It has come to my attention that the TSL commentary may have been too edgy and bias for many of our members. In order to meet their needs, I have rerecorded the TSL commentary being careful to remain neutral.

Edit:

Thanks to SarcasticOne for mixing them together!

We accept your apology. It takes a big man to admit he is wrong, and to fix his mistakes. Perhaps due to this scandal you should even consider stepping aside and letting a more professional commentator take the reins.

I don't get it... everytime I see someone offer constructive critisism on this board towards an recognized figure, they get their heads bitten off. He didn't even say it in a bad way. He was just offering his sentiments on the commentary. He was mature about it.

I saw something similar in the Official State of the Game thread when someone claimed that the way they ridicule audience responses on the show is demeaning. iNcontrol promptly labeled him as a "shitstirrer" ... for having an opinion about a show that encourages people to speak their minds.

And now this.

I don't care if I get banned or whatever but it has to be said. If you guys are the leaders of this board, you should probably act appropriately. Grow up.

User was temp banned for this post.

Mod note: user was banned for stating he would be banned (martyring), not for his criticism.

If it was constructive criticism he would have PMd it to me directly to begin a discussion. Instead, he took the small man way out and made a thread asking "What does everyone else think?" Well, here's what I think.

I am offended by this commentary. I prefer "Structure flying" as opposed to "Structure floating". Floating implies that they are suspended motionless in the air, while flying implies motion, which is what the ability actually allows.

I don't know if I can watch any more casts of the TeamNeutralMoonLeague by Moderate Temperature after this egergious error.

Yea and he went on a huge diatribe about it when he could have gone in the feedback thread and wrote something along the lines of 'I dont think you need to hype the korean vs foriegner stuff so much'

The whole thing was unnecessary.

Maybe you misunderstood the purpose of this thread, but it's clearly an honest attempt by Chill to fix his many shortcomings as pointed out in the constructive criticism.

I can't have imagined a better way for Chill to address the constructive criticism than by actually listening to it and fixing his previously outrageously biased commentary!

Are you saying that there is no way a TLer could offer constructive criticism by making a thread (and inviting opinion/discussion)? I think the fact that you are a public figure suggests that any criticism/discussion might also be of interest to the larger community.

When the criticism is silly there is no place where it's constructive. If you want commentary with a korean bias go to a korean stream, if you want a foreigner bias go to TL, if you want an unbiased commentary then try and listen to the commentary from MARS. Because that's where you're most likely to find it.

Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

If it was constructive criticism he would have PMd it to me directly to begin a discussion. Instead, he took the small man way out and made a thread asking "What does everyone else think?" Well, here's what I think.

Are you saying that there is no way a TLer could offer constructive criticism by making a thread (and inviting opinion/discussion)? I think the fact that you are a public figure suggests that any criticism/discussion might also be of interest to the larger community.

No, I am not saying that.

Would you care to clarify?

Is criticism only constructive when offered and discussed in private?

Chill is saying is that constructive criticism is fine. We have website feedback and TSL forum etc and we have responded quite honestly and openly to that type of criticism.

What Chill is also saying is that he does not feel that thread criticizing commentary is constructive, but rather that the thread was ridiculous.

Thanks for fixing the commentary Chill, always a pleasure to listen to you cast.

+ Show Spoiler +
Now that the bias is gone, maybe it's time to address caster concentration. During the cast moderate temperature was obviously distracted for seconds by a phone message, he could have missed precious seconds of mining, drops, or entire engagements!

Pretty sure I caught that bias towards Canadians in Moderate Temperature's cast tonight. Minerals, Canada, abilities, Canada, structure complete, Canada. Don't know if I will be able to even listen to his cast's ever again... ever.

(But seriously Chill, start off your next commentary with Oh player X in the left corner is going to mine minerals, looks like there are minerals being mined, and OH! opponent! mining minerals as well!!!1!!1!!1!!)

Way to be wishy-washy Charlie Chill Brown.

Lacks more precision of how many minerals are being mined, in my opinion this cast was too neutral, I couldn't pay attention to the match because I was too focued on figuring who's side the caster was on.

haha. This was hilarious, it points out that being objective not only is boring for entertainment purposes, but that to say anything is basically other than what is happening, there is bound to be some bias.

I don't know... when you said unit killed that seemed pretty biased to me. You sounded happy about it and the neutral player may find that offensive. Also there is a clear bias in this commentary towards minerals. Not cool.

Not so funny without seeing the VOD, but still funny xD

And, from the OP of the thread linked in OP

Every single move, every single engagement, every single match and the reflections made based on the outcome was focuced on the korean players nationality.

