I was curious about the amount of competitive SC2 players in Southern California.
I am not talking about only pro level players, or highly recognized players, but all players in So Cal at a diamond/master league level who would be interested in competing in a tournament regularly, maybe a monthly tournament, or maybe even a tournament that spans over a month long period, where each month would be run like a season, sort of similiar to the GSL.
I know this would cost more money, so it would probably just be a tournament over the weekend or something. I would like it to be a monthly thing though. I want to set up some kind of consistant tournament scene in southern california for people who do take SC2 somewhat seriously, or at least seriously enough to want to compete.
I would just host it at a local Lan Center here in Southern California (Inland Empire, Orange County, Los Angeles County). It would consist of maybe a 30$ entry fee, with that covering cost of the lan center, and would cover costs of say ordering pizza/drinks for every1 playing in the tournament. I also have a screen printer who I could get to make shirts for cheap.
With enough participation we could even have two seperate tournaments, one for masters league and one for diamond league players, so we could have more winners, because i know a lot of people are turned off by paying to participate in an event where a dominant player will be.
Before I start planning one of these type of tournaments though I would like to get a sense of whether or not this is worth the time required to set it up. I would be having entire bracket boards made up, as well as a website made to track winners, and at the end of the year we could have a sort of championship tournament where all of the winners are put against eachother.
These are just my thoughts at this moment. I really want to get more active in the e-sports scene even if it is in putting together some sort of amateur southern california league, and if it does well I have plans for future things. Including the possibility of a Tournament Warehouse complete with professional "booths" like the pro's use. But that is a long ways away from now, I would like to see if this sort of scene is even viable in Southern California First.
Sorry for the wall of text, in short: If you are a Southern California player interested in competing in a tournament/tournament series, or in establishing a tournament scene in Southern California, post it up please. Thanks.
(Also it would have to be pre-paid as well as pre-registered so the event info is solid and will not suffer from flakes or drop outs.)

I made a NorCal blog, and it had like 8 replies. Watch: this blog will be 5 times as big.

Inland empire is pretty far away from most socal areas that would include players I would imagine... I am from LA i know some from pasadena and Irvine most of the UC areas as well. So Inland Empire is a bit far. Fullerton is generally a good place to host a lan from what I have seen.

I'd be interested. I'm in the OC area near Huntington.

In the past there were plenty of BW tournies held. Cyber Cafe Planet in HB http://www.cybercafeplanet.com/ was actually one good location that was used (among many). For sc2 there was the green forest lan which was a pretty awesome event, but the issues with that one were the amount of computers and space for players as well as spectators.

I used to be really active in the Pro Counter-Strike scene and Orange county, or Sou cal in general is saturated with PC lan places. I can name more within a 15 mile radius then I have fingers and toes. The environment and resources is there and ready for SC2 any other competitive game.

also lan in IE? isn't that the 909? meh, if meth lab owners played starcraft sure that could work, but OC or LA would be better locations. I'd rather drive 2 hours to San Diego than 45 minutes to riverside.

i live in temecula/murrieta pretty close to riverside

I'm in marina del rey. I'd be interesting in participating.

I don't think there are super huge lan centers in the LA area, i'm not sure, i have only been to a few korean PC Bangs and they are ~20 computers in a small area

I'm in Culver City and may be interested, though Inland Empire is a little further than I would like to travel...

Harvey Mudd College has a SC2 team (HMC is located in Claremont) so some players on the team might be interested.

I live in Irvine currently but my hometown is in the Inland Empire area. I think you can almost guarantee participation from the SoCal community
Sounds like a great idea, but I'd like some specifics. Do you have any LAN centers who will participate for good certainty? Have you begun contacting potential sponsors? The idea is great but personally my friends and I have bounced this idea off each other numerous times that are similar to this and I know other people discussed the possibilities of a big socal tournament/community type deal.. If you can make it happen, then that would be amazing, but as of now I'm not gonna hold my breath until there is something tangible emerging for your idea.
I'm all for the idea though. I know there a good number of active socal tournaments, online and "LAN", going on. They just need to be centralized, because the SoCal SC2 community is pretty solid.

I'm in Santa Barbara which is pretty far from most of SoCal, but if this was happening in LA or something I might be interested in making the drive down.
|
Wow I am glad to see some responses.
I will change the OP to state that I have no problem hosting it in a lan center in a more centralized location such as OC or Closer at least to LA. Also have a lot of plans in the works atm if this works out. Possibly even a single event with 250 players hosted in Anaheim, but that's not what this post is about. This Post is about hosting a smallish tournament in the So Cal Area to gauge interest.
If anyone has a "preferred" lan center out towards OC let me know. This tournament would be a smaller tournament (hopefully between 32-64 players.)

I'm in Santa Monica, Master zerg, I've played in a few LANs, but other than greenforest haven't been so well run that they were fun to play in.
|
I'm in Fullerton, work in Riverside. I don't know that I'd compete in a tournament(I get really nervous in those kinds of situations) but I would gladly drop by/spectate.

I'm in Fullerton, OC area. Definitely interested. I get nervous in tournament settings, never feel like I'm as good as anyone else, so I think it's time to put some of those fears to rest

For me to be able to answer this question I would need some information regarding your current place of residence. =).
(hahahah did that sound creepy enough?)
and i would need to know exactly which room you slept in...
lol jk.
but seriously the location is given in the original post so everyone should be able to judge whether ior not the event is close enough just through that.

I'm in HB/ Garden Grove area I suppose, and I'd be interested, and yes All4ONE is having a lan in fullerton with lots of high level players there so everyone that is in the area should definitely come out!
p.s. I know of cyber world cafe and that place is decent, I like this place in diamond bar plaza near AI called e-games, has great lighting, clean keyboards, and over 50 computers. However that is a like further for some of us :T

I'm based out of the San Fernando Valley, but I'd be more than happy to make the trip down to the OC to make it to one of these.
