I arrived in Korea a few weeks ago, after living in the US for about ten years. About to finish high school here and stuff. And near the end of January, my family is coming back too. The reason I left early was because of school. Anyways, by that time, my parents are going to get me a phone. I am debating about whether I should get the Galaxy S or iPhone 4.

I was leaning towards the iPhone 4 because it just looked very aesthetically appealing, and the specs of the Galaxy S and iPhone were similar. I read some reviews and they all pretty much had the two tied, so I thought I should just go with the cooler looking one. But then, I saw a video that changed my mind.

It was on youtube, and it showed how the iPhone couldn't play youtube videos straight from the web, while the Galaxy S could. I'm still not sure how the iPhone can watch videos on youtube, if it can at all. iPhone users please enlighten me. I also heard since Galaxy S had flash, it could play games straight from websites and that it was actually pretty comfortable.

I'm still not sold completely on which one to buy, so please Galaxy S and iPhone users, please tell me why I should buy your phone.

Also, for the Galaxy S, I know there are different models, but I'm pretty sure that in Korea, there are only two. One for SKT and KT.

EDIT:
Poll: Which phone?

Galaxy S (48)

73%

iPhone 4 (18)

27%

Your vote: Which phone?

(Vote): Galaxy S
(Vote): iPhone 4

I own the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and I god damn love the thing. That being said I've never had a smart phone prior to owning this one; however my buddy with an iPhone 4 seemed to enjoy toying around with my phone and mentioned that he had to jailbreak his to get some of the functionality that Android comes with standard.

The app market kicks a lot of ass as well, so don't worry about getting juked if you decide to go with the android market over the iphone market. Most major apps can be found on both (mm... doodle jump.... ).

The specs are nice, the screen is superb, although it would be nice to have a front facing camera (some models of the Galaxy S have one, others do not). No flash either but that doesn't really urk me. The only problem I've had is that the GPS can be mediocre at times. I've heard that 2.2 fixes some issues but Rogers (Canadian carrier) has yet to release the update. That being said, if your carrier takes awhile with updates you can always root it and update yourself.

Youtube is obviously nice, though one thing that isn't great is the fact that Vevo doesn't work on the mobile youtube application on android phones. I didn't realize how often I used Vevo for music videos until I started trying to listen to music via youtube (though most have fan-made lyric videos etc as well).

Battery life is fairly good, though it also can get killed quickly if you have a ton of stuff running as well as leaving on wifi/gps/etc. I try to be proactive with terminating unactive applications myself and my battery seems to last a satisfyingly long enough time.

Oh also, I don't know how functional the single button of the iPhone is, but I love having the home/search/back/settings buttons.

Overall: definitely the main thing for me was Android vs iOS/Apple. I ended up deciding to jump aboard the seemingly surging Android boat (never really been an Apple fanboy... ~_~) and I have no regrets other than the fact that I didn't do it sooner!

edit: if you have any questions I can try to answer, though I am a pretty big phone newbie and there is probably 100 things I don't know my phone can do, hahahaha!

I've got Galaxy S and it's really great phone. You are right, the specs are similar, it comes down to OS, prize and design. Android>>>iOS4, it's obviously cheaper and as for me the samsung's design isn't that bad.

But if I was you I would either a) wait for iPhone 5 if you go with iPhone, because iP4 being iP Vista they need to come with something really revolutionary this summer. Or b) wait for dual core android phones which will support android 3.0 if you decide to go with android.

i totally love my galaxy s aswell, but i dont have any greater experience with an iphone to compare with. But the galaxy s is definitelly a good telephone. Its a large phone but it weighs almost only half of the iphone. There is not really any noticable lag in menus or whilst texting. The battery time will last aprox 36ish hours, but turn on bluetooth or gps or something if you want the battery to be drained every 24th hour to charge it during the nights.

Android is cool until you want to download games. Wait what, the only good game I can download is Angry Birds? And its worser than the iPhone version as well?

AppStore is what makes the iPhone amazing, never forget the AppStore.

You're lacking the obligatory poll.

Anyway, everyone I know would take iPhone 4 because of the games, only buy iPhone 4 if you want to play games on your cellphone.