This is coming from someone who say this in the very same post
Now I was cheering for the koreans, as I always do

So, he is allowed to cheer for people only based on their nationality, but Chill isn't allowed to cast about it, great "logic".

Its impossible to have unbiased commentary either way, if you have ever watched a football match or something along the sorts between your country and another country you know what I am talking about. Ofcourse when your country does something it will be brought to you as something amazing, it is only natural and I don't see what the problem is. Besides, if you don't like the commentary you can just mute your stream really.

That being said, I must mine more minerals.

Great response!

Oh and the few comments about you having to be more profesional for the sake of e-sports made me angry. Fuck these people!! Yes I said it. Seriously, I'm having enough of it. This is about gaming & fun here and not about "what can we flame today". Some people really need to take the stick out their asses and get out because im tired of wading through pages and pages of negativity.

TSL3 is an amazing tournament, Husky stepped up his game for a dual cast completely and you both were doing great. I can't wait for todays games!

Chill.

I said that I would appreciate it the focuse on koreans vs. foreigners were toned down abit. Making it look like I ment that the casting should be anything like this, huh?

If this is what you get in response when trying to help someone you admire, and while stating that several times, well then awesome=D

Trying to discusse this with a person like Chill is just pointless, seeing as he has so much more support than me anyways.

As I stated in my post concerning your casting. I admire your casting and thought the casting bit were amazing, but that the focuse on the "you-know-what" took away alot from the games.

You could have made this so sick by layering your voice. Record the "minerals being mined" and then add the other layers on top of it. Obviously you just wanted to get it done in response to the thread but I think that would actually turn out to be pretty cool. You could have added even more neutral commentary about the neutral players on top of it.

Towards minerals?? LMAO, you vespin fanboys are killing me with your blindness to everything of the non gaseous persuasion.
Clearly there was more minerals beeing mined than vespin gas but both got the same attention.

Haha, finally able to DL it and watch; loved it!

But Chill, I heard some emotion there. And those chuckles made me think you favored one player over the other. We don't want to make it look like we're favoring either player even when one is clearly winning, after all.

I have to say I'm inclined to put some effort into trying to isolate "phone message received" and make it a ringtone/alert... perhaps text alert, with "minerals being mined" a ringtone?

Would Chill allow this?

I feel the commentator was very lazy. He just said 'unit this, unit that'.
He should have been saying which unit from what player to avoid any confusion for the viewers.
The laughing was also very unprofessional.

I think it's unfortunate that a guy expressing his honest opinion in a thread on TL gets belittled with a response of this nature. eoLithic clearly is a Chill fan, as he stated in his thread several times. I believe his intent was clear, he didn't like the whole korean/foreigner vibe from the casts, and was trying to voice his opinion in such a way that would be acceptable to everyone.

Obviously I don't know what PM's were exchanged, but Chill's public response, this blog, seems like a childish way to go about things. This feels like a very thinly veiled attempt to make fun of eoLithic, and brush his concerns aside.

Now if this was simply a personal matter, no one would give a fuck I'm sure. But this isn't. Chill is in the spotlight, and this is how he chooses to express himself in this spotlight. I can't think of any professional sports commentators/casters that would address legitimate concerns in this way.

Now this is all opinion, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I think teamliquid and specifically TSL3 should handle legitimate concerns more professionally, and with a unified front, a PR department if you will. This could only benefit future TSL's and solidify SCII as a legitimate E-sport in the minds of regular people, who have only a passing interest in the game.

Any criticism welcome. Thanks for reading.

EDIT: And now the original thread is closed. I wonder why?

i completely agree with you, and the fact that this blog is now featured is kind of sad to me. eolithic didn't say anything too harsh in my opinion, and i think he has a valid concern - i get tired of the korea vs foreigner thing being rammed down my throat every single match too. i also think its possible that english is possibly not his primary language, but i think he still makes his point in a civil and polite way.

this blog to me just comes off as bratty and childish, and i think its too bad because this is the first negative thing i've had to say about anything having to do with tsl until now. i'm enjoying it a lot and i think it has been run exceedingly well, but i think people should have the power to criticize it without being made fun of and basically bullied.

I guess the thing that bothers me the most is that I can see myself having an opinion like eoLithic's, posting it, then getting laughed at by a representative of teamliquid and TSL3.

I'm merely trying to point out that if teamliquid wants to have a professional appearance, then maybe this sort of thing shouldn't go on.

Yes this IS funny, but maybe it shouldn't be featured on the front page...

