So, I like to order pizza. Actually, I order Chinese food more often. But that's not important. I order pizza from Papa Johns.
![[image loading]](http://www.fastfoodcouponscode.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Papajohns-coupons.jpg)
Why Papa Johns, you might ask ?
Well, I have a 'BOGO' deal which lets me "buy one get one free" of anything I want. Also, I have stored a deal which let me get an extra large pizza with unlimited toppings. Somehow, I'm able to glitch the system (usually) in order to get two extra large pizzas, with unlimited toppings, for about $15 (then delivery which is like $2, then tip which I usually give as $2), so about $20 total.
Well, unlimited toppings... What should I choose ? I make choices that most people have questioned:
-Chicken -Mushrooms -Anchovies -Pepperoni
Of course, the biggest problem that people have with this setup is the anchovy. They don't like that it's fish, that it smells funny, looks kind of weird, and seems really salty. Well, what is an anchovy ?
From Wikipedia:
Anchovies are small, green fish with blue reflections due to a silver longitudinal stripe that runs from the base of the caudal fin. They range from 2 centimetres (0.79 in) to 40 centimetres (16 in) in adult length,[2] and the body shape is variable with more slender fish in northern populations. The snout is blunt with tiny, sharp teeth in both jaws. The snout contains a unique rostral organ, believed to be sensory in nature, although its exact function is unknown.[3] The mouth is larger than that of herrings and silversides, two fish anchovies closely resemble in other respects. The anchovy eats plankton and fry (recently-hatched fish).
They seem kinda cute, almost, like an enemy from Super Mario World or something. But they're really tasty! So why don't people like them? Maybe it's the oil:
![[image loading]](http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/knowhow/glossary/anchovy/image.jpg)
Yeah, that's what anchovies look like before they're put on pizza (or often other foods!). Some people immediately get grossed out. Some people don't like fish in general, and I'm sure that has an impact on what they feel about anchovies, but there's definitely something about the can, the oil, and the smell (smells fishy, oily, and strong) that drives people away. I don't really feel that way though; I always enjoy anchovies.
Months ago, the day I was leaving to go to MLG DC, the concierge at the front desk stopped me as I was walking out with my bags. I wondered, "What could he possibly have to ask/tell me ?" Well, as it turns out, the conversation went like this:
"Are you the guy who orders pizzas pretty often... With.. Anchovies?" "Yes, that's probably me." "Why anchovies ? I mean, they just seem.. They're just.. Are they good ?" "I really like them. It's just a pizza topping. You should try it sometime." "I don't know about that."
This type of conversation happens fairly regularly between me, my friends, or friends of my roommate. Often people come over, and see pizza in the refrigerator (two extra large pizzas last a considerable amount of time), and ask if they can have some. I always say, "Yeah, you can have some, ...but it has anchovies."
No one ever wants any. And this blog DOES have an actual story, it's below.
It was a Tuesday night. My roommate and I had planned to go eat sushi with some of our friends but it got cancelled at the last moment. So we went grocery shopping and ordered pizza to arrive for when we got back. When we got home from the WalMart, we got a call from the Papa Johns telling us the pizza would be there in thirty or so minutes, so we played some Mario Kart Wii (both trying to get over 8500 VR, where I used to be). The pizza came eventually, and we went outside to get it. Normally it comes to the door, but this particular time the doorman was away and the delivery woman had to call us to tell us to come outside.
As I signed the receipt for the pizzas, a homeless man approached. I see him out of the corner of my eyes, and, as usual, I completely ignored him. My roommate had already started going back inside. The man continued to approach me. Unlike most homeless, he didn't give me his story. He just immediately got to the point.
"Hi, would you mind buying me something to eat ? I'm real hungry." "Hmm. Do you want a slice of pizza ?" "Really ? You'd give me one ? It's hot, fresh pizza ?" "Yeah, but.. Just one thing." "What's that?" "The pizza has anchovies on it." "Oh, whoa.. Yeah.. I don't really mess wit' that." "You don't want any ?" "Yeah, nah man, it's got those anchovies on it."
I knew it.

LOOOOOOOL he's a homeless dude begging for food and he cares that it has anchovies on it? wow..
|
I've seen homeless men put stranger things than anchovies in their mouths.
|
I'd like to try anchovies, but fuck they're just too loaded with salt. Wayyyyy too loaded. When I worked at Papa John's, I think I had to make an anchovie pizza once, and the salt was all I could smell. :|
Edit: Also, tip your drivers better. Their tips are how they get to eat stuff that isn't cancelled orders of pizza.
|
I really like anchovies with green peppers on pizza. Pizza Hut's chicken supreme is a good combination too; I think it's chicken, green peppers, onions, and mushrooms.
|
PS - Round Table's Chicken & Garlic Gourmet is off the hook, smack-yo-mama good.

