Well, here we go again. Another day at the greatest Starcraft website in existence. I'm quite sure today will be full of insightful, well thought out and interesting discussions. Heh.
Might as well start in the strategy forum. That's the biggest garbage dump this site has. Oh, wait a second I need to see the over/under today. Twenty five threads that will need deleting, and/or bans from the OP? I'm soo taking the over on this. Kennegit is going to pay out his ass today.
So, what do we have here? Zerg crying thread, Zerg crying thread, Zerg crying thread. Terran crying thread? This has to be a joke or something. Blah blah blah Collosus too strong, blah blah blah Banelings, blah blah blah. What in the living hell? Is he serious? A Planetary Fortress should be able to lift off? For God's sake, why are kids huffing paint still? Back in my day, to be an idiot, we just smoked pot and watched South Park. I'll give him a two day banning, hoping science can devise a way to regrow brain cells in that ridiculously short amount of time.
"New Zerg opening? 14 Hatch 15 Hatch 17 Hatch 19 Pool: Viable?" Do people intentionally write moronic things just to piss me off? Perhaps we should revert the world of video games back to the 2600 where all they had was a little joystick and one button to press. Even then, people would claim the asteroids in Asteriods were OP.
Well, onward we go. Let's see if the General section has anything worthwhile.
Homosexual slur, homosexual slur, L2P, about fifty instances of the word “Grack or Gracken”, NASL conspiracy theories, Kelly hate, Artosis doesn't have the flu, he has Leprosy. Leprosy huh? Well, out of everything I've read today, that does seem the least insane. Finding a thread like that and it being the least insane? Remind me again why I do this? Good lord.
Interesting. A modest, yet informational thread title. It is organized, it has lots of paragraphs. Capital letters and periods are being used. A spoiler section which goes into greater detail and still very well organized. Graphics, charts, evidence and testing? Holy mother of Aiur, this is the best day all week! I don't give a crap if this thread is about milking cows. Spotlighted.
I think I'll head over to Blogs. Maybe a new Starcraft song has come out or something. Those are usually endlessly entertaining.
Team Liquid mods are Nazis and too harsh in their moderation. If I hadn't seen this exact same thread about seven thousand other times, that would probably upset me. If people only knew the crap that all the mods have to sift through every single day, they'd probably run screaming to the Neopets or Gaia forums to try and reestablish their grip on reality.
Another one of those idiotic “A something something Day or Life of something something” threads. This guy should really learn to write comedy. Testing out material Dane Cook would find as “C” team worthy and posting on TL is a pretty sad way to spend his time. At least he tries. I hear he's extremely handsome though.
Relationship advice hmm? Girlfriend cheated on you but you still love her. Must resist temptation to tell him to forgive her and reassure she isn't a stupid whore that won't keep doing it to him over and over, while almost certainly cheating on him with at least four times as many people he believes she has. No no, must be professional. I'll just shut my mouth and let all the nerd love pros handle this one.
I need to talk to Hot Bid and see about getting a word filter in place to change the word “Noob” to “Delightful Human Beings” or something. I think that word gets tossed around here more than “A” or “I” does.
Screw this, I'm sick of banning people . I'll just wait for Manifesto to show up. That guy destroys more accounts than a nuclear bomb destroys Drones. I'm going to take a nap. Someone get me up in time for the TSL Qualifiers. After those run, I'll have another fifteen hours of bans and threads to lock.
Strat forum description is a total understatement.
Moderation is really no fun. Only rarely do you get to beat the crap out of some "tits or gtfo" idiot or ban tdot for the hundredth time. Most of the time it's closing terrible threads by people who write 5 lines of "omg why did I lose fuck terran" than watch their own replay.
I can completely understand where you're coming from... I was a moderator on a forum about 9 years ago, after which I promised myself I'd never do it again for any forum. I've turned down 3 offers since on other sites.
It's very time consuming to do the job well and you get next to no credit from the community at large, even though you're doing it for free to help the community. Heck, more often than not you just get flamed for your troubles.
Strategy forum? Live report is even worse. Yesterday I can't watch GSL live so I have to rely on LR. I have to search like 3 pages for a single game update
teamliquid would be like 10x better if all zergs that are lower than mid masters weren't allowed to post. So annoying to see everyday some long ass post about how zerg sux and protoss and terran is op.
hahaha. I was like, are there any mods that are whiny, usually don't do shit, but sometimes burst out with like 50 bans? And won't ban me if I call them on it?
I moderate several streams with several thousand people in them regularly, it's hardly fun, the only perk being your opinion gets listened to more often.
Moderating a forum, especially one on the scale of teamliquid with several thousand AROUND THE CLOCK posting etc. would be unreal. As is, I only read like 5 sections on TL, general, sports&games, tl community, sc2 general, blogs, with the occassional BW section and BW Tournaments to read results of proleague.