To Turo and rycho:

Did either of you bother to read the rest of this thread? Both Chill and HotBid have posted in this thread saying that there is a place for criticism of TSL casting, and it is not in a brand new thread. There are feedback threads for that sort of thing, and this has been said multiple times already in this thread alone. PMs are also good. These are the correct ways to try to give feedback. This recasted cast is trying to make light of the fact that the guy found it necessary to create a whole new thread topic about his opinion of one caster in one part of one tournament, and turn it into a much bigger deal than it needed to be, especially when there is already another thread dedicated to that. It was ridiculous. Thus the ridiculous response.

PS. If you're concerned that any part of this is going to harm the growth and legitimization of esports, then become a caster and show us how to do it right. For now, we like Chill. But thank you for your opinions.

Thanks for reading.

i completely agree with you, and the fact that this blog is now featured is kind of sad to me. eolithic didn't say anything too harsh in my opinion, and i think he has a valid concern - i get tired of the korea vs foreigner thing being rammed down my throat every single match too. i also think its possible that english is possibly not his primary language, but i think he still makes his point in a civil and polite way.

this blog to me just comes off as bratty and childish, and i think its too bad because this is the first negative thing i've had to say about anything having to do with tsl until now. i'm enjoying it a lot and i think it has been run exceedingly well, but i think people should have the power to criticize it without being made fun of and basically bullied.

if you don't want to have it rammed down your throat, then don't watch it. easy as that. most of the community enjoys it, so it happens.

Come on, if he really didn't like one theme of the dozens of TSL, does he really need to make a thread for it? There's several better avenues (PMing me, using the feedback thread, dealing with it). Is it reasonable to make a thread every time someone doesn't like one thing about the TSL?

Ahaha, "Excuse me for going off the cuff there."

So awesome. Anyone who whines needs to stop taking themselves so seriously. There's a place in eSports for fun AND professionalism. The TSL is both.

Chill.
I have to honestly admit that I have yet to watch the video's and that I only reply from what I see happening now. That being said I personally feel a bit uneasy if we're getting such a response if there's critism on quite an important aspect of the TSL. Sure, there are other ways but we're on a forum here where (if in appropriate tones) we can/could discuss about subjects like the casting.

What bothers me is that you're the only one bringing this reply out as a caster, possibly being offensive and just plain rude if I was in his position. Do not take this personal, but if you dislike public critism about your style of casting, is casting truly what you should do? I mean, I can appreciate the hilarious video, but it is a bit edgy and I can imagine for PR it's not really a super good thing either. What I hope is that over time, you will be open to public discussion, as when you're not you kind of only hurt the community that supports you and others

He spent more time showing the terran players base early on... clearly this cast was biased by terran favoritism and I as a zerg player shouldn't have to stand for it! In fact, this cast didn't even include any zerg at all. I find the exclusion of my race from this event an insult to all zergs everywhere. Expect to hear from my lawyer!

I have to agree. Pretty unprofessional in my opinion. Some of us (obviously quite a few just want funny videos) hold those of you in the e-sports limelight to a pretty high standard. If this video would have been posted by any other random TLer I wouldn't have cared.

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive but this thread just feels mean spirited. Why is this in the Spotlight?
You are, what you do, when it counts.

Thanks for reading.

i completely agree with you, and the fact that this blog is now featured is kind of sad to me. eolithic didn't say anything too harsh in my opinion, and i think he has a valid concern - i get tired of the korea vs foreigner thing being rammed down my throat every single match too. i also think its possible that english is possibly not his primary language, but i think he still makes his point in a civil and polite way.

this blog to me just comes off as bratty and childish, and i think its too bad because this is the first negative thing i've had to say about anything having to do with tsl until now. i'm enjoying it a lot and i think it has been run exceedingly well, but i think people should have the power to criticize it without being made fun of and basically bullied.

if you don't want to have it rammed down your throat, then don't watch it. easy as that. most of the community enjoys it, so it happens.

i do watch it, i just mute the commentary =] i think those that enjoy it are rather vapid, but to each his own i suppose

Bias is inevitable in any good commentary. As long as the commentators aren't jumping for joy and launching fireworks whenever any single Korean unit dies (one zergling dies OMGOMGOMGOM WOOT YES YES YES YESSS GJ MONDIIII), it's all good imo.

Like tennis is pretty damn international, and the English/British (duno proper term for this) commentators tend to be pretty unbiased, but once another Brit appears on screen they tend to be a little biased...it ain't too bad.

Come on, if he really didn't like one theme of the dozens of TSL, does he really need to make a thread for it? There's several better avenues (PMing me, using the feedback thread, dealing with it). Is it reasonable to make a thread every time someone doesn't like one thing about the TSL?

