I started browsing this site in 2007. Back then there would be like max 1000 people 'logged in' and maybe twice that 'active.' I started watching loads of starcraft for the next 2 years, wrote a bunch, and got to know who the big names were around these parts.

I joined Writers in 2009, and wrote for 2 MSL seasons to go with my 3 TLFEs. I look around the forums now, and I don't know anybody who is posting in the odd thread. I browse through writers to see if there's anything I can help out with, and all I see are new pens who I've not worked with before. Even Plexa's gone. Never thought I would outlast him.

When I was first here, we had baby blue horsies at the top, there wasn't a main page but just more like a blog layout, there were no user streams or TSLs. We had liquibition and TL.net Attack and we liked it dammit. Day[9] was only known to a few people, and yeah, sAviOr was still hot shit. I even survived the tdot years. The site has come a long way, and the community too. It's still the best place out there for anything starcraft, and I have nothing but praise for all the staff and all of that. Its more like I just don't quite feel like I fit in here anymore.

Oh well. There's always RL.

I've read a couple of your FE's, they were exceedingly good. ^o^

Maybe you should start doing regular writing again, get the juices flowing. C:

I've always considered myself "new to the scene" because I didn't start following Brood War until 2008, it still weirds me out when I find out there I know more about BW history than some of the newer staff members.

You know it was only a year, maybe 14 months ago that it was a huge deal when 5k were active on TL (during OSL finals). We had more than that logged in yesterday. Crazy.

If you ever want to write drop me a line, you will always have a place!

Thanks .

It's not that I wouldn't, it's the time committment to watching the games, knowing the scene and all of that. I have stopped following regularly, and to hop back on the track I think would take an enormous amount of effort before I could write knowledgably on it all. If I did contribute anything, and I've thought about it, it would probably another FE dealing more generally with things I know about. On the other hand, getting back in the groove is appealing.

I'm in the same boat. Even back in '09 it felt like everybody else knew more than I did, then the floodgates opened.

I saw the logged in and active numbers for the TSL broadcast and my eyes bugged out of my head. I couldn'tve dreamed of those numbers back in '08 when I joined.

Thanks. I may come back to give a crack at the first SC2 TLFE, but it would be more general because I find it insane to try and follow the scene because it's so spread out. Then again, I was always criticized for writing poetry instead of facts...

Btw never got a chance to congratulate you on your red. So congrats . The writing staff is better for it.

As a luke warm member for 5+ years as well, this site has just gotten crazy crazy HUGE. It's really quite mindboggling. What appeals most to me about TL.net is how many different countries are represented and how refreshing it is to hear views about any particular subject from all corners of the globe.

At the same time, it's rather disheartening to see a new topic get swallowed up by a swarm of new stuff within an hour only to forever disappear to the archives. I don't know if its possible to "post too much", but seems that some users on this forum are crazed fanatics with hundreds of posts a month that just add to the staggering numbers of posts and topics.

Planar Erratus: (www.broodwarai.com/mods/peai) Where the worlds of Baldur’s Gate, Arcanum, Diablo, Icewind Dale, Torment, and Warcraft collide with Starcraft. Don't question, just play! ... Dedicated to all my TL.net friends and old schoolers!

I was modding Brood War since 1999. Modding died out in 2002ish but I continued my work all the way until 2009 where I released my final BW project. Since then I have moved away from Blizzard games and every time I look back to my old work I think "wow, I've gotten old". I'm only 23, but I was doing voice acting and all that back when I was like 12-13. Puts things in perspective, really.

All of the websites that were associated with Starcraft modding even 4 years ago are all long dead now. I wish TL had been a part of that world, because TL is the only SC site out of all the ones I've been a part of that has any grasp over how to manage a forum and keep the site itself polished and updated.

man the days of old TL are over.

i remember back when the strategy forum was actually really good. Chibi was always getting banned for some borderline pedophile crap. Hotbid would be cooking up another big troll thread. Frozenarbiter somehow had time to post in almost every thread and have something good to say. Motlkeywarding would come into some political thread 15 pages in and rape the shit out of it. Religion threads were 30 pages long. Baal thought he was the most badass motherfucker ever. Normal money vs fastest money discussion. then all the regulars GrandInquisitor, Manifesto, Nazgul, BigBalls, thedeadhaji, GTR, Fakesteve, Plexa, Incontrol, Leg, Midian, Rekrul etc lol

the days when there were no streams and i would F5 in the live report thread. the days of reach nalra boxer kingdom gorush nada iloveoov july savior then all the fuckin awesome highlight videos that came out every year. fuck

so many new guys around TL now and the old ones left =(

haha, TL is changing that's for sure...
it's definitely moving in a better direction with all the additions of tlpd/tlfe's, modernizing the front page/layout, official writer/graphics/liquipedia teams etc. The main thing i miss from the old TL is just being able to recognize people in threads and being actually able to keep up with the whole forum ^_^ now, i retreated to a few key areas (hon/dota, health&fitness, blogs) and that is my TL now i almost completely ignore sc2 forums and such

back in myyyyyy day we had no silly race icons beside names!!!!1 now get off my lawn you rascals

edit: who's up for a blast from the past?