This may be a perfect description of Chill. I mean both physically (despite being nearly the same color, his hair is not that long, don't bring that up. What I'm saying is overall body description. I saw Day[9]'s photos with him, his body looks kinda buff despite not being this much and he said he was 5'4'' in a response to someone's blog post) and as a personality on TL.

Damn thats actually kinda depressing, I suppose its different when you're on an IRC stream and posting in a thread, but yeah ouch.

Oh man, I would love an user equivalent of undercover agent- icon looks ordinary, but is super mod behind the lines! At least it would give more reason for random people to refer to TL as fascist forum with all its secret police.

Maybe we (as a community) should stop posting those garbage/crying/hate/stupid posts and threads. Mods would surely appreciate that more than appreciation thread.

Ahhhh ... the world of management.
The absorption and dedication required, the lack of credit or appreciation, dealing with bitching and questions constantly ... yeah. I've seen a lot of managers do one project and swear off it for life.
Managing people is the biggest pain in the ass in the world. You have to be a bit of a psychopath/control freak to enjoy it.
I think those who can't manage themselves are a bit of the psychopaths. There are only 10 rules on TL.net and they're just confines of civility you would have in real life.
How fucking hard is it to follow them?
Let me give you the rules in very Layman's terms:
1. My house, my rules, bitch. What I say, goes. If yo aren't paying for the roof, you don't get to woof
2. Don't waste time and stop being a whiny hole where the sun doesn't shine. Be civil and contain yourself. Don't do what you don't like others doing to you.
3. Think before opening your mouth
4. If you're living under my house, earn your place around here. This isn't your home, it's my home. Contribute or add to the upkeeping.
5. Don't not be contributory. Oh and don't use double-negatives
6. Respect your elders. They've earned their keep. They know how shit works and news flash: they've somehow managed to be civil and respectable people
7. Speak English. It's just easier that way.
8. Be who you are suppose to be. If you're Kathy Griffin, stay the hell away. If you're Johnny Carson, come on in.
9. You must be this literate to enter TL.net
10. Have fun, I didn't build this swingset to have tea in it.
And those are the rules. They're overlapping practically. I don't understand how anyone can get banned unless they're psychopaths. Warned? Yeah, I got warned, but because I failed to abide to the formal public warning. But that's it.
I'm getting breaking news right now: The mods are people Does this mean that there's leniency within the staff when you unintentionally break a rule?
have administrated/moderated afew international forum communities in the past, and the biggest was like 10-15k users of which perhaps a few hundred were really active, and it was definitely a soul-trashing experience, granted there were occasional satisfactions that are hard to come by. i definitely feel your pain.
i can't even imagine trying to mod teamliquid, you people are insane for even trying as hard as you do, let alone actually managing it. much love to all of you
edit: forgot to add capsed LOLZ for the paint masterpiece chill posted, that looks like a pretty good rendition of his reality :-))

I totally get the mods. I used to be mod on another forum filled with people from different subcultures, from punk rockers to bears (the homosexuals, not the animal), and a shitstorm could come from any topic.
I've been called nazi a few times, even been called a 'red fascist', whatever that means, and it was amazing how much people could whine, and not be able to see, that they were in the wrong.
Being a n00b here, I really enjoy the way the mods work here, and all I can say is: keep up the good work.

I agree, I've been really scared to post in controversial threads since I got mod powers. I think the risk is that people will interpret what we say as representing TL, which is especially problematic in any threads about the SC community/its members. With great power blah blah blah.