Gonna have to agree with this too. The intial criticism was well written and well put. Was he right? Thats up to anyone to decide from his own point of view and whether they agree or disagree with what was said. But, as the target of the criticism, if you dont agree the best thing to do is probably to either to reply to him in the thread or just ignore it (ignoring is fine, imagine how much someone like Husky would have to spend readin TL if he were to answer all criticism from random users). But making this video, as fun as it was, just put a sour taste in my mouth and it really didn't seem like a professional way to handle criticism. And I very much disagree with the decision to put it in the spotlight.

Epic alter ego Moderate Temperature rofl! Hope he will make a cameo appearance in the future. I liked the video and already replied in the original thread but I'll qoute a piece of it I still find very important.

"I think I can add something to the discussion. It about ways casters present information. I think it was Tyler who said it on Sotg once and it really opened my eyes. What his point came down to is excitement/surprise is a big part of watching a cast. If there is an attack happening and you show the defender will have x and hold it off. You watch the attack unfold and pretty much know whats gonna happen. Whereas if you actively decide to withold that information so that when you watch the attack happen, you have no clue, it could go either way, omg hes losing and bam, x finishes or pops out and he manages to defend it, that was close!

Why I feel it was so interesting is because it allows you to sort of rationalise flaws in casting. There are so many people who feel the need to point out small errors and what not, while you could easily not care and even think about what positive stuff it can actually adds. You have to apply this with common sense, it's not a guideline or end all view just something to explore from time to time.

Now to come back to the point of the casting being swayed what is deemed unfairly by some, it's easy to say the, what I presume passionate and maybe slight exgaguration, adds a lot of that excitement. And that's just what it is. Making the game fun to watch."

Dear Chill, you are amazing, and those that think you are unprofessional are wrong.

Everyone making a big deal out of this needs to chill out and enjoy starcraft. If it were too professional, it would be boring. If it were too unprofessional, it would be bad.

It is neither. It's perfect and entertaining.

Minerals being mined.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD CHILL!
But seriously, it's obvious that a commentator is going to be biased to one player, we're all still just fans after all. And this adds a bit to the excitement and entertainment.

People need to lighten up. Regardless of the initial criticism, this video is just making fun of the situation, which includes both Chill and the preceeding criticism. Sure, there are ways casting can be improved in a professional tournament, subjecting to various personal opinions. But surely you can see that this is no more than a fun jab at the whole debate, rather than a serious response or debate on the issue.

Laugh and move on, it's the internet.

Some one should create a mod map with the Chill err... I mean Moderate Temperature's voice playing over everything every unit or structure action / creation, then everyone could use this instead of paying pro casters to do it. Genius!

It's spotlighted because it is hilarious.

It has nothing to do with who made it. If a community member made this, I assure you it would be spotlighted too because it is hilarious. They often spotlight funny things.

User was temp banned for this post.

Last edit: 2011-03-27 13:22:16
Mod note: user was banned for stating he would be banned (martyring), not for his criticism.

to my opinion, this user wasnt "martyring" to draw attention to his post, but expressing his fear of beeing banned as a result of posting. While i do not believe, that his concerns were true, i would say the expression of this sentiment clearly is. Ironically you supported his notion in a twisted way by banning him. So im just asking myself, would it have been wiser, to not ban him and thusly proving him wrong?

That martyring will be treated as a ban request is outlined specifically in the commandments. From what I've observed, implementation is not an ad hoc affair up to moderator discretion; every time the behavior is spotted, the ban policy is executed, regardless of the circumstances.

Hahaha!

This is priceless, not the video in itself but that you was so bothered by someone voicing a negative opinion about your cast that you had to go make a video to ridicule him ^^

I love Incontrol and Chill for this, they don't reply to people being overly serious and critical about something that isn't actually an issue or concern - they make fun of the person instead.

And then people in return get offended by Chill and Incontrol offending the guy who originally wrote the needlessly critical post. Its like an evil circle, and people just fall into it every godamn time.

Shameful of Chill to ridicule eoLithic for making a constructive polite post. I agree with eoLithic, the casting was no fun to listen because there was very little commentary on the games. I know one should hype up the players, but Chill proceeded to hype up anti-korea anger. This also fed into making the LR thread horrible, almost unreadable.

TL goes from professional (having active mods and Nazgul saying that "I'm taking care of my people.") to being a bunch of friends having ... and giggles in a heartbeat.

I liked the commentaries as they were, but i dislike this answer by Chill : being neutral is not the same as being bad. Professional casters try as hard as they can to be as neutral as possible to avoid offending anyone, but it doesn't prevent them from commentating and being excited about nice actions.
And why the answer anyway ? He was biaised, he should just embrace it or ignore the criticism (i think the vast majority of viewers where rooting for non koreans, for their own reasons).

