I just made another mix and I'm pretty pleased because it was the first good one with my new set-up. Took me a bit of time to get used to it but now I feel quite comfortable with it and it's great. I definitely feel like my mixing has improved due to greater capabilities and control with my new gear.

This set includes quite a few older tracks that I had in my library that I had not played yet, along with quite a few recently-released ones. Starts quite progressive housey and gets more bassy throughout. Quite bassy actually, even the prog. aspects of it are quite bassy/electro. Definitely was fun to make and one of those sets that I preferred listening to louder than usual.

Oh another thing. I was asked by a couple people to start naming the tracks so they could remember them better. I've decided not to do that. Firstly I don't want to hype up my sets as if they are the most amazing thing ever with some cheesy name like "Energy" or something along those lines, that's best for actual track titles in my opinion. Secondly, I can't think of good, witty, titles anyway so a basic format of "date + genres of music" will have to do.

Again, comments and questions are appreciated, I like reading them!

edit:

I am using a new program that alters the volume of each individual song as well as does a couple other things. How is the volume in this set? In terms of the whole set being relatively the same volume. Need some feedback on this as it's an issue I've had troubles with.

I reccomend mixcrate.com if you also want to have another avenue to upload your mixes. It's primarily only Filipinos or local bay area DJs but hey getting play is getting play.

I got your last two some time ago, back when I was seriously starved for new music. They held me for a few months, and this one sounds like it's going to do the same.

Please do give it a try! I actually prefer not to give out tracklists in general. I feel that by putting up a tracklist, it kind of takes away the idea that the whole set is one song, as opposed to many tracks linked together. I've always found I prefer sets when I haven't seen the tracklist, so that's why I don't put them up. If there are tracks though that you really like and want to know the song titles of from it, I will definitely post those.

If there are volume issues use a compressor- instant problem solved.
Multiband if you want to be really fancy.

Well yeah the program I am using is a compressor, problem is that if i let it fully do it's job, the hard-hitting parts don't hit hard enough. Not sure how the multiband thing works, but if it involves going through each frequency of each track and altering it to perfection, that would just take too long. I have my program currently just taking each track and lowering the gain so that they are all at a relative rough same level. It's still not perfect though as I have to manually adjust the gains from track to track occasionally. As long as it's good enough so that the track is at the same relative level then that is fine. Do let me know your opinion of it/feel free to give me some feedback as it sounds like your quite knowledgeable about mixing/audio.

Well the thing is you're right a compressor will take away some punch if you just lump it over an entire song, but with the right settings it will be helpful.

A multiband compressor compresses the highs, mids, and lows separately and is often used for mastering.

If you can get your hands on a multiband compressor then do the same thing, but figure out where the punch is in each track (as far as high, mid, lows). Compress the parts that DO NOT contain the punch a bit. Then the punchy part just a hair with faster attack and release. Then put the gain up slightly on those parts you want to emphasize.

Try this:
1. Multiband Compress lightly and appropriately using minor gain on parts you want to emphasize
(If you don't have a multiband compressor: Use very light compression with long release. Use EQ three to emphasize the part you want a bit. Make sure it's correct for each individual song/mash!)
2. Play with a saturator to make it sound a little more lush. (Just use a bit to add warmth or grit.)
http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/production/how-to-use-saturation-effectively/ (Check out the "Saturation in Mastering" part.)
3. Turn it down to -3dB average, no clipping peaks
4. Put a limiter on the whole thing -.3 dB ceiling

Try it lemme know how it goes!
I listened and loved the mix by the way. :D

At first I was *blank stare*, but then it started to make sense if I want to really make my tracks bang. Problem is just time. I already have to do a lot to each song before it's even playable...adding that would add a LOT of time. For now, as long as the entire set is relatively the same volume, that's good enough. Though I think I will look into that process in the future, thank you.

Do you produce? That talk definitely sounds like production-talk

Well yeah from a producer's perspective, I can see that, of course. I don't hide titles, I offer them when asked, but I don't feel obligated to give my entire tracklist along with the set.

I see it as sort of similar to telling somebody your build in starcraft while you are playing against them. After they have seen it, sure I can tell them, but to tell them beforehand I feel kind of ruins the fun out of it. Not only are listeners more likely to judge a mix before listening to it if I post a tracklist below, but it also takes away from what I have done to it. Anybody can make a tracklist and call it a "mix", but I am putting in a lot more effort into my sets than just song A, B, C, etc.. In fact, there are a lot of people who call themselves DJs and literally just throw some tracks on their itunes and call it a mix. I feel by posting a tracklist below, people might assume that I am not actually mixing tracks, and I definitely don't want to give that impression off on potential listeners.

If listeners REALLY love a song, then they can ask about it and I will definitely tell them. If it's lame to tell everybody my structure of my set that I planned before they even press play, then so be it.

Also, to be fair to producers, I am essentially advertising their music at no charge after I have already paid them, so that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Just my opinion though.

I try to go monthly just because that way I can consistently make mixes as some months I buy more tunes than others. However because I took such a big break I have quite a few extra tracks than usual so I think I will make a new one before the end of the month. Probably drum 'n bass as that has been my latest genre I am loving at the moment and I would like to share what I've been into lately. I will probably just make a single official blog for the future so that I don't have to keep making new ones yet can inform TL of my new sets.

Thanks for the interest by the way! Feel free to contact me whenever about anything regarding my sets.

Despite my counter-argument before...I have decided that for future sets I will be including track lists lol. Thanks for your concern there, you are right.
