I've decided to embark on a journey of self improvement. I'm tired of lacking confidence and having to resort to hopelessly overcompensating with fake confidence.

First thing's first. My body. I've been working out for a good month now so I gained some strength in my lifts, but I also gained a ton of fat. I'm not sure how much muscle I should gain before i start cutting, because I heard you lose muscle when you cut so it's better to be safe than sorry right? Also, I'm seriously considering getting eye surgery to make my eyes look bigger when I get older. I know it'll never happen now because I still live with my parents but I just think I'd look 10 times better with slightly bigger eyes.

In addition, I'm going to acquire numerous skills to make me a more entertaining person in general. I've already got rubik's cube, piano, juggling, and SC or course, on my list of skills to learn. Do you guys have any other suggestions for some other cool skills to learn? Preferably skills that don't take more than a year to learn.

Finally, I'm going to try to make better posts here on TeamLiquid so I can practice my sense of humor and my communications skills. Obviously, this won't do much in helping my face to face interpersonal skills but I already plan on doing that by going to more parties and talking to random people (without the intention of picking them up)

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't be surprised if you don't recognize me in 2012.

lose the stash baby!
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

Good on you. (:

As for skills, just depends on what you're good at.

Go for guitar, piano. Something, if you're willing, that's extremely creative, demands a lot of you, and will require practice. Once you get good at it, it feels better than all the little things you can do, compared to this one big thing.
you are perfect porcelain.

as for other skills, learn a second language similar to English?

I think you should also work towards developing more discipline. If you have more discipline you should be able to maintain motivation when performing activities that seem less enjoyable but are being done for the sake of self betterment. Also consider that most activities such as playing an instrument or practicing an academic subject are at first difficult and burdensome but become enjoyable once you become proficient.

Maybe you should consider adding activities that will better you in a more academic way. I find that the more math, philosophy and conceptually difficult activies I practice, the better I become at interpreting information and developing ideas/opinions.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

Go on youtube. Search up some cool talents and stuff untill you see something that makes you go "I want to learn that!"

Stop caring about your appearance that much. Just make sure you don't look like a thug (lose the stashe). If you keep on worrying about how you look, you aren't going to be that confident

Lastly, do not think about Pickups at all. You're in high school x.x

Didn't you say you were 17? How are the academics going?

I always say to learn skills that have a practical use for the future. That usually means some sort of people skill. I'm always working on my communication because most of us spend a good part of our day talking to people. A big comm tip I always give is to ask questions. It allows you to gain general info, build rapport (good relations, or a connection), and gets the other person talking, trying to impress you with their answers, plus you don't look like an attention grabber. Then you add your input as necessary, or trade the question asking role or whatever. Leads to engaging conversations, helps get you past the small talk phase.

Other skills....hmmm... musical instruments are baller, I can't get enough of them.

And in terms of building confidence, if you practice this 'fake confidence' you speak of, it can lead to real confidence. The basis of clinical hypnosis is that the practitioner is getting the client to pretend who they want to be in hopes that the act will become a reality. So keep faking that confidence, haha.

Good start, always great to see people make an effort on improving themselves. My suggestion is to learn how to dress really well. It's not really an entertainment skill, but it fits well with improving your self image and self confidence. It's something that is pretty easy to learn, you just have to invest a small amount of time in it. Give it a week or so and you'll learn how to dress reasonably well, and it just becomes second nature. It's a great skill in life to have, and takes a lot less work than most people might think. I know almost nothing about fashion, trends, seasonal trends, the industry or anything like that; but I dress really well because I just spent a bit of time to gain the knowledge. And once you're all set, it doesn't take any amount of extra time or effort to dress well. It's just a matter of learning how to put things together.

Yeah that just gave it away right there. I was actually going to believe this wasn't a troll but that just went too far.

For those saying he is trolling, what is his game even. Nothing in his post particularly stirs shit up, flames others, or even elicits an emotional response. How is asking for advice trolling, even if you dont care at all what the people have to say.

As far as what you wrote, yeah you'll invariably lose some muscle when you try to get lean. The body generally breaks down protein (lean mass) before fats, so there isn't alot you can do. That said working out as you try to cut down helps because it still stimulates your body to add mass, thereby reducing the amount of lean mass you lose. Also, the slower you cut the less muscle you'll lose; flipside is that obviously slower cutting means a longer time losing your fat. I wouldn't create an energy deficiet of more than 500-1000 Calories/day (1-2 pounds per weak).

Everyone knows how to play the guitar these days, and almost everyone has some intent on physically honing their body. You need to step it up if you want to be above average. Good goals though, stay motivated and don't lose focus.

Indeed. If this is a troll, it's a boring one who lacks execution.

You are not trying to improve yourself your trying to increase others approval of you. There is a pretty big difference.

Now I understand weight loss and building a good body and so on, that's OK I guess.

But learning 5 or so things so you can seem interesting?
Posting on TL.net so you can improve your humor and communication?

That's a. not normal b. not self improvement c. will make you rather depressed since you'll spend your whole time doing stuff not because you want to but because you want others to like you.

Solution?

A. Sure work out I'm all for losing weight/gaining muscle. Just don't become obsessed.
B. Accept yourself and don't try to determine your worth based on how others view you.
C. Learn stuff you already you enjoy or think you will enjoy. Not stuff you perceive will make you look interesting or good.
D. Go out with friends/watch good stand up comedy or comedy in general to improve communication and humor. Don't post on TL.
E. Be more natural about these things. Don't try to construct some perfect life based on pop culture.

Live for yourself not for cultures approval. Be comfortable in your own existence in all it's fullest. Then from there move out into the world and some will like you, some won't.

I don't often live with any reference to what other people think of me. I'm a Christian, vegetarian, socialistic, guitar playing theology student with aspirations to be a protestant minister. None of this was determined by me because I wanted to please anyone. I tend to get on well with most people but I don't with others. Some may find me interesting some find me rather boring. So what?

Oh and I play starcraft 2, which is pretty geeky but so what?