I'm sorry to say this, but you complainers are all just a bunch of idiots.

What a caster says about a player has no impact on said player at all; if a caster is biased towards one player that doesn't imply the other will suddenly start sucking.

Everyone has their own opinion. It almost seems as though if you knew of all the negative opinions against your favorite team or player, you'd die out of a stroke. It's the fact you don't that keeps you happy in your proud tiny bubble.

Man up and enjoy the castings, regardless of their contents, instead of complaining about them like a little 13 year old girl who just caught a gossip about her first menstruation.

Why would they be neutral?

This game is looking to be a bit diferent then the korean dominance of BW, they will still be better because of their game houses, teams, money, GSL and practice regime.

This is KOREA vs the world and they can hold their own against the rest of us.. isn't this saying enought about the koreans skill and dominance of this game??

Even in WC3 where you had few americans and some europeans competing you can have 1 euro for each 3 korean super stars..

We have grubby they have moon, lyn, sweet, zacard, FoV and so many others...

come on.. a 55million country can hold their own against the world best team.. don't you guys think this is giving them enought credit??

I like koreans, i admire their passion and feel for the game but i prefer to see a european kick their asses simply because i think they are better then all of us..

It's like NBA vs the world.. i love NBA i follow it but if someone beats the americans it's a hell of a good game and i bet the foreign commentators will be all over that aspect.. or do you believe that if Brazil lost to Argelia or even USA all of the world wouldn't talk about that?

When someone that's favored to win loses it's not always because the best man/team played bad but because the other man/team played better.. and that's what i've been seing in the TSL..

NO KOREA BASHING BUT FOREIGN PRAISING! and that's fair imo!

Chill did a wonderfull job and i loved those casts (and so did the other casters)

Seems like a strange thing to complain about.

Like the video pointed out a neutral caster really wouldn't care much about the game. When the home team (= pretty much non-korea) is winning from an underdog position I would expect emotion from that. Much like a swedish football commentator would be biased towards sweden and so on.

Anyway I didn't even think about bias when I watched it. Like anything it can become too much but I don't remember it anyway.

It seemed in the last half of the video only few minerals were mined or the caster must have missed it!! What a horrible caster!!! not telling us everything we need to know!!!! The players could have taken all workers from the minerals and we wouldn't know because moderate temperature didn't tell us that they were still mining!!!!!

Then how come professional sports casters aren't biased towards one team if it isn't a world cup or the olympics? I've never seen a sports caster favor barcelona over real madrid, that's how many feel about it. I love White-Ra or HuK but those guys and i have nothing in common beside not being korean.

I guess some people have a problem with the whole "us vs them" thing, i really don't feel like a better person just cause people from my part of the world win games against people who live in a different part of the world.

The moral of the story is that if you try to be all things to all people, you just end up with a watered down product. To those getting all in a huff about this, stop taking yourselves so seriously. This is a game, not a board room. It's fine to have some expectations of a caster, but to expect them to be as finely honed and politically correct as a presidential speech is silly. There's a reason people don't like politicians.

Martyring is stupid which is why TL has a zero tolerance policy on it. Writing "I'll probably be banned for this" is a way for someone to write something offensive with the idea that moderators can't ban him or else they'd prove him right. It also implied pretty strongly that moderators can't understand which posts deserve action and which don't.

In order to sidestep this situation completely, we ban/warn everyone who martyrs.

I hyped up the anti-Korean storyline because it's exciting. People had been saying that Koreans would dominate the TSL, and that they shouldn't be invited to the NASL because they would win it too easily. It's probably the most prominent storyline of all the TSL.

If you don't agree, then post that in the TSL Feedback thread. Opening a new thread for something like that is ridiculous. And read his tone. Some of the statements I can't even understand what he's getting at. Look:

The skill gap seemed to dissapear after an hour of Chill talking exclusively about how the foreigners are finally almost, if not as good as the koreans.
This isn't true.

Now, the foreigners played great do not get me wrong and so did the koreans, but there were no mercy for the koreans what so ever and the commentators, especially Chill made huge assumptions after every single engagement and/or match concerning the skill gap betweem the scenes being crushed.
This also isn't true.

And I could go on and on pasting quotes. The exaggeration to prove his opinion is so ridiculous that it can only be responded to with equally ridiculous exaggeration.

If his criticism was accurate and fair, then I would have loved to receive it. I've read through the TSL Caster Feedback thread at least a dozen times. But it's not accurate at all. It's exaggerated to prove his post, which triggered my exaggerated response.