Seafood is not supposed to go with cheese. Or tomato sauce.
edit: I don't really like seafood in general. The only seafood I eat on a semi-regular basis is canned tuna fish.
also I don't like to eat small animals. I feel bad knowing a lot of animals had to die just so I could have one meal. A cow could feed me for a year.
|
i've actually never met anyone who doesn't like anchovies as far as i know. Is this weird?

How many dishes can you name that mixes seafood and cheese?

Hahahaha that story with the homeless man is absolutely priceless
|
I used to work for Papa Johns. If you really like anchovies, ask for a side of anchovies, they will give you the entire can [ which is like 8-10 anchovies ] for $1.
I like anchovies [ being korean ] but seldom get them on pizza, and fresh anchovies are ridiculously good with pasta or other Mediterranean dishes.
Edit: You tip like an asshole. The delivery charge is simply to cover food costs. This isn't to say Papa johns is a great company but drivers need money. I was not a driver.
|
Thanks for the insight on tips-- I wasn't really sure how it worked. I'll tip better in the future.
Also, I didn't make Fastest map. I should put that in my signature or something, heh.
|
haha funny story. I hope u guys know that anchovies are in caesar salad dressing...which almost everybody likes....and whoever said that cheese isn't supposed to mix with seafood is dead wrong, lobster mac'n cheese is a very popular dish and one of my favorites.

every time i make ramen, man. tuna n cheese mmmmm. <3 anchovies

It's actually a very common view that seafood doesn't mix well with cheese. You're not going to disprove it by bringing up a tuna melt or a mcdonalds filet o fish or tuna helper.
|
I've never actually had anchovies, or really thought anything about them my entire life. In fact, the last time I heard or read the word anchovy, it was in that Futurama episode, waaay back in Season 1.
My favorite pizza was the buffalo chicken pizza that Pizza Hut sold one summer many years ago. My family had pizza night every Wednesday just for that pizza. They don't sell it anymore

Can you give a description of what anchovies taste like on pizza?
I'd like to try it one day, but if it smells like you say it does, that doesn't sound very appetizing. Smell is a huge part of taste.

Hmmm... That's really hard to describe. Its texture is fairly rough, and it's extremely salty. It's almost like adding salty fish pepperonis on the pizza (but there are way less of them than pepperonis, otherwise it'd be too salty). As far as the smell goes, it's hard to describe. I'd almost say it smells salty, which doesn't inherently make sense, but.. Hmm.
I've always been bad at describing taste. Maybe someone else can do a better job.
|
I like anchovies a lot, and all seafood for the matter. I find on pizza it can go either way, some places make it taste amazing, some not so much. A must for me on pizza is a good hotsauce.
And lol at blackjack making rules of what is and isn't supposed to go with cheese. Who cares? If people find it good, let them eat it.
|
Cheese and seafood is more of an old school culinary faux pas. Most traditional European dishes will feature one or the other but never together. But I agree with Horrde if they like it, it's their decision to eat it.
I enjoy anchovies, but maybe my Vietnamese upbringing helps eating the tasty things. To me the just are small salty fish, but more salty than fishy. Reminds me of fish sauce a little bit..
Blackjack: You say you don't eat small animals, but anchovies are inherently small. So I guess you don't eat shrimp either? You make the comparison sound like beef and veal. But you don't feel bad for that cow that more than likely cooped up in a small quarters in sub-optimal living conditions and treated with hormones and other junk.

I just googled "italian seafood recipes" and "french seafood recipes" and I found over 30 dishes within the first 10 seconds of clicking around that have cheese and seafood in them. And I bet I can find many many more from other cultures'. I also bet I can find even more that have seafood and tomato sauce (were you serious when you said seafood doesn't go with tomato sauce??).
It's fine that you don't like seafood. Going around saying that it's "not supposed" to go with cheese or tomato sauce is just idiotic.
Oh, and were you serious about feeling bad when a lot of small animals die to feed you?

