So I've been thinking a lot about what DJWheat and Chill said about how the GSL groups are unintuitive, especially while watching the actual games. I thought it would be great to have a bracket template that neatly conveys information about the importance of each game to the overall picture. I am obviously not any sort of graphics design artist, but I took a shot at kind of a skeleton of what something like that might look like. It essentially uses space and color to convey information about the state of the group.

It's all meant to be fairly intuitive but just in case:
+ Show Spoiler +
The horizontal lines keep track of wins. When a player gets across the thick middle line, he has qualified to advance.

Green means not in danger.
Yellow means one loss away from elimination.
Red means eliminated.
Blue and Green distinguish the 1/2 seeds out of the advancing players.
Orange and Red distinguish the 3/4 seeds out of the eliminated players.

This is obviously not fit to actually be used, but I thought it might be a good jumping off point for someone more talented than I am. Any and all feedback is welcome, except saying "That looks like a POS made in paint," because yes it is, and yes I know.

To make it clearer, I might go back and show what it would look like with a few of the actual groups. Probably using the players' portraits with a colored border.

Games 1 and 2 are set by GOM

Games 3 and 4 are: The winner of the first game plays the loser of the second game.

In Games 5 and 6 players with the same record play against each other. If all 4 players are 1-1 then they will face the player they have not yet played.

---

Interesting note: You cannot play your first round opponent twice in this setup but have a chance to replay your second round opponent.

It's an interesting approach to tournament groups, I don't think anything like it has ever been used in BW. The only problem I have with it is the fact that often there are rematches, which I think is sort of absurd. But it's more or less alright- the best players generally advance and the worse players generally don't. It's decent, I think it could be better but it's not like it's completely ruining the GSL experience for me

I do like how the round of 16 is group play too instead of single elimination, I think GOM did a great job there.
good vibes only

Is there a name for this system? I couldn't find it on the tournament page on wikipedia or on google. It feels really stupid because I remember there was a scenario where one player had to play a tiebreak set to determine whether he would move on even though he only played 2/3 opponents. So rather than playing the weakest opponent in the group to get a win he had to play a stronger player in a tie break. Of course, I say I "feel" this way because I don't actually know anything about this system or it's logic, so if someone could post a link that'd be great.

There isn't a link. It's a self made system afaik from GOM.

The scenario where one player had to play a tie break set might refer to round 3 when there was 1 player 2-0 and 2 players tied at 1-1 (last with 0-2). The 1-1 players would then play another game to decide the 2nd and 3rd place in the group.

Usually when his happens it's because a higher seeded player lost to a lower seeded player (MC vs Jinro) so the higher seeded gets another chance to redeem himself against the lower seeded.

The higher seeded players always played the lower seeded players first.

In the GSL of 2nd groupstage of Jinro he had to play MK a lower seed but lost that first game. Thus he had to play the winner of another match a high seed vs low seed (which was MC the high seed).

In essence this system is designed to be favourable to the high seeds (jinro/idra/nada and other ro8/ro16 finishers) compared to the low seeds.

So this way the higher seeded players that performs consistently and/or places high in a tournament gets to stay longer in code S the highest league whilst trying to weed out the less succesfull players for newcomers.

Well, this wasn't really mean to be a blog about the relative merits of the GSL group system, but a discussion about graphically represent it :-/ Anyway, I did a mock up of GpE from the RO32 from this season. It is a Case 1 bracket. I'll do one of each each, but I'll post them as I do them in case anyone has a great insight that will save me some work.

I'm going to exclude spoilers for now, mostly because of image resizing, but will eventually try to figure out exactly how to block the post out. Tell me what you think!