I'm neither a professional caster nor a professional poster. Neither are my career. That being said, being TL staff and a caster of TSL certainly holds me to a higher standard, but certainly not the same standard as a professional broadcaster. Professionalism is dictated by viewers, producers, and sponsors. If I can be myself without alienating a significant portion of those three groups, then I will. I don't think this crossed that line.

The silent majority is the happy majority. I'd like to speak in behalf of the silent majority, we love the games. we love the casts.
We are also aware that the loud minority is usually full of whiners and low IQ netizens.

BTW, I'd love this as a MP3, so I can have an awesome "Minerals being mined" casting behind me while I'm playing. Screw listening to music while playing, all you need is Chill's awesome voice repeating "Minerals being mined" over and over.

Being an official member of the Silent Majority, I would like to simply quote this post for truth.

I couldn't get away from the TV at all this weekend, because of the high level of awesomeness emanating from TSL's stream. You don't have to change anything. The games were amazing, the casting was awesome, the stream quality was impressive(Especially considering 52k viewers on sunday, and not lagging at all?!?!?!), and even the breaks between the games were well done...

I almost feel like the caster backlash is a product of the Korea-o-philes getting irked their home team didn't do so well... the casting didn't seem any different than anything else I've ever heard. It was solid in every way. The only noticeable differences - Koreans lost and the casters reacted with the appropriate amount of surprise and interest.

The casts were great, stop whining. Chill's mockery of the whining was even greater, enjoy being made fun of like the little angry nerds you are.

I don't get the complaints about the "foreigner bias" or why he is focusing on the Korea vs World stuff...

E-Sports casting is suppose to make games more interesting/provocative, it's a lot story telling. With a lot of people on this board being big fans of Koreans and holding the opinions that Koreans are better than everyone at SC2, then OF COURSE it would be a BIG STORY if in a major tournament all the favorite Koreans were getting eliminated in the first round.

It would be different if only one, maybe two big named Koreans were being eliminated, but when you have FD, MVP, Nestea, Genius out and the Korean-living/training contingent of IdrA, Jinro, Haypro and HuK joining them, it sort of makes it a big deal, and he should play up the story as it is probably the most significant of the tournament thus far.

People need to stop with the "unprofessional-ism" crap I keep running into all over the place here. Where do the standards come from? Is Fox news "professional"? Cause even all day saturday, chill had way less bias than FOX does over the course of an hour.

People need to take shit less serious......but chill...errr "moderate temperature", you're video was pretty sick. Would watch again.

And now this.

I don't care if I get banned or whatever but it has to be said. If you guys are the leaders of this board, you should probably act appropriately. Grow up.

Well, logically you said "constructive criticism => PM"
which is equivalent to "no constructive criticism <= no PM".

Thank you for answering, i didn't mean that you're bad, not at all, just that the impersonation of the overly neutral caster wasn't accurate from my point of view.
As i said, i enjoyed the game, I enjoyed seeing Adel win (being a frenchman and all), and today i enjoyed seeing the matchs of the gom allstars vs korea.
i just don't think this needed an answer, as funny it was

lol I don't get why anyone would actually spend time maing that tread.Let's say that was soccer and you watch your contry on national TV would you like it if comentators started celebraiting over the other nations goal.Ofcourse not,but seeing thats ESPORTS is diffrent lets say coming from BW wich i personally didnt follow Chill dealed with that skill gap and probably cheered on every foreigner that won a game versus koreans. So this translates to now where the upsets are really cool and amazing and its normal to get emotional about it.

Silent Majority reporting in.

I've been just about every second of the TSL, with the only exceptions coming when my favourite players lose. The casting has been fun, exciting, and insightful.

The only complaint I have about the casting is that I'm still eagerly awaiting the elusive Artosis. Can't wait for him to make an appearance!

First time in a long while that I actually went through an entire TL thread...but this is just legendary. Can't wait for the poll to choose the caster pair for the finals: my vote definitely goes to Chill/ModerateTemperature, cause if there is anyone that can actually get over all of Chill's bias it is definitely ModTemp. I can tell that it will be a fierce fight between the two but in the end we can have a plain ol'final with plain ol'Tyler and plain ol'Mondi on the neutral map pool with "minerals being mined", I'm sure of it.

And for all the people that keep saying that Chill is "unprofessional": come on guys, give the man a break, it's not like he does grudge matches against CombatEx with Day9 talking about e-penis length in the commentary....anymore.

I don't feel the same responsibility as a professional sports caster because I am not a professional Starcraft caster. Sorry if that offends you.

I also don't feel happy when Canadians win at Starcraft, but I do feel happy when Koreans lose. To understand this, you have to have been part of the Brood War comunity.