Personally I'd take Galaxy S over iPhone 4. Everyone has an iPhone 4 in here for their games and Galaxy S would add a professional look/feel so to speak.

This is somewhat true for now, but since Android is gaining popularity the market will develop.

I'd go for the samsung as well. I hate touchscreens myself but my gf is happy with her galaxy S, and it seems to be a pretty good phone for its price.

I personally think the games on iPhone (yes, Angry Bird, too) are not very interesting due to the iPhone's somewhat unreliable UI (the touchscreen) and computing power.

If you want to play games, invest in NDS or PSP.

Also I think iPhone should be able to play most youtube video. I am not sure where that came from.

I dont own iPhone4 and i'm using Galaxy S i9000, but i'm using an iPod touch 2nd gen instead (well quite similar though, except no calling functions).. I did used my brother's iPhone4 on a regular basis..

Both are really good though.. Apps from the Apple store really own Android market real hard IMO.. Games are kind of limited in Android market, and once you jailbreak your iPhone4, it will really be an app heaven for you..

Function-wise, both are of equal level.. However, personally i do have something against the Samsung Galaxy S keyboard language problem (only if u use 2 languages or more).. For iPhone4, let's say you are typing something in English, and u have set Korean as a secondary qwerty keyboard, you will have no problem hitting the symbols and going back to English.. But for Galaxy S, the symbols are considered a "language", so literally you will have to shuffle pass the Korean keys when you are transiting from Symbols to English.. iPhone4 even change back to the main language key that you previously typed with..

oh, another thing, galaxy S' speaker is at the back of the phone.. So if you ever place it on the floor or table, it gets covered and the output sound will be muffed away..

Also, I especially wanted to ask those of you that have a galaxy s how the flash support is. Can you watch all youtube videos, and hulu, and veoh, or videos like that? And how are the internet games with flash support?

For iphone users, is there no way to watch youtube straight by browser?

well iphones can watch youtube too
cant comment on hulu/veoh, but you can watch full flash sites like newgrounds.com just fine.
Flash Games shouldnt work usually because those arent designed for Touchscreen.

Very good phone though, I recommend the galaxy s. During GSL I had to go to university when Jinro was playing. Good thing I had my Galaxy S with me so I could watch the games on ustream :p

If I bought a phone now I would probably buy the nexus S or what it's called, also from Samsung since that one has Gingerbread. But Id imagine that ones more expensive. Galaxy S would still be 2nd choice after that.

nope, if you click on the video it opens the youtube app and you watch the vid, then have to go back to the browser.

So i am having the same dilemma that you are having, except i want to buy either the iphone or galaxy s in the US. I am on break right now so chilling at my parents house in korea, and my mom has an iphone, and ive been using it this whole break. its an iphone 3gs and we are using KT.

First of all, the iphone has lackluster/no support for korean typing (no automatic correction i believe) so ive been having a hard time texting with it. I keep making typos and my friends think I became whitewashed and cant speak korean anymore (or maybe that's what i think my friends think) and it is infuriating as shit cuz i don't see the typos until i send it and im like OMGWTFBBQ. I am heavy texter so it wont be a problem if you dont text often. I tried out galaxy's swipe texting and it rox, so +1 galaxy in terms of usability.

in terms of price, galaxy wins hands down, the iphone is priced at around 800k~900k won in korea, no further comment.

I don't know if this is just cuz i have the iphone 3gs, but the battery life sucks. It lasts 1 day with no apps running on medium brightness. If i listen to music or surf the internet the battery life gets drained like a mofo, so i just use it for texting and calling, and it still only lasts me a day. -1 iphone, no idea how the galaxy performs but id imagine it would at least do slightly better than that.

Lastly, if your iphone breaks, you're screwed cuz my mom says there's only 1 store in seoul that fixes your iphone, and i don't think repairment comes cheaply either. I havent looked this up cuz im lazy so take it with a grain of salt btw. However, the galaxy s you can just bring to your nearest samsung store and they fix that shit up right then are there for you at no cost. Ive seen them repair our last phone, which was samsung, so I know firsthand how good their service is. took me <10 minutes for the guy to bust out his soldering gun and screwdrivers and fix that shit up. +1 galaxy s

Overall, i will buy the galaxy s when I go back to the US, and wanted to share some issues ive had to deal with using the iphone for the last month or so in korea.

the biggest reason for me why i wouldnt buy a samsung ever ever again is from experience.