I remember when Rekrul was an admin. That was funny.

I do like the big new scene though. Watching TSL last couple of days, I can't believe I watched it live with almost 40,000 people. That's like a full stadium on European soccer nights. Makes me go WOW

its funny that I was one of those people who got into bw proscene because of klazart, which is sorta like being one of those people who got into sc2 because of hd and husky.

I remember bisu v savior msl and then hating flash when he cheesed bisu twice in a row out of osl

i also pretty much never posted first 3 years because I had nothing important or valuable to contribute and I was scared to ruin the prestine gosu environment of tl.net, but then sc2 came and the trash that I have to say is no worse than the trash that 99% of people have to say

YOU ARE!
at least compared to 2005 when i first started o notice your posts

@ topic:
TL.net was the 3rd major community page i joined (after a german quake 3 site and a german warcraft 3 site). It feels ages since i played my first cs clanwar in early 2000 and i still remember playing war3 beta and massing skeletons.
But i know what you mean. Since i started focusing on my RL, my posts/week dropped significantly. Not that this is a bad thing ...

I fucking HATED that thing when I would try to do live commentaries and it would just randomly crash... blehhhhhhhh.

I lurked the site till around '06 when I started getting back into BW. I was a huge BW fan in '98 till '02 when WC3 came out and I played that a ton then realized over time the game had no where near the skill that BW had and went back. Went to Blizzcon that year and finally saw my Protoss hero Nal_rA play on the main stage with Nick and Marcus casting. They inspired me to start casting and I did my best!

Oh the good ol' fights of non-TL casters vs TL casters. Kinda wish Klaz was still around but he moved on to other things, as did many casters. I'm glad Marcus is still going strong though, if anybody is to be applauded for his work in ALL aspects of e-sports, it's him. I'm also glad he's starting to really make an even bigger name for himself. He deserves the spotlight more then anybody. (Including Nick, Dan and Sean, sorry, I'm biased I guess =( )
So wait? I'm bad? =(

So many fountain pens! I don't necessarily feel like an old timers, but I didn't create an account 'till a year or more after frequenting TL so I suppose I could feel older. Did beat the SC2 wave and remember pringle's maps.

Hahahahahahah!! Oh man. I hated Daum so much.
seriously next disrespectful comment in this blog is ip ban. Be happy or get the hell out. // SC2 is like playing with neutral-colored Play-Doh while BW is like colorful Legos.

pfff, oh yeah
i think i joined with my previous account somewhen around 03-04 ...
there was no sc2, no streams, no TLPD, no TLFE, no small VODs thread, no broadcasts of major leagues ...
but there were sweet livereports (multiple reporting at a time, PoP was my favourite reporter and much later Day[9] with all CAPS MADNESSS, OMG, YEEEES, OMG), sweet aftermatch game reports with pictures and stuff, fucking Boxer, Nada, Pusan, Nal_rA and Julyzerg (like, who the hell is Savior?!) and many of you guys, who just made it so good to hang out around the site ...

Crazy times. I have the same feeling, that i belong only to a very limited number or threads and forums here...

PS. if any of the admins read this, i would appreciate a lot, if they trace my previous account, which was either "Rand0mHer0" or "Small" and joined around 03-04 and was banned around November 04 (during WCG finals i guess) and tell exact time when i joined TLnet

Did anyone end up using chinese streams like yaoyaun (spelling) or something of the sort? I remember one stream have some crazy chinese commentator casting over the normal korean commentators, and he made just about any caster I've heard seem bearable to listen to.

Anyways, everyone in life eventually moves forward, and even if you do as well, there's always a part of you that reminisces in what has been. Sometimes you just have to accept that things will never be the way they were and accept the good with the bad.

I only got into BW because of my bro showing me Cholera's Reach comMANtaries XD. From then on, I started to learn about other English commentators (mostly the sc2gg guys), then TL, then all of Korea + the players, etc.; I missed out on a lot of years of BW, and it's kinda depressing, but I'm definitely glad I'm here where I am now.
It's crazy that I was actually able to witness the change in TL though, I still can't believe SC2 has taken off so much, I definitely wouldn't have expected this when I first came here!

I hooked up my laptop to a TV and enlarged daum player and thought it was pretty hot shit. These days, some people refuse to watch in anything under 720p.

And when StarCraft 2 came out and I was like "omg omg omg there are like FIVE streams with SC2 gaming action all at once"

Oh technology. Joined in 2009 here, lurked since 07.

