So I decided that McDonalds was the best choice to quench my pangs of hunger. I eat pretty healthy most of the time, and the thought of their salty fries and i-don’t-think-it’s-chicken mcnuggets popped out as leaders in the qualifiers of my cheat day.

I walk up to the counter.
“Can I take your order?” the girl behind the counter asks me apathetically. Name tag reads Amanda. This is my chance to pass it on.

Let me pause here briefly to illuminate better who I am. One of my hobbies is meeting people. Another one of my hobbies is to pack as much variance as possible into my every day. Acting on the former causes the latter, and because I value variance and not ‘good’ responses, it never goes wrong. I’ve turned into one of those random fucks that waves and says hello without ever knowing you when we pass each other on the sidewalk. I’m that tool you wish would just shut the fuck up because you have no desire to talk to me as we stand next to each other in the grocery lineup. Fucking booyeah.

So I place my order – with genuine excitement – and notice that there is no one behind me; the line is empty.

“How’s your day today, Amanda?” I beam my smile at her. I have a nice smile: my top two front teeth are larger than the rest, and are too big for my face. My bottom teeth overlap. Whatever, I hear it’s endearing.

She looks at me and frowns momentarily. She considers the question.

“Actually, y’know, it’s been one of those days. My bus was late to the Skytrain. The skytrain kept stopping for 30 seconds right before the actual stop all the way downtown.”

“I know what you mean! Not only did I forget to set my alarm, but as I’m late for work, it seems like every person and their dog is out for a morning saunter. They could at least get in single file or something.”

“Yeah! And then I finally get here and they tell me that I don’t need to work my shift – but I mean, fuck that, if they schedule me they’re paying me.”

“Yeah they are! – I noticed it’s getting dark,” I use my thumb to point behind my head, towards the window. “Your day almost done?”

She looks at her watch and smiles. “Yeah, in a half hour.”

My food arrives. I grab it, wish her night to be immeasurably better than her day, and go on my way. I look back as I’m making my exit and see her helping the next customer. She’s doing so with the smile I passed on to her, and seems genuinely enthused.

How awesome is that?

Now that I think about it, smiles are like file sharing. As you give them out, more people have them, and then they give them out, and the worldly sum total of smiles goes up – without ever giving up your stock.

I am smiling and enjoying myself most of the time – dare I say 95% of it. I make sure the world knows it by sharing it, and it’s pretty cool to see the wake I leave behind.

And that’s my suggestion to you! If you’re in a good mood, don’t keep it to yourself. It’s easy to pass on, all you gotta do is smile.

edit - hohoho! i'm going to add a smile picture so that you may have no choice but to pass it on! bahahahahaha

It probably was. When I used to work in retail, people don't treat you well. To them, you're there to do stuff for them. Being treated with respect once in a while was nice.

I actually make it a point to be polite to people who work in retail. I think having to work a job like that really gives you some perspective.

i hate people.

so i smile at them!

edit - bahaha evil genius!

edit edit - oh my god it's even better than file sharing. With file sharing, you have to go looking for the content. With smile sharing (OMG YES IT RHYMES), the person has to receive the smile whether they want it or not. And sometimes... maybe only just sometimes - but sometimes! - they can't help but be infected! And then they turn into smile sharing centers against their will!!!

People say that I also have a nice smile. I think I'm going to start doing this. Glad I stumbled across this blog tonight.

Just changed the text on my phone when it's locked to make it say "Pass it On". So everytime I pull it out to check the time or make a call, it'll be there to remind me.

holy shit i hate people like you. i mean i find it fantastic that you brighten up other people's days, but every time i run into one of you it just sends me on tilt for an abnormal amount of time.
I've actually considered, and sometimes still do, carrying pictures of dieing african children, and starvation/malaria statistics on my person at all times.

seriously though if you try to make people smile, and they don't go for it just leave them the fuck alone, don't try even harder.

I hate being "that guy", but that's not actually rhyming. It's mostly alliteration, though I would say sibilance is really the most robust descriptor here.

You're lovely regardless, and you made my day.

...and I misspelled sibilance on my first try, so I really shouldn't be talking.

I think what he means is that "smile sharing" rhymes with "file sharing", not that "smile" rhymes with "sharing."

correct.

infact, why would it even be exciting if smile rhymed with sharing?

file sharing to smile sharing though? when they work the same even? BEYOND stellar.

Yeah, I've spent the majority of my life since around 12/13 years old fawning over men with beards, and it took me until this year (I'm 20) to realize: "OMG! I can grow one too! Y'know, cause, like, I'm a dude". (derp) Now I feel like a boss.

In my defense, I couldn't really have grown one until about a year or two ago, and I'm still limited in my bearding options by my half-Japaneseness, but I'm an idiot regardless.

great work Mora. I couldn't help but to pick up your smile when I saw the picture. I love spreading smiles (friends/family/co-workers all agree), but I'm so shy a lot of the time any tips?