Samsung are usually the first to bring out revelutionary technology that sets a new standard for other companies.

My problem is that like nokia when it comes to smart phones it just seems to me as if they try to fit too much into something too soon and its a great phone while its still new but it starts to become unstable.

I dont know. I may be horribly wrong but 'once bitten, twice shy'

Oh yeah, and the phones are free now man. If you sign the contract thing or whatever, you pay like $40 a month, but you get the phone free. For both Galaxy S and iPhone 4

aah i see how long are you planning on staying in korea? I've been asking my friends about the galaxy and they say that there's a new model coming out called stealth i think? and there's a pretty big hype for it so they told me to wait, but im not patient enough to put up with my shitty LG env-touch for another second, so ill be getting the galaxy S (or the nexus S, havent really looked into that much yet) ASAP

on a side note, i don't like touch phones in general cuz i can't touch type and it really slows down my texting, so i might have put a heavier emphasis on ease of texting than other ppl would

A new LG called Optimus 2x will be the first phone with a dual core. It's gonna be released soon, and only in Korea for the moment. Unless the double cpu uses a lot more battery energy, it could be a good choice !

Otherwise, Samsung Galaxy is a great value !

Galaxy S. KHAN for life, yo.

But aside from brand loyalty, I've got an Android phone and they're brilliant - FAR more open with their app market (ie: no need to jailbreak it just to run certain apps that have been denied by Apple, because Google don't deny apps), along with it getting Flash support on 2.2, which comes as standard on Galaxy S.

I got an iPhone 4 and it is amazing although it is my first smartphone after having a samsung D500 for years :D.

I'd wait for the iPhone 5 though if you want to buy one last I heared they planned on releasing it this summer ( only rumours take it with a grain of salt ). The only disadvantage of the iPhone is that you can't watch vids with Flash but I haven't had any problems with youtube. And like someone said the battery life aint that good but I use my iPhone a lot of internet and use 3G a lot which drains energy real fast and I doubt the galaxy S has a better battery than the iPhone.

I'd really really wait for the Nexus S to come out at this point with it's NFC chip; both the iPhone and Galaxy S aren't that new by industry standards, and you're gonna be waiting a couple more weeks or so to receive your new phone. Also, if you find out that the Stealth V or the 'iPhone 5' will have NFC (very likely), I'd possibly consider those phones as well. Both of these phones are likely going to be announced within the next month or two.

From what I've gathered, Korea only launched its first NFC phone two/three months ago, and I'm suspecting NFC is going to be a huge thing in Korea just like in Japan and other developed Asian countries. I believe SKT already bought out half of Hana's credit card division half a year ago and KT is on the move as well.

I tell you to wait because I understand that mobile tech and culture is much more important in Korea than in the states; if you want a 'new' phone or would like to show off a new phone you really have to look ahead at what's launching soon, instead of picking from phones that have been sitting in the market for a couple months now.

If you're not going to wait for NFC or still plan on buying the iPhone 4 or Galaxy S anyway, then my personal choice would be the Galaxy S for the many reasons already discussed here.

Any sort of apps. Productivity apps, science apps, study apps etc etc. They are all better on the iPhone.

I'm not gonna read posts already made about this, but

Samsung Galaxy S > iPhone 4
Always and forever.

iPhone is increasingly getting worse.

I'll admit, iPhone has better apps and a better way of getting them, but the Galaxy S is easily, a better phone. 100%.

My opinion only. I also think the Galaxy S is far more attractive to look at, and a more attractive design, layout.

Edit: If you want a point of view that only looks at the way things look, how much better they work, and customization of looks and all that jazz, listen to me then. xD!