I was never into BW so i can just trust your word for that. :D

What i kinda feel is that Starcraft needs some more professionalism. And i don't mean professionalism like shirt+tie monotone voice. I got kinda annoyed by Artosis too in GSL S1/S2 when his biased shone through alot when casting zergs. It has gotten better with time and I know sports casters that get alot of flak for biased casts and it's probably universal over all kinds of sport (unless broadcasted within a nation for the olympics/world championships etc).

That's just my opinion. I do like the TSL and you, Chill, but it's just suggestions.

i don't think that neutral = vague

it would be funny if it were a bit more relevant. say, if someone told you that you were going off on tangents about irrelevant things in the middle of casts, but this doesn't seem like a proper rebuttal to the criticism you received =/

satire depends a lot on relevancy, homie!

People need to take themselves so f-ing serious. If people cant take a joke, gtfo the internet. Chill didnt feel the concern was valid, the poster blew it out of proportion according to him, he made a joke about it. Why is it so hard to laugh at yourselves? There is nothing worse than people righteously telling people what to take seriously and what they are allowed to make jokes about. And yes, this is somewhat hypocritical of me.

The funny part is: This might be exaggerated but true.
Seriously, people want games to be casted. Why? Because they make the games more exciting. Being moderate is the death of being exciting. If you want moderate casting, you should just turn the sound off. It doesn't get any more moderate.

It is exaggerated but it isn't true.

I read that guys post about Chill and it was wasn't about being moderate and boring. Sure the post over dramatized the whole thing but the basic point was that Chill focused way to much on one side. I repeat what i said in a previous post, this is not a world cup where the caster is broadcasting nationally to a more or less homogenus group. I'm guessing people root for both koreans and foreigners, and too much focus on one side isn't optimal.

My two cent.

If think the casters should be allowed to use personal judgement on this, because they are nice enough doing something for the community. Maybe it wasnt optimal, but so what? Not everything is perfect.

Concerns may be valid, though being a drama queen about it makes you a target. Simple.

Wow...what an amazing cast. Absolutely superb Moderate Temperature. I was just stunned when those minerals were mined. I've never seen a game like this, I can't wait for more! Please sir, cast many more games with such amazing passion and vibrancy.

However, it does seem unprofessional to exclude the quality with which the foreigner played against the highly skilled Korean. /sarcasm end

On a more serious note though, I would like to throw out a thank you to everyone involved in the TSL tournament so far. I've had a ton of fun watching the games and, personally, have had no problems with any of the casting. You guys have done great, keep up the good work. You probably deserve a lot more recognition that you ever get; seems like critique of the event is more visible than any complements.

Imagine how Husky feels LOL
You are are good caster and get the job done. Could things be improved, YES, but I dont think that in your negative state of mind, it would change anything you do.

There are better ways to address criticism though.
I think you took the criticism personally, thus why you though the rebuke was necessary.

Chill out and get this off the front page because this looks bad on you and is only funny if you overlook the fact someone is being essentially bullied for voicing their legitimate right to criticise another on a forum (even though it may be bollocks, they still can)

Ah ha, but moderate temperature wasn't doing that. When he was commentating "Minerals being mined" he was referring to the neutral Protoss. This way one player gets to have his working units being shown via video, and the other player gets to have his working units being described via sound, a fair way of broadcasting.

I felt like you were a bit impartial talking only about minerals and neglecting gas, I feel like the term "resources being harvested" would better impart the neutrality of the cast to the viewer.

It is obvious that neutral temperature is biase towards the neutral Terran. He spent like 80% of screentime observing the lower base! So much for neutral commentary. Obviously this will ruin the future of ESPORT forever.

My Short Chill Neutral Commentary Review

In this video Moderate Temperature (MT) is casting a game between a Protoss player and a Terran player. MT is doing a good job of staying on top of the action making sure the viewer doesn't miss a beat. However MT begins to laugh two or three times during the cast which in my opinion lightens the mood of the cast - clearly a rookie mistake here from MT.

For the most part though I have to say no feelings, either good or bad, were produced while watching this cast. Based on that statement alone I have to recommend this to anyone wanting to get into Starcraft 2.

A warning flag must be raised since MT stops the commentary after roughly 5:30 and if he wants to continue as a starcraft caster he must somehow find the stamina to stay for an entire game.

The first day I joined TL, I was impressed by its own admission that "we are a community that rule based on seniority. Fair? Perhaps not. But that's how we do things."

Thus, the way Chill is being strongly defended is justified within the boundary of TL. However, please don't make it look like we have a moral superiority over the critics of Chill. We don't--as whoever drafted the TL Forum Guidlines was manly enough to admit.
Best or nothing.

Well done Chill. Can't wait for the next matches!!!!!