I hate papa johns pizzas, they might be different in America, but here in China they're basically the worst american pizzas you can find.
The end of the story was hilarious, the guy is begging for food and when you offer him some hot pizza he just refuses it because it has anchovies ? rofl. Actually the fact you told him it had anchovies before handing him the slice is even funnier. "I knew it". You were definitely right to ask, as otherwise I totally see you giving him a slice, him taking it with his dirty hands, and saying "oh it got anchovies, take it back".
I use to dislike anchovies when I was a kid. Then I tried raw anchovies (marinated in olive oil and salt, Mediterranean style) and loved it. It's also delicious to get fresh anchovies and BBQ them.

Yeah I couldn't stand Pizza (Papa Johns/Dominoes) when I was in America.. They are all so bland and have mostly very little topping. Completely different from what I was expecting and what I was used to. I always saw America as the place that popularised Pizza so I was expecting the best in the world.
I'd much rather a nice Chicken Club:
![[image loading]](http://www.eagleboys.com.au/Portals/0/Modules/MenuItem/HeroImage78.jpg) + Show Spoiler +Chicken, Bacon, Cheese, Mushroom, Red Onion, Capsicum, Shaved Parmesan, Fresh Parsley, Garlic Aioli Swirl
Or the works:
![[image loading]](http://www.eagleboys.com.au/Portals/0/Modules/MenuItem/HeroImage69.jpg) + Show Spoiler +Steak Strips, Pepperoni, Ham, Mushroom, Feta Cheese, Capsicum, Pineapple, Kalamata Olives, Cheese, Fresh Parsley
Which both give a variety of flavours and end up being reasonably healthy for you. Most of the American Pizzas I had just had too much cheese with some bits of meat swimming in it. If you were lucky you got capsicum or mushrooms.
As for anchovies they are one of the tastiest things in the world. One of my favourite snacks is making myself a bunch of dry buscuits with different toppings, anchovies are always a good choice here.
An example would be: - Take a dry buscuit - Put a little bit of kewpie mayonnaise in the middle. - Wrap a single anchovy around the kewpie - Put a quarter of a Tomato slice on top - Add a little Pepper
But the combinations are unlimited so just go mad

Dude I dislike sea food in general but I would LOVE to try some of that pizza.
Mmmmm
|
My personal favourite topping is Ansjovis, Blue cheese, Green peppers. To good. God I'm hungry now.
|
Nice story. Also everyone thinks im weird because I eat pizza without tomato sauce! thats right and I still love my pizza and people that have tried my pizza (its called Cyprus Lover and its basically a sort of cheese from Cyprus (haloumi), I add bacon, turkey, ham maybe some peperoni) and anyways people that try it say its not much different than their regular tomato sauce pizza's and that they really really like it. lol. btw best pizza that you can eat EVER is at Italy, Rome its in piazza navona and its called Da Baffetto!!! review here: http://www.fodors.com/world/europe/italy/rome/review-38439.html

I love this blog. Everyone's talking about pizza, which makes me happy.

I can't believe how many people dislike anchovies >.> Especially on pizza wth. Even my friends are the same.
Everytime I order pizza I ALWAYS look if they have anchovies to sell. It's salty yea but it's so delicious to me I can't get enough of them when I order pizza with anchovies.
Now this blog made me hungry and I'm going to order pizza (haven't ordered for quite some time) with anchovies when I'm done with work (in 45 minutes).
@OP: I think anchovies are one of the best ingredients there are on pizza. And I agree that if I hang out with friends they also never take anchovies.
If you ever meet me RL and we eat pizza then you better watch out cuz I will eat everything

i love anchovies but i need a lot of water afterwards so salty

I can't actually taste or smell the fishiness of anchovies, they just taste really really salty. I would eat an actual fish pizza, like a smoked salmon pizza or something. But if I want salty meat I would rather get ham.
|
The no seafood with cheese is a mostly Italian rule and its fairly well known if you are even modestly interested in the culinary arts. The idea is that cheese tends to overpower the delicate flavor of fresh seafood. It typically doesn't extend to anchovies though as the anchovies on pizza is cured and canned.
As to Anchovies, I like them in Caesar salads but not so much on pizza as the things I really want to taste on a pizza is the crust, a fresh tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella/burrata mozzarella, and fresh basil.

No, I don't have the statistics you requested. The idea is not my own but repeated from hearing multiple chefs on cooking shows say it so I will leave the debate between you and them.
edit: it's also a rule of traditional italian cuisine not to put cheese on seafood pasta http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/30/magazine/30food-t.html?ex=1364443200&en=23c28225261631a7&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