I don't know anything about specs than what I know myself. I haven't looked up anything. =P

Galaxy S, I have one and it's fantastic

I'm on the internet all the time on my Galaxy S and have WAY more battery life than my mother who has an iphone4 (who is on it even more)

Wait what? Your mother is on the Internet even more than you are, so why is it special that your phone has more battery?

Android is doomed to have worser battery time as long as their multitasking basically is to have everything running 100% instead how it is in iOS.

Any sort of apps. Productivity apps, science apps, study apps etc etc. They are all better on the iPhone.

In the long term, Android phones will have a far larger and more diverse app range, because there's only one range of phones that run on the iOS, yet the Android OS can be licensed to any phone.

Case. Closed.

Seriously though what good are 100000 apps more on the AppStore if the 2 ones you really need are only available for Android / better for Android? If I would have been undecided at some point the TL app would have tipped the scale easily. It's by far the app I am using the most on my SGS.

i really love my nexus, but the fact of the matter is, if you like playing games on your phone, stay away from android, at least for the foreseeable future.
i never appreciated how bad android games are (and how shitty the multi-touch on my nexus in games is.. because it's enabled via software, aka leading to some severe retardation/x-y axis confusion) compared to iphone, until i tried getting a few of the games my friend has on his iphone, and finding out that none of them are available on android. back to shitty angry birds and sliceit for me.

aside from that though, i can't think of a reason to go iphone (especially because the tl android app is so good <3)
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

I'm biased as I'm a big fan of Google and their products, and I have an HTC Incredible. I absolutely love Androids, and will not willingly give one up.

I would recommend against the iPhone purely because Androids are so nice. They continue to get better not only with updates but with the apps that are available.

Androids, IIRC, are taking over the market, which says a lot.

I voted Galaxy S because I really like the OS. I've never had an iPhone before so I can't compare.

On the other hand, iPhone users have a lot more sex than Android users ^_^

Also, I heard about the jailbreaking iphones. I know some already from research, but I want to know from personal experiences. If you jailbreak an iPhone, can you download the apps in apple store for free now? Or can you get those same apps elsewhere for free too? Also, if you jailbreak, can you now download full flash support? I know about frash already, but I heard it's not full flash. Cann you still watch videos with frash? But most importantly, can you download full flash support after jailbreak?

Did you try to play it? Terrible gameplay, much lag. Dumb / non-existant story.

Get an app called task killer. Problem solved (at least for me)

And my phone lasts MUCH longer than what it should compared to my mom's phone is what I was implying.

no.. iPhone doesnt support the full Flash, but the the flash player is supported for android 2.2 and higher (froyo or gingerbread)

Wha?

You can play Youtube videos on the iPhone, it just won't use Flash to do so. You can use both the mobile web site and the Youtube application.

The only requirement is that there is a H264 version of the video. Which is most videos nowadays.

Tazza: who or how did you get the idea that you cannot play videos without the iPhone? Flash is a way to serve video, but its not the only one. Just because something uses Flash on your PC, doesn't means that it needs Flash on mobile. Youtube and Livestream, for example, work fine on an iPhone

The best thing you can do is to make a list of what you want to use on the phone (Youtube, whatever), and then do it on a sample iPhone and Galaxy S. Use them for long enough that you can get a good feel of the device. TL is pretty biased against Apple, so you won't get a pretty fair opinion in here.

My personal recommendation:

If you prefer a better app marketplace, product polish: iPhone
If you prefer tinkering, feature checklist: Galaxy S

Ah, I see.

The iPhone won't play the video embedded in the web site. Instead, it shows the video player on full screen when you tap the placeholder image (it has a Play icon). I juat played the video you linked on my iPhone.

Hulu is streamed via the iPhone app. I just tried veoh and it works the same as YouTube.

This is the trade off: the iPhone won't play content that absolutely needs Flash. on the other hand, more content is becoming Flash free because of the iPhone's momentum. Android has a Flash player, but performance can be hit-and-miss, and has an impact on battery life.

So yeah, try them out, and see how they fit your needs.

All right thanks for the info man. I really appreciate it. I am leaning more towards the iphone 4 now. My uncle has a galaxy s, used it, but wasn't impressed

I went with the Galaxy S simply because it's cheaper and much easier to get around here.
