1) I got owned on my calc final  Got C.  Parents very madmadmadmadmadmadmadmadmadmad. I’m madmadmadmadmadmadmadmad at myself  I got 98% on my Chem final. Still have a B. Still owned the hell out of it. :DD
2) OK, I admit it. My study habits suck. Although I do well on tests in general it’s not because I prepared pa rticularly well. Does anyone have any advice as to how to better study, and STAY ORGANIZED in school. My two biggest flaws. :/
3) I’d like to go to the most recent Bay Area LAN, but I don’t think my parents will let me.  Any ideas as to how I can convince them to let me go?
4) Err, I’m ashamed to admit it but I edit Wikipedia In any case I’m looking for help expanding articles about professional starcraft. Although most people who edit the topic mean well most are unfamiliar with notability guidelines, sourcing, verifiability, etc. The kiorean Wikipedia would appear to have done a good job, so any translation help/finding of reliable Korean sources would be good. Also, some people currently involved in professional starcraft deserve articles still: But writing them and establishing notability is a pain. Any help in this area would be appreciated.
5) There will be an episode of Froadac Rambles about life (FIRST EPISODE) coming later today/this week. Prepare to be blown away by sheer excitement as your favorite rage blog writer talks about TL. Episodes to be found at www.youtube.com/bpcoxkr until I actually get a Froadac account running Suggest threads you want me to look at.
6) Finally parents are raging hard. For lack of a better term. Keep on talking about how I”ve wasted their work, how I’m lazy, play too much, work too little, get too little sleep (7.5 hours too little?) blah blah blah. Mom keeps on yelling today, saying that I’m a disappointment to the family, and that she doesn’t know what to do with me. She fluctuates between yelling at me for being worse than her (she never got a B, had a weekend job at age 17, went to UCSF), telling me that I’m such a failure they should stop trying, and saying she should have done more and threatening to enact a strict nazi rule. Not sure exactly what to do =/

when you started talking about your mom calling you a failure I really started to taste the hyperbole dripping from your lips

staying organized is easy in high school. buy a binder, take notes, keep your notes in order. when you have to study, study the notes you have. your IQ probably isn't that high but you only think so because you don't have to study for tests, but neither did I and neither did half of TL in high school because high school is easy.

just listen to your parents and learn how to study now before it bites you in the ass in college when you realize you are, in fact, not a prodigy.

It'll be your worst and best realization in university, seeing that you're not the best at everything and you actually have to play assignments and exams to your strengths. It was a sad sad day when I realized it, and my parents were just like "I told you so."
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Too many students think they are exceptional because they get average grades without working hard. This isn't the case. Everyone has potential and "high IQ" and everyone has trouble studying hard. Being organized and working hard is way more valuable than whatever innate intelligence you believe you have, but you seem to think it's the other way. The moment you realize that work ethic, not "intelligence," is far more rare / valuable / important, the better your grades will be. My advice is to stop being lazy.

yep....
it took me a while to kick it into gear in uni; it's not the material that was hard but the adjustment of actually having to do work this time around. i quite literally never studied in high school. i maintain that the first term of uni was my hardest (doing my last term now) for that very reason

try to improve your work ethic now; it's a slow & laborious process, especially since it's not necessary right now.. aka very hard to stay motivated.

I agree with Hot_Bid, but here's some specific advice, having been in precisely the same position you are in not too long ago.

Get a big whiteboard. Use it to make a calendar of everything that's coming up. I tried all sorts of calendars and time management things, but the whiteboard really helps.

Study for your exams. Do practice exams. If you don't have practice exams, ask your teachers for extra problems to do.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I know it seems like busywork bullshit, but it'll help you do well through repetition. I skimped on all my homework, and ended up with 5s on all aps, 95-98%s on all my exams, and a 3.0 gpa.

Play SC more efficiently. You can play less, and do better. Play only when you're in a relaxed state of mind, able to focus. You'll be able to play less and win more

Hope this helps

I coasted though elementary school, middle school, and high school, with perfect grades, and never studying. I aced tests without even looking at the books. I lied to teachers, abused my admin privileges on the school network, and manipulated my way to good grades. In my senior year of HS I got an 86 on a class presentation I never even did.

I got my ass handed to me in my 2nd semester of college.

Growing up everyone in my family, and all my teachers always told me, "You're so smart, but you're so damned lazy. You could accomplish so much if you just applied yourself!"

At the time, I thought to myself, "Fuck that, school's easy, I'm gonna slack off and play games. I can still get good grades w/e you guys dunno wtf ur talkin' about."

And then one day the work got hard, and I couldn't ace tests without studying... and suddenly I realized I didn't even know how to apply myself to things. I had zero work ethic. I was sooo fucked.

My brother, conversely, had learning disabilities. He struggled to spell simple words, had to go to a tutor for YEARS, and struggled through every single class he ever took. But he learned how to work hard, and apply himself, and kicked the shit out of his college education.

Guess which of us graduated college first? (and I'm 2.5 years older)

Many people think high school is easy. For example, I got an A+ in Chemistry and a 5 on the AP without studying a single minute, or actually doing any of the homework. Eventually, though, you will pass a threshold where you no longer think things are easy. I'm in college now, and I actually have to do work and study for my classes.