When I joined back in '04 there were still people like Casper..., Veg, Leg and a few others as regular posters who seem to have vanished nowadays (at least Leg you see occasionally). Still, TL really geared up in terms of talented and ambitious staff members and therefore the site has become better and better over the years, even if the small "family community" also had its merits (when you still knew the 30 or so people who would take part in a discussion).

The first streams I remember were accessible only by some IP that you have to enter in windows media player and then pray to be lag free. Still have it in my phone - 212.202.0.47. Maybe from 2003-2004. In the beggining there were no streams, only live reports

It's kind of funny seeing "remember the good old days" posts from people who registered on tl after sc2 was announced :p

Many of us remember that day, and where we were!

remember when replays with audio (RWA) were the only easy way to watch starcraft and also listen to someone commentate at the same time?

that was back before youtube though :X

Man, RWA was soooo good. So much better than trying to sync the audio file before. 3,2,1 and go.

Actually, even with youtube around, RWA would be still awesome.

Nothing compares to the WGT days. The days when bnet ladder was actually functional were pretty good for me too. This was when DT rushing was undiscovered and you could win 90% of your games from a simple build. I'll never forget them. Much love to WGT early season memories.

When I first started watching I think it was through some site ran by... ilovecats? SC2 something or other. Back then it was fine because SC2 hadn't been announced. The site went defunct a few years back. In the time after, I never had a problem with Daum, but I gotta thank all those noble souls who posted stream links or provided restreaming services (Corinthos comes to mind) in the LR threads.

You lucky bastard. I spent sooooooooooooooooooo much time fiddling with Daum and it never worked ever even once for a little bit at all. T.T

I get the sentiment, but not exactly in the same way that I want out of here.
For me, I appreciate this place with what it offers these days, but at the same time I'm happy to have witnessed the TL of old days, pre-sc2, when everything was less ... huge. It had a certain charm. Like remembering an old friend when you were kids and you were both innocent and untroubled.

TL now is like that same friend with some Ph.D. from a bigshot university, working magic in the corporate world. You're happy about it, but you're also nostalgic about the old days when things were more...quiet and relaxed.

TL is still my first and last thing to check. But man the threads run fast. SC2 forums always have one full site of new topics with hundrets of replies. Sometimes I see a topic and want to post something but there's already a gazillion replies and I just leave it be.

I remember yelling at sAviOr for always scouting right and praying for the stream to not lagg too much when the game starts. Streams were always smooth before the games :D

Reading battle reports and later download the vods over the tl tracker... I remember having the finals stream up on saturday and friends who didn't play BW come by to watch. Superfights man...where everyone praised Reach's hair.

It's ridiculous how there are like 50 user-streams sometimes...always a tournament. Everything is one click away.

I lol'd when I saw the first three posters. That type of coincidence just doesn't happen.

But man, I gotta admit, I sometimes feel like an old timer too, despite only coming from September of 08. I know there's way more oldies than me, but damn...there were so many things that now seem like forgotten memories....

Hell, the fail MBC game between Flash and Jaedong seemed so long ago too....even though it was barely....last year maybe? Or two years ago....I don't remember now.

I remember back when.. Crap I'm a newcomer. Can I feel old anyway, I mean 30 is past prime for a gamer right? I do think I know what you guys are talking about though. The defunct SCA website was very hush hush at first and a lot of people knew each other very well. Then it was announced big and SCA got enveloped in people. It was like a disease running rampant during the middle ages. The bright side is a lot of it dies down as time goes on; some people lose interest and some people just learn when to stop doing [memes] and write good posts.

My first TL memory was watching the tail end of the first PokerStrategy TSL with some friends, then proceeding to join the mafia forum and never look back.

It's weird that I've barely been here a year, but that's still more than the majority of active posters nowadays.

I found TL somewhere during the Golden Age of Protoss (Oct or Nov 08) and registered a short time later. So not exactly old school, although I can remember the Daum player, as well as when Livestreams first started popping up (starcraftwonkman!).

I have the SC2 forums minimized so it's pretty weird for me to be reading blogs or whatever and have random 2k-3k posters I've never seen before show up :O

Just curious if anyone happens to know who is the Oldest member (age) of TL? I know Entropy has me beat by about a year. He's 46 I believe and I'm 45 born in Jan, 1966. Kinda curious just for the sake of triviality. We were both "washed" up when the game started in 1997 already in our 30's haha.

You know what, this thread has finally given me the answer as to WTF should I do for my 3k post????

I know it's been done many times before, and I know it might not even be interesting, but I plan to look back at my old posts in old threads and do a feel good/LOL thing for the community. There are a lot of funny threads i can think of haha...

So much change since the 4 years I started lurking, I want to do this for myself too

I actually discovered Teamliquid a week before the announcement, but I'll admit the announcement was what kept me here.

