Look at that clock. Its face is divided by 12. You can't put more than 12 marks on a clock face or it gets way too crowded. Look at this shit:
Or this fucking horror:
I love the man who put his foot down and said he would not put more than 12 marks on a clock.
So what do you call the 13th hour of the day?
There are two popular solutions. 12h time, which starts back at 1 for the 13th hour, and differentiates the halves of the day with AM and PM. 24h time, which assigns two labels to each mark, calling them 13-24 the second time around.
Both of these are bullshit. 24h is of course worse. 24h acts like there are more than 12 marks. What a fucking scam. 12h is also bad since it requires an extra label. Either way, the clock face itself loses significance. To be exact, it loses half of its significance. Half of the time it's one thing and the other half it's another. I want the full fucking force of reading a clock face. Does no one else desire this?
When choosing between the 12h and 24h systems, did no one consider the sublime alternative I have in mind? I truly hope it was ignorance and not an extreme failure in judgment that caused such catastrophes to befall the world of time tellers.
Behold.
120 minutes in an hour. I would love to read such a clock. Full force. The time hits you as soon as you see it. And you know it isn't bullshitting. It means what it says. And I know what you're thinking: wouldn't reading the minutes be more difficult by cramming twice as many into the face? No! There's beauty here. 12 marks on the clock. 120 minutes. We fucking love things divisible by 10. Hand on the 1? 10 minutes. Near the 2? 20 minutes. Sweet serenity.
But if you changed an hour to contain 120 minutes you couldn't make your minutes consist of 120 seconds without changing the definiton of the second (to half of what it currently is). There then you'd have some inconsistency, 60 seconds in a minute but at the same time 120 minutes in an hour? That would be weird. And you'd have to make everybody on Earth do the change at the same time or else people are not going to be able to know what seconds are as they'll each have a different idea of a second.
Although I do have to point out that although it seems like things divisible by 10 are more convenient, the reason the imperial system uses a lot of 12s and 24s is that they are divisible by many numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 6).
Do you know why it's called the imperial system, by the way? Because it was invented by THE BRITISH EMPIRE YOU SLAGS. Hope you feel real superior now; faced with a choice of acknowledging the culture that spawned your own, or bowing down to the hated European metric system.
On February 16 2011 09:43 awu25 wrote: why not just redefine the second so that there are 100 seconds in a minute 100 minutes in an hour and 10 hours in a day
Cuz Americans hate the Metric system because it's way too easy to understand. It makes perfect sense.
120 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and 12 hours in a day would work too, and would be a pyramid in terms of number size, unlike MM/DD/YY in the States
I like the idea, but it can be much simpler than that. I would love for there to be 10 hours in day. As in, you divide the earth's rotation into 10 bits an call each an hour. Each hour should then be divided into 100 more bits called minutes, each minute into 100 seconds etc etc etc. This will of course mean a new layout for the non-digital clocks, so each number should be 36 degrees apart. ez - like our metric system and you would be able to read the time off the clock without having to think in pm and am.
God fucking damn. Now I know why Team Liquid is simply the greatest Starcraft team out there... They have the most brilliant thinkers on the face of the planet. /story
Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where they try to create a utopia by using the chapter of Mensa and skinner discusses how the trains are running on time now
Skinner: "Oh excellent, not only are the trains now running on time, they're running on metric time. Remember this time people, 80 past 2 on April 47th, it's the dawn of a new enlightenment."
Alright, I like your idea in theory, but here are my issues.
-Think of all the math textbooks that would instantly become obsolete -11:118 doesn't exactly roll off the tongue -Bigger numbers mean people will get caught up in the math of calculating time, even if everything is divisible by 10 (myself, derp, I do paper math). -Smelly old people won't change their inefficient ways (cough..imperial sucks..cough...cough) -Couldn't you already just do this with a regular 12 hour clock, but imagine the minute ticks represent 2 minutes? No need to revolt, but we can have secret Tyler TL time if you want.
I thought the whole time thing was solved by swatch internet time. It worked for PSO, hell even php has a swatch time function. I use it everyday. Posted @257 BMT
Of course! Time is already metric, but it was currupted by 12s and 60s. Tyler is taking us in the right direction of 10s and simplicity. I'm expecting for a clock with 10 numbers on it to appear in the background of Mengsk's office in HotS. Get on that blizz.
the clock houses a circular knitting machine with 48 needles, a thread spool, a thread holder and roll of yarn. moving in clockwise direction, one day leads to a complete round, while a year gives users 2 meters of a complete scarf.