So even though I don't like it, I realize I have to do a few things now. First, I don't put off work anymore. You can't save it all up until the day before the final, and expect to cram it all in one night. Second, do more work than your teacher assigns. For my Organic Chemistry class, for example, I literally went through the entire textbook and did every single problem in it. I spent 28 hours in two days just studying Organic Chemistry, and the final was still two weeks away. I thought it was ridiculous, but I did it anyway, because I know that I need to improve my work ethic.

Lurking this thread for advice because I'm terrible at requesting help.

It seems to me, however, the Froadac is saying the exact same thing you're telling him he must realize: he's not an omniscient prodigy and needs better study skills--this is exactly what I gleaned from the OP...I don't know whether that was terrible reading comprehension on my part, but he says, "Although I do well on tests in general it’s mostly because I have a high IQ, and not because I prepared particularly well", implying that his deficiencies in test scores can and should be solved by better study skills.

I have the same problem myself as I just cannot bring myself to study effectively...I winged pretty much all of my finals this week, and I just cannot comprehend how one is supposed to study (just read the book/notes? :S). A lot the information from throughout the semester comes back to me as I read the questions so I guess it's a lucky memory thing? Obviously this isn't going to cut it in coming classes so I would also appreciate study skill tips

I’m not a prodigy lol. Never thought that. O.o Do I understand that I’m not in a full way? No. But I never thought I was better than everybody else…
I “study” notes. I look at them. And review them. I’m not a total lazy bum. But I look at notes. And quiz myself on them. And do practice problems. But I don’t feel like I’m really learning any of it.
I didn’t mean to come off as pretentious but I do have a high IQ. It is saving me from my lack of knowledge of how to study: I’m putting in a lot lot lot of time, and getting minimal results. It’s efficiency more than anything. In terms of organization, getting binders together is important, I just can’t seem to keep it in order. That’s just lazyness.

And LOL I do all my HW. That's what is saving my grades

if you are already reading/understanding your notes, quizzing yourself on them and doing sufficient practice problems then you're way ahead of where i was when i graduated hs (and quite frankly i think you might be ahead of the 'current me' as well haha)
so uhh just do that. what's the problem then? if you know how to do the practice problems for each course & get the correct answer, the exams are basically the same thing so you got it in the bag.
now i'm confused.

Being lazy is also kind of about environment. If you're constantly surrounded by peers who are working all the time, it's much easier to find the motivation to become a workaholic yourself. If you spend a lot of time on TL, it's likewise really easy to follow the examples of those around you. Needless to say, having a bunch of pros and semi-pros stream videogames all day does not help with being lazy.

The only way to study better is to find the easiest way for you to learn all the material and assimilate that shit. Like with calc, for most people, the best way to learn how to do calc well is to do every possible practice problem in the universe. I found that for most people I knew just sheer repitition led them to higher grades in that particular class. But it changes depending on alot of things

Just try every way you can think of, everything you can find for study methods. Finds ones you like or work for you. Trial and error the way of life.

With alot of classes you get out what you put in, like really. Unless you're one of those horrible stupid time waster study people who say they study for like 6 hours but really only actively learn for 10 minutes etc.

I probably have the worst method, I'm a crammer. I was just lucky to get a good memory and decent reading speed. So before most tests I just read the book and that almost always leads me to a good grade. That's why i fucking hate classes with papers

But it hurts so much to have to cram all that shit in one night and i hate myself everytime i do it. Despite the fact it works im actively trying to spread my learning time out over several days instead of hours before a test.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.

I find it much easier to retain information when you actively care about the subject. When you're studying, try to find things about the subject that interest you; last year, studying was a breeze for AP government because politics enthrall me. On the other hand, most of APUSH this year has dragged down my GPA because I don't particularly care about early American history. But now that we're past the civil war, I'm doing better in the class as my interests more overlap with the subject.

Make connections while you study, especially with concepts that seem difficult. It will make them stick out prominently in your mind.

I can't really help you with organization tips because... well... we share this shortcoming. =/

I think you should remove the part in bold from the OP
Although I do well on tests in general it’s mostly because I have a high IQ, and not because I prepared particularly well.

so it's changed into
Although I do well on tests in general it’s not because I prepared particularly well.

or topic won't move past 2)
Maybe add what you wrote in comments about what you already do.

The good thing about it is you've just learned to always check how can you be misunderstood when writing OP and rephrase accordingly to avoid that :D
Fuck yeah interwebs lol.

part 4) is probably a material for whole another entry... and I don't get what is there to be ashamed of?

@ 6) is this connected to the C you got or are they again raging in general?
Notice:
1. I bet she didn't get yelled at to get good grades see my next post
2. She doesn't make sense because she doesn't want you to get a job. What's the point in calling you worse when she doesn't want you to even try to compete?
3. Your college future is already set and it looks very good...

No problem
BTW what I mean by "I bet she didn't get yelled at to get good grades" is I bet she didn't have to go through so much... abuse, to simply put it. I of course don't know it but maybe she had it easy at her home because she didn't have to be stressed out because of her parents rage.
And you already wrote how badly your parents rage can set you behind in your work.

edit
Damn I don't know what can be said about those fucktards and about dealing with them that hasn't been said so far. What is the source of rage this time?

Dunno.

Just raped my two finals though, in a figurative sense. Parents somewhat happy.

I made a deal that if I have all As at progress report (1/4 way through semester) they have to lay off.