Then, I grew addicted to watching the BW games. I remember my first VODs I watched were all of the Bisu vs. Savior final games, and the first league I followed was the Daum OSL.

I just logged onto west and joined op tl-west and the bot was still there. Almost made me tear up :p.

I'm not too old but I'm old enough to know how much TL has changed since I joined. I found TL because I finally got a copy of the game (I had always played it when I was smaller at my cousin's house and he wouldn't let me play that often) and wanted to be good at it. SC2 was announced about half a year after I started lurking TL but I really didn't care because my computer wouldn't be able to play it anyways. Got really immersed in TL and used to be able to follow every thread and know most posters. Now I'm short on time so I'm longer a match for the beast that is current day TL.

Daum player is new school

Old school was free mms streams from mbc and ogn, but then they shut them down and the only way to get a stream was through ogn and you had to pay for it and needed a KSSN. I think TL had one that they coveted. Then there was vods from that mr019...whatever numbers guy, then youtube uploading / afreeca / daum etc

I still don't feel like an old timer here. It's kind of like real life in that I don't really remember how old I am nor feel like my age describes me particularly well.

If I have to say "I remember" I have to say it about video quality. I remember when you couldn't read any letters or numbers on the videos, and how amazing it was for like the week or two that someone was uploading VODs to stage6 in high quality. Hahaha, stage6...

The TL torrent tracker was my best friend for so long, I tried to get daum player working, but it sucked so much.

I just resorted to torrenting all the videos of proleague every week and watching them in large chunks

I found TL after Longinus was introduced as a new map and was looking for a place to download it. Then I lurked for a while before making an account. I never really followed what happened around TL that much and have always flown under the radar. I've always tried to give back however, trying to make new maps, giving out some tips (mostly bad looking back), and doing live reports every so often.

I don't know if I classify as an old timer (semi-old perhaps?) but sometimes when I think back and remember the times when Savior, Nada, Anytime and all those other players coming out on lineups regularly I can't help but get a little nostalgic~

Hmm... I've been around for a while as well... I literally grew up with TL and WGT. WGT is what really kept me around SC. TL was my second home. I think I started to view TL when I was like 14? I'm 22 now turning 23 this year. I won't lie, my maturity grew cause of TL. I look back at some of my old post and I think to myself, "I was a fucking idiot."

I have been lurking TL and posting shittily (banned twice) since I was 14 (19 now).

Unfortunately I really have no talent to contribute to this website, so I just remain relatively unknown, except in the high thread. Always looked for a way to help out, but never had the confidence to submit anything.

I think my oldest TL memories are reading game reports every day before vods were widespread, cruising through afreeca trying to find BW, and getting mega gosu from BigBalls' Protoss guides.

And by the way the "good times" of high quality posting never existed

omg super nostalgia threadd FFFFFFFFFFUuuuuuuuuu

I got nostalgic enough myself that I talked myself into writing another FE. It's in the researching phase, being the phase where I annoy top level players until they give me informationz so I can write teh article.

Heh, great stuff :-)
Annoy 'em to bits.
I read all your stuff.

Looking at this thread makes me wish I discovered TL while I first begin actively joining Blood War community (which is far before considering I lived in Korea during youth), but I reconsider and realize I probably would have failed due to my immaturity & lack of English comprehension at the time.

I read actively in 2007 / 2008, didn't really post until 2009.

I kinda miss pre-SC2 TL. Especially blogs, blogs were fun to read but now there's a lot of SC2 criticism, pledges to get really good at SC2, journals of SC2, meh. I don't really like posting so much as I like reading.

But yea I loved reading all the old highlights of players, reading about Midas and Savior, Jaedong and Bisu, histories of teams and rivalries, it was all good. I never really read who the author was for each article but I'm sure I read several articles by the OP.

I remember lots of stuff from the old TL. I remember playing TMA a lot during weekends, fun times.

I remember the first PM i got from TL.net bot with the password to download vods (in like 240p quality) directly from toptalents servers (i think).

Also the first time I watched a FPVod, I wanted to be as fast as those progamers. BWChart came out and I had 50apm ;_; but i practiced till i got to around 200~ so proud :D

Hard to keep up with everything on the forums nowadays, I used to read everything everything here I think. Turning out to be daunting task to find everything for Pony Tales :p

This thread is so fun to read, really makes me wish I had joined TL earlier.

Btw, Arrian, if you did ever write a SC2 FE, that would make my week. Just realized we haven't really had a Starcraft 2 one after all(besides the release one.)

One of my favorite things to do while surfing TL is coming across TL, and just noticing the change in atmosphere from now and then.

Like this thread, just reading the first couple replies made me laugh, and seeing such a tight knit community really had such a great feel to it.

Yeah, I just wish I had joined this community earlier when I got into Starcraft several years ago...

...then, I'd be an old-timer just like you.