PS. I think it's ironic there was just a Korea vs TheWORLD matchup in Korea! If the koreans don't want to have the focus on them for being korean then oGsMC wouldn't be bringing a giant sign out and thumbs downing the foreigners live! Anyways, commentary is better then nothing. Thanks TL casting team!

So is this because of people complaining about the TSL casting being biased?

I would agree, it was biased. Though there are other ways of being neutral other that sounding exactly like microsoft Sam.

Moderate Temperature should train more and speak faster. I still don't know how he would handle a long game on a big map with multiple expands. Also, being neutral in commentating also mean you spend the same amount of time on each player : Moderate Temperature should click faster on the map. Finally, it should also being said that one cannot afford to miss any single action on the map because it is actually being way too biased on what is and what is not important.

It actually means that being a neutral commentator requires : 1) over 9000 apm 2) speaking faster than Husky on crack 3) being able to speak for at least 45 in-game minutes without taking breath because it's unprofessional.

Any other casting will be awarded with the "biased" qualification and should not being watched by people under 18 or offendable people. Also anyone watching a biased cast should not have the right to express an opinion because it is way too biased, be it due to the cast or by reaction to the cast.

I strongly advice the moderators of this forum to read this post in ModerateTemperature's voice and to take measure accordingly. First step would be to create a separate forum for adults and non-offendable people in which the perverse part of our community will be able to deprave themsleves by talking and reacting on biased casts.

Haha I think this was perfect, especially the apology from Chill when he laughed.

Chill is the best commentator in the bunch with day9 as his equal. I can't agree with any of the criticisms and I think everyone who feels like I do should make a topic over how awesome TSL is the next time.

There was a 11.27% increased level of vocal joy when documenting the mineral mining of the neutral protoss player.

How can we possibly enjoy the game when that kind of bias is present?

The obvious bias doesn't bother me that much, and chill is an amazing caster, I just think neutrality lends legitimacy to the sport, because it's like the caster is doing a professional job, not just having fun. That doesn't mean no enthusiasm however. The only thing I would like to see is for a caster not to say they are rooting for someone. Idk why, but even if it's really obvious, I just prefer they don't say it out loud. That being said, all the casters are total bosses and should do whatever the he'll they want.

While watching International football or rugby or any game I've tended to find that the commentators are always - for obvious reasons - more on the side of their own countrymen. I think its fine to show obvious bias in who you want to win as long as what you're saying in commentary is still objective, fair and entertaining, which I think all the commentators for this have been.

I cannot say for certain as I cannot speak Korean but I'm sure Korean casters of these games would be rooting for their own countrymen. It's just the way things like this work in all sports/esports.

Openly saying you're rooting for a player while casting is fine, and is very different than coloring an assessment of a game by saying a player is winning or doing better than they actually are just because they are your favorite player.

Not exactly sure which of the two is being accused of happening in TSL because i don't watch SC2, but if its the second one thats a legitimate problem that shouldn't be happening. If its the first that is a stupid thing to criticize. Whether or not the premise of this video is legit (depends which 2 of the kinds of criticism its responding to) the fact that you just literally stated everything on the screen over and over the entire time made it less funny and pretty retarded :/
Could have been really funny if it was more tastefully done

Is the suggestion that this could have been handled through PM or the Feedback thread simply because the TSL is organized by TL.net? Haven't there been plenty of threads created for discussing a single aspect of a tournament (e.g. Kelly's accent in GSL) that TL.net doesn't run? If TL.net didn't run TSL and if Chill was not TL.net staff, would it still be inappropriate to post about it on TL.net?

omg the "minerals being mined" was so hypnotizing, I couldn't stop listening t_t

But yes this is probably the future of starcraft commentary, no bias, just honest and neutral straight up commentary where the watcher/listener isn't being misled or pushed towards a certain view on the game by the caster.

As always chill is on the cutting edge of shoutcasting again, and this will definatly start a revolution!

MT, we hope you are addressing this issue because you are one of the only neutral commentators out there!

I think this cast was a bit bias toward the Terran, you did not focus evenly on both human's. I believe you need to be a little more even, also toward the end of the cast you didn't notice the neutral Protoss' was upgrading.

Jokes aside, thank you! 5ish minutes was worth watching.

That laugh @ 3:15 was sooooo BM.

And the tone of your voice @~ 2:30 "units attacking". It's like you enjoy the Terran base being invaded. How is that neutral at all?

So much blatant disrepect for the Terran player totally kills the interest in the game.

We want Nicolas Cage's stare level of emotionlessness and more neutrality than Switzerland. Anything else will be raged at.

If I have the sources right the guy didn't like a very biased casting against MVP. I looked through the forum couldn't find.