Oh god, the tears. The tears. This is painfully funny.
great read, while i enjoy some of the retarded threads (i always read the closed thread part of TL for the lols, having to moderate it every day must be a bore, but its got to be done i guess or else this place would fall apart
I started posting on TL when I saw how the site was moderated. I like starcraft and I saw people who were into fostering a community around it. Honestly the fact that TL is so big and that you guys still choose to stay on top of things says a lot. I've seen large communities fall apart because of bad moderation.
For example, I'm part of site that has over 700,000 registered members, it's been around for 10 years, but the forums are now dead. People still use the site for the other functions, but the traffic has significantly died over the years. A big reason: poor moderation. Even popular members left because they felt like they were being flamed constantly and disrespected.
So keep on trucking TL.
Also, I'd imagine IdrA more as Vegeta. Rage and pride. Attitude and power. He's actually perfect for him....
Before openign this thread I thought I knew exactly what I was going to read, and I was right. Eventhough i'm not a member for a long time.. actually I am but lost all my old account info because I changed sites to follow WC3 news, doesn't matter anyway. I think I understand how the mods of this site feel, I don't have to do any thing and when I visit the forums all I see is: "Another balance thread, another guy who did some useless research and put hours into it, more balance shit, a little more balance, a new SC2 song (YEAH!!!), NASL info (yeah information..., read the comments, every 2nd page the same questions pop up again...) , more balance, more zerg/toss/protss crying. I wouldn't like to be a TL mod, I don't want to go on a 100 ban banning streak everyday, not the best way to start of your day. Appreciate all the work you guys put into it though, thanks TL.
I realized today I'm EXTREMELY spoiled by how awesome TL moderation is. I can't step into any other forum without completely raging at morons. Thanks TL for keeping my blood pressure low (somewhat) and extending my lifespan. TL mods save lives!

Oh god yes. The hon general forums are utter trash, and the way the community acts is disgusting. TL acturally amazes me with how civil people are with each other (Or atleast appear to be)
Searching through the strat forum to find high quality threads that address an issue is already a bit of a chore. I could not imagine what it would be like to actually have to do that on a regular basis. Fortunately, I don't really have to and each thread they close puts me one step closer to finding answers I want.
I've seen a lot of forums decay when a game (or in the case of WoW--a race) becomes the flavor of the month. Even when I go on to read non-gaming related forums (i.e. news forums) I'm dismayed but not shocked how pitiful some forums/threads/comments can be.
I am pleasantly surprised that TL continues to rise to the challenge--making sure threads on cow milking have a place to shine. (Is cow milking code for something? I need to know I'm not being deceived by some new internet meme)
I just like let the moderators know that you guy possibly the reason why I keep coming back to this site. I think TL has possibly the best moderators on any gaming website I ever visited.
I used to moderate a forum ages ago, and while it wasn't anywhere near as big as TL is now it was still a bit of a chore to do, so much respect to the mods. btw the pictures in this thread have made me laugh hard even with this painfully sore throat so i don't know if i should thank you lot or not

Lol I hit it by accident so many times. Mouse hovers over it for a moment and then somehow I tap my middle mouse button from the side, and the supersensitive thing clicks it! Good thing there is a form to fill out after you click it.

this is basically what it is:
banlings are a collection of forum veterans who were selected based on their post history and character to moderate the forums. they are a team, just like graphics, writers, translators, liquipedia etc.
moderators (reds) are mostly people who have made long-term contributions to the site in various ways (you can find these people with blue names) and were eventually given the ability to moderate. reds also participate in discussion about site direction, policy, and new features etc.

I wish I could be a moderator , but I don't know the hell that they go through every day. If I became a moderator: 1. I would celebrate by banning some retards on the strategy forum. 2. See some more retards and go through their post history etc. to see how long their ban should be. 3. Close 712830371820371802 threads crying imbalance. 4. See some more idiots and ban them. 5. See MORE idiots and I start to get really pissed and tired. 6. I scream, pull my hair out, etc and end up going to a mental hospital. 7. I hear Jinro wins the GSL and I go sane for about 2 days before going mad again due to the strategy forum. Im guessing that is what mods will go through.
What's the problem if there actually is a report button? I don't see the problem with threads where people are ranting about whatever, as long as they try to make a point, and I've never seen a thread here that fails in doing so, although I only read the BW section.
I was about to make some shitty thread about zerg and balance, because Im on a bad loss streak and raging right now, but i just saw this thread and saw how much work the mods do, so I'll refrain from starting up something like that : ) .
Being a TL moderator is not an easy job. I've had to moderate forums in the past (nothing this big, but still large) and its always a lose lose situation. Its a ton of thankless work that you do because to believe in something.
Thanks for all the good work. We all appreciate it, even if its not shown all the time.
When I was like, 12, I thought being a mod was awesome. Then I matured and became a mod on a couple sites all at once and I've never been so horrified. Then I quit and it was beautiful.
