Was sitting around thinking of why I can't get into SC2 in the way I was for BW, at this point in time I play maybe one or two sessions a month but watch the GSL nightly and still follow the pro scene as well as the foreign. I feel like I finally have came to my answer and it's the lack of a personal community, during BW era clans/teams/popular channels all were in a sense their own communities which is really what kept me playing so long even years after I stopped trying to compete I hung around and filled hours just chatting and go over replays with friends, none of my old friends followed into sc2 or we lost touch over the years inbetween. However with Sc2 it seem to just be impersonal ladder grinding which really isn't my thing almost to the point where I think back fondly upon places like x17 and nohunters. Meeting new people really doesn't seem as simply as it once was.

TLDR: I'm a whiny bitch who has no friends and doesn't want to play sc2 because of it, but FUCK YOU it's my blog and I can bitch about whatever I want, k thx bai

I never played BW but i definitely agree that SC2 seems like a game thats almost meant to be played alone. Theres not much emphasis on community in the game, and i feel like without sites like this there wouldn't be a place to talk about starcraft or anything, besides blizz forums and those don't count. I guess chat channels made it a little easier to communicate with people but theres still the feeling that blizzard meant for this game to be played by yourself, and 2v2s, 3v3s, and 4v4s are just extra things they threw in to make it more appealing

I think they just didn't give enough consideration to the fact that people who are new to something don't really go out and do things on their own. SC:BW threw you into a chat channel from the moment you started up multiplayer. It nudged you toward interacting with a community, in the same way a single player mission provides objectives and achievements to get you to try playing the game differently. In game design your goal is to trick the player into having fun and they apparently didn't realize that that carries over to communities as well. Just giving people a few mediocre tools to interact with their friends isn't really good enough to GENERATE a community. You want stuff that makes community hard to avoid.

Although I came from mostly a WC3 experience, I feel mostly the exact same way about SC2 and the lack of community feeling.... even with chat channels, the aesthetic of that tiny window for chat and the whole able to do everything while still in a chat channel has a tendency to just leave people afk instead of interacting. Kinda correlates to that study of how they found that the modern generation, due to new technology like the internet and whatnot, can multitask so much better, but at the cost of focus and attention spans. In the same way, the attention span of those towards chatting and whatnot is heavily diluted by the setup of chat in sc2.

I feel like blizz could focus a lot more on making their own community if they realized that it would do a better job of bringing people into the game and making them play more instead of making the game easier and now showing losses anymore. It feels like theyre trying too hard to make the gameplay fun for everyone instead of making the game well rounded both in and out of game. It feels like there is no initiative to play with others, whereas in WoW you have raids, clans, dungeons, and other things like that, and i feel like starcraft would be a lot more fun if there was an easier way for a community to start up, like maybe allowing people to make their chat channels public so you didn't have to type in the name to enter.
