathon series. It reloads in some really bizarre twirling motion where the chamber is cracked open halfway through the spin. To make it even weirder, you can dual wield shotguns. The way the guy manages to reload the shotguns without any free hands while twirling it just defies comprehension.
I, too, love a shotgun reload. I love the Gears of War 2 shotty.
I think they nailed a nice, solid sound effect for it (like everything else in the game). It's clunky and mechanical sounding. The motion is simple, but it gives off the impression of being well practiced (your model basically stares straight ahead throughout the motion), which makes sense because your characters have been fighting an war of attrition for years. I also like it that you can squeeze in reloads while doing all sorts of other shit, between rolls, while wallbouncing, while sprinting, etc. etc. Once again you know that your dude knows what he is doing.
And the active reload mechanic is the icing on the cake. Basically, if you hit the reload button again at the right time, you reload twice as fast and do more damage on the reloaded shots. But if you fuck up you jam your gun and reloading takes an unusually long time. It's a real risk-reward assessment for a novice Gears player. I just remember crossing that threshold of development where active reloading became a matter of course every time. You hit that bumper, slide those rounds in, and come back swinging hard. It's a beautiful thing and only heightens the sense of coolly handling a firearm under pressure that the reload animation already suggests.

I absolutely love this game. But I have yet to achieve vidmaster status.

I'm so glad M2 shotguns got posted. There is nothing like dual shotguns. Religious experience.

The rocket launcher of quakeworld. That weapon = Probably the best rocket launcher of all time, of all games

?? I always wondered how is that possible haha
oooh I get it. It's not reloading per se. He's just clearing the chamber with the empty shells with some lever action business. I believe in real life you still need to load the magazine when all the shells are fired. It seems in the game you only really clear the chamber but you don't reload. Watch this:
