Why didn't I notice this before?

My first impression is that it's similar to an iPad, but with wacom. To be honest, this is exactly what I wanted - electronic paper. I mean, iPad is neat and everything, but it really hurt me due to lack of pen input (such as wacom), which is what I really want. This product seems to fill the void of wacom.

I am, however, a bit worried about Windows 7. Something like this (e.g. iPad) is supposed to be able to start instantly; experience tells me that Windows 7 definitely does not start within seconds. With only 3 hours of batter life, this seems like a thin tablet pc without a keyboard, which is very disappointing.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Apparently this is going to be released as early as Jan 25th. Specs are also out.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220961

EDIT2: Apparently it's named Eee Pad instead of Eee Slate... but the specs look the same on newegg and Asus's website so I assume they are the same thing.

i5 processor, wow.
That's super awesome!

I don't personally like tablets or the ipad, but this is pretty nifty. =3

Wow.. I really want one of these. $1000 is pretty cheap for what it is really. Only thing I worry about is what the tablet feels like to draw on. I like my Intous because it feels a lot like paper when you draw on it. If they can capture that feel on the screen then I'm sold.

Pretty awesome that it uses an IPS panel and not TN.

I might wait for a couple of reviews to come out but right now I'm seriously considering it.

Thanks for the link

It's using an SSD. These things boot Windows 7 like lightning. And it comes with a bluetooth keyboard.

The truth is, I have Windows 7 on my desktop with an awesome OCZ SSD, but it still takes about 20 seconds to boot.

I am also worried that this thing may run really, really hot because of how powerful the rig is. I am not very experienced with laptops so I am not sure, though. For example, does it have a fan? It *is* an i7 processor, so it seems to me that it needs some sort of cooling.

I am pretty sure I don't want to buy it if it has a fan.

why didn't they come up with this before the iPad came out is the real question

Bloody retarded to put an i5 in there - not only does it make the device more bulky, its likely to be even hotter and the additional power from the processor is completely useless for people who might use this tablet as a tablet. Also how is the battery life on this thing?

Seems like no one understand the iPad still and everyone is throwing out throw away products intended to cash in on the new market Apple made. The only good thing is the screen, good to see that they're understanding that people want more than cheapass TN screens with god awful resolution.

not all i5s are clocked the same. There are different lines of intel Core i CPUs. The tablet uses an Intel i5 UM which means it has a low clock of 1.33GHz and is an 'ultra low voltage' cpu.

i5 UM isn't low enough for good battery life...its still an incredibly bad idea. Tech sheets suggest "up to three hours of battery life". That's a joke for any portable device.

Everyone wants to get a piece of the tablet market Apple just created but the fact is that this tablet doesn't even compete against the iPad - besides the fact both are "tablet computers", they're two completely different devices (the iPad is a real tablet with a OS designed for it while most other tablets are basically computers or glorified smartphones).

i think a lot of people here are ignoring the implications of the wacom input. this is going to be more of a professional artperson product. It isn't aimed at the same niche as the ipad

Clearly not aimed at the same market as the iPad, not even close. Depending on battery life, I might pick one of these up. The flexibility of a tablet with the power of a reasonable laptop, plus a physical keyboard? Yes please.

my pc with an ssd boots windows 7 maybe twice as fast as any operating system I've ever owned, so yes, SSD makes things ownage!

This looks really interesting I'm interested in the WACOM tekmology

Beat me

This is a great idea, but we'll have to see the execution. Galaxy tab looked great too.

I have no need for an ipad at all, my android phone already does anything it can do better. What I do have a need for is a portable tablet with pressure sensitivity through the wacom pen that is powerful enough to run decent graphics applications. Asus got it right with this tablet.

I'd still like to try it before I buy it though to see how it feels.

yeah, this is a different niche from the ipad entirely. i do hope that they'll get battery life up though, i'd love to be able to use something similar to take notes in class. having electronic copies of notes are just so convenient, but as an engineer, typing out notes usually just doesn't cut it.

Exactly. This is the kind of product I want. However I think I am getting a much bigger package than what I need with that kind of powerful rig.

I really hope they can release a "lite" version with poorer hardware configuration, cheaper, and hopefully with longer battery life.
