Nobody here knows who I am despite being here for so many years. This is to be expected since I haven't really accomplished anything nor have I contributed anything significant to the TL community. Although I only registered my account in 2004, I've been lurking around these forums since the site first started. I've watched the forums grow from a few members to what it is today. I essentially grew up reading these forums, which is why I think it is appropriate for me to to say my good byes here - even if no one knows who I am
Truth be told, this is my second time quitting gaming. The first time was in 2005. I was young... and in love... with BW. I had found myself playing BW for 12 hours/day throughout the summer. It didn't take long before I realized I had an addiction problem, so one day I just decided to stop playing and stopped visiting the forums. The first month was the toughest, but gradually it became easier and easier until BW was nothing but a distant memory.
Suddenly I'm in university and one of my old buddies told me about CSL. I was hesitant at first, but I told myself "why not?" and signed up for the school team. I signed up for an account on ICCup and started training. Needless to say, I was destroyed in my first games back after not playing for so many years. However, I made it to D+ with a reasonable 12-7 record. What was more shocking was how the game had completely evolved. I mean.... wtf is muta stacking?... who the hell is Bisu and why is everyone using his build?... At least PvT and PvP was still more or less the same.
I eventually made it to C+ during that season of ICCup. The beauty of BW is that it's a lot like riding a bike. You can get rusty after years of not biking, but you never forget.
SC2 is released! I didn't even touch the game for the first few of its release. I finished the campaign during the Christmas holiday and took a stab at the 1v1 shortly after. With no understanding of the game I marined, maraudered and expoed my way to diamond. It's like Day[9] always said during his BW dailies, the problem with lower ranked players is that they never have enough stuff.
I've given SC2 an honest try. I tried watching replays, watching streams, watching tournament streams, playing with friends, laddering etc., but SC2 just doesn't have a hook on me. Perhaps the game just isn't exciting? SC2 feels like a rock-paper-scissor match (lol... try to decipher all the meanings of that...). But more importantly, I think I've just outgrown gaming. I feel very indifferent whenever I win or lose, whereas in my youth I would become upset when I lose and celebrate when I win.
As for the TL forums itself, my soul cringes when I see what it has become. It pains me that there is now a need for red warnings for bad posts. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of quality posts everyday, but it's just a shame that I have to filter through the same number of useless posts to find them. I feel the new generation of gamers that have descended on this community have brought along with them a new culture. I'm too old, my bones are brittle, and I no longer have the strength to adapt.
And with that, I bid my farewell to gaming and to my internet home TL. I will still play BW and SC2 every now and then, but it will probably only be whenever I find myself with 20-30 minutes to kill. As I'm trying to conclude this, I'm having glimpses of picking up my copy of SC1 11 years ago. I'm 21 now and I'm looking at the very same CD sitting on my desk, and you know what? I think I might install the game and play a few before the night is over.
gg TL. Thanks for the memories and thanks for being my childhood.
tl;dr see ya

Just because you're quitting the game doesn't mean you have to quit the community :O
I quit SC2 months ago and I still love the forums!

True that.
I don't play BW or SC2 AT ALL anymore and I still love TL and watching Proleague and such.
You ultimately decide your path though, so good luck!

You'll be back!!! I hope at least watch the TSL?
Anyway. Best of luck in the future and never forget us!
It pains me that there is now a need for red warnings for bad posts We have something in the works with regard to this actually.

yeah I don't game too much anymore. SC2 didn't really hook me. I occasionally pick up a single player game like bioshock or amnesia but that's about it. I still come around here for my mafia forum. Anyway I am sure you will find your way back here eventually. Most of us do, even if we gave up gaming.

I hope you're not in your twentys because that's so early to give up gaming. I remember a few of my friends quit gaming in their first year of college. They thought they outgrew it. They were wrong lol. Now they say things like g4l. Or gamer 4 life
Just read you are 21. Don't worry. You'll be back to gaming. Lol.

I agree with the posters above me, you may not enjoy playing video games anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy watching the professionals at work. I haven't played SC2 in 6 months and bw in 9 months, yet my passion for proleague/OSL/MSL and GSL are as strong as they've ever been. It's the same with any other sport.

You're fooling yourself if you think you won't be back. 21 is far too young to be citing generational differences and giving up TL is probably more of a phase than a sign of maturity. Maybe you're spending too much time in sc2 LR threads and strategy?

A poignant post--I'm sure a lot of people who have played/been playing BW for a while can relate to some degree.

Regarding your perspective on the content of the forums, if you look at an old topic in any old thread you'll see that the posts were often one-line garbage, flaming, arguing, et cetera. It's not that all the TL newbies today are making more crappy posts; it's that there was much less moderating then. The quality of posting has probably risen, on average. Example: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=7949¤tpage=All
I did the same as you for a while--left in college during Savior's rise, then came back wondering who the hell Taekbang-Leessang were, where was Leg's kangaroo and why PuertoRican wasn't posting anymore

I'm having the opposite problem, I just feel so unmotivated to do other things (programming, homework, etc.) and do that in my "free time" and game for the majority of my time. I wish I could be like you =(
Maybe SC2 will become an amazing game in a couple of expansions' time, and you'll be back then
|
I agree with the indifference to winning or losing in SC2, but bw? A hard-fought win is still amazing =/

Even death cannot keep Juliet from her Romeo

And to go off with a bang, I'm gonna play in the TL Open this weekend
|
sounds like a good decision, cya OP.

You dont have to leave!!! I stopped playing sc2 and bw for a few months and still came here every day for the community. Now i play sc2 again though

You can't quit gaming.. that's unjust. What will your children think of you when you say, "Oh sure i'm one of the few with an authentic 2004 registered TL account.. But I gave that up.." They'll call you a sham, a fraud a pussy even. Do you want to be that man? Or do you want to be the man that told the world to go to hell and kept gaming. Your choice.