Actually, before the republic, China had hours that were two hours long. Thats why an hour is now called xiaoshi, meaning small hour. There should be clocks of this somewhere..
Apparently Tyler doesn't know that our time units (and angles, those are basically the same in astronomical time keeping) are one of the last remnants of the old Babylonian base 60 counting system.
And I'd love to get rid of the base 10 numbers and have base 60 for ordinal numbers. Why? Because 60 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Also by 10 and 12. Easy splitting of amounts all around.
I probably have spent more time on that than anyone should, but while at it, also consolidate the general unit system to a natural plank constant based measuring. And the alphabet to a 60 letters so you can use the same symbols for them as for ordinal numbers while the writing is a korean style syllable grouping. For non natural numbers use a balanced ternary denotation which also could (and IMHO should) be the base of digital technology.
But preexisting standards are very very hard to get rid of, especially those so deeply embedded in culture.

I like mathematics ... it solves almost every problem in life.
For example, substitution ... just substitude the DJ in DJwheat by null set, then light it, wait 10 minutes and after that, everything in this threat makes perfect sense.

or imo an improved version: Wouldnt make more sense to go 1day = 12 hours, 1hr = 60minutes, 1min = 120 seconds rather than the 1day = 12 hours, 1hr = 120minutes, 1min = 60 seconds And if you had to mod the design of any current analog clocks you just need to half the speed of everything! Instead of everything but the seconds. (converting digital clocks to either schem should be very simple)
I feel like my mind was just crushed by the weight of the brilliance. Surely you must research blink and position your stalkers on the edge of the cliff above the timekeeping community so that you can deny their mineral patches.
Why. The. Fuck. would I think of Kulas Ravine in a time like OH FUCKING BECAUSE IT IS THE MAP EQUIVALENT OF THE 12-HOUR CLOCK

While we're dropping our genius ideas, I'll put out the million dollar idea I came up with today: Couple mittens. It's one mitten with two holes on either side so couples can hold hands inside a mitten. Would sell millions in Korea.

I saw these in the window of a tourist shop by Nathan Phillips Square the other day. They were called "smitten mittens". gg

Noooooooooooooooooo
Their name for the mittens were higher ranked on iCCup than your's. Sorry Chill!

I'm pretty sure they extrapolated their rank, while Chill's is actual.
120min hour would bring us one step closer back to the greatest, most legendary clock of all .. the northern hemisphere ursa minor constellation with Polaris being it's center and Kocab the clock arm. You might say .. well 1 big universal clock hmm .. no jet lag but what about the incongruences between sunrise-sunset all over the world and throughout the year even considering just a single location. Phuck that .. it's not like 9 pm in winter comparable to 9 pm summer when it comes to daytime duration so why be so touchy about that. Think about it, who cares what part of the globe you're on and you're angle to the sun .. the sense of unity. Ahh the lost sense of unity would be revived and we could all tune-in to the next starcraft tournament final at the same 1 time.
Oh no this thread is over 2 months old, better have a good reason uuuuuhhh wacha gonna do?

Just curious if anyone else downloaded this and was able to work it. I tried PMing ixuz asking how to use it but I haven't heard from him (I figured 10 days was reasonable to wait before adding to my post count).
EDIT: I am mostly curious to find out if anyone downloaded and tried to run this, because when I did so myself, I saw no sort of clock being displayed, but more importantly, around the same time I did this I started experiencing problems with my internet connectivity. My initial 'guess' and current feeling as that this is nothing more than coincidence, but I just was looking for some sort of confirmation/reassurance.
