Well well fellow TL.netizens. This very christmas I won't be able to spend with my family due to the poor preparation of the cities and railroad companies to a winter which is very similar to the last three.
However, this time the timing is so bad that I won't be able to make the trip home to my parents home where the family meets.
So my question to you, since TV is shitty: What to do? I am stuck in this apartment, my friends are all at home with their families (since theirs live in this city). I have Starcraft 2 (EU), World of Warcraft (EU), a TV and the Internet at my disposal. A bunch of books too, currently reading Getting Things Done and Think and Grow Rich.
But I'm fucking bored. Fuck the snow, fuck the city, fuck the companies. This is the first time in my life (Age: 24) I can't spend christmas with the family and it sucks.

You're not alone... you're with us. Your true family.
We love you.

I am a Buddhist and as such do not celebrate Christmas (my family does and they get together on the 26th though). If you want, we can play some SC if you're on the US server :D
Otherwise my advice is to do what I do: get a good book, make a pot of tea, and lay in bed all day in read. Or use a DS or PSP or some video game equivalent of a book (I prefer the book, though).
Forget that it's Christmas and enjoy a quiet day to yourself
Also, it says you're from Germany! If you're there now, take a stroll through the hills! when I used to live in Germany, I walked all over the place, whenever I could. On Christmas day, I'd be willing to bet there wouldn't be a soul around. That would be awesome!
I'm starting to envy you lol

I can't even go out of the house without breaking my neck here. Its snowing, its freezing, and ice is everywhere.

Sit on your porch and throw snowballs at random people who pass by. Make a little bonfire too, and if you have some sausages oder something in your fridge, roast them.

I agree. That's how I'm spending my Christmas Eve here in the US (=

Download, er... obtain legally and watch some amazingly fantastic and riveting shows!
Breaking bad Dexter Battlestar Galactica Boardwalk Empire Firefly Castle
Works for when im bored/alone at least. Sucks to be in your situation, at least make the most of 'alone time'. It doesn't last forever (usually ;P)
|
go and eat EVERYTHING they got in MCdonnalds than you will have to throw a shit all day long so you will be not bored anymore, also you can make a fort in your apartment and be naked for rest of the xmas : ) btw you are not alone we are with you.

Remember that game, MMO or RPG, that you desperately wanted to play, but couldnt more than one hour cuz studys and other stuff, and more than one hour a day was required to feel like you actually achieved something ? go do that now, all day you have the time, make it a marathon

I do that with FFIX like every other year :D

I was in the military, stationed over sea's. I missed 4 christmas's in a row.
Just think the next time you do spend it with them, it will be that much better!
|
It sounds like the perfect time for a 48 hour marathon masturbation session.

Indeed. Team Liquid saves Christmas.

Sorry to read you have to spend your first christmas alone. Stupid weather. Hope you will have a semidecent time anyway, maybe spoil yourself with something really nice
I once spent newyears eve alone. Maybe it is a bit patetic but it made me realize you are never really alone as long as you got Internet.
So for what its worth, I wish you a merry christmas from my corner of the Internet to your corner.

lol guess i'm not the only one then
i bought a cake, a cup of latte and am currently going through 11 episodes of Nikita

Dexter is a solid 56 hours of television atm. Damn good writing and only like 2 seasons have some meh endings.
If not dexter, breaking bad is incredible. I just watched all the walking dead which was kind of interesting but only around 6-7 hours in total.
Besides that play some ladder or something. Of you get too bored break out the SNES and play some megaman X/Chrono Trigger or n64 and play the zelda's for it (both OoT and MM)

The old french one or the new one :/
EDIT: Oh its not really french, that was the movie... damn, my memory
OP : Well if you would be in Vienna right now I would totally invite you over

also make yourself something badass to eat for the next couple of days while watching TV. See what you have in your house and make the best of it. As long as I have ground beef I make some badass spaghetti meatsauce if you want to know the recipe PM me

Get loaded, get on skype and have a family member put a laptop at your spot at the table. Presto!

Stuck at an apartment when your family is home for Xmas? Theres an app for that.
I agree with Hawk here, just Skype your family and attent your family gettogether over the internet. Yea you don't get the pleasure of opening the presents with your own hands, but you can still experience it with your family. Plus you can record it for the future!
|
Where the hell are you living that you can't even get out of your house? :3 It can't be that bad, can it? I would suggest you go and buy some Glühwein or something else you like and make yourself comfortable.
|
Personally, I still wouldn't want to forget it was Christmas. I'd recommend putting on some Christmas music to get in the spirit, and sit down with some hot chocolate and a good book/movie/show/game. And give your family back home a call to wish them a merry Christmas.
And if all else fails,

spend time making some great food
merry christmas

Well well well, I made some Spaghettin Bolgnese as suggested. Well, still sad but no longer hungry. I'm currently in the process of legally obtaining all seasons of Boston Legal, always found it funny when it was on TV. Also I think there was a WWE PPV a couple days back, maybe I can obtain a legal copy of it too.
Apart from that - I got my friend Jameson right next to me ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jameson_Irish_Whiskey ). Some power metal is running to lift my spirits, and I have the internet. God that will be awful days. I cranked the heater up to max though so I can run around in underwear while there is roughly 80 centimeters snow outside.
|
Well , atleast you have family.
|
Crash another family's gathering, that's what I'm doing.
|
Try to skype, or some other video chat, with your family during the Christmas celebrations. At least you'll get to see them and talk with them. Hopefully, they can cheer you up.
|
download teamspeak, get a few games rolling with tl, have a blast. also buy some booze, it should be interesting
|
Don't forget the most important part:
|
I've spent the last 3 christmases or so alone, and this year will be no different - it's no real reason to be sad. Unless you're super religious or whatever, it's just another day, so do whatever you would normally do to entertain yourself.
|
If they made a German version of "Bad(der) Santa" I guarantee you won't be sad if ya watch that.
It sux to be away from family during the holidays, but it's more depressing when you suffer from cabin fever. You feel imprisoned and isolated, I'm sure.
There's several great ideas posted here to lift your spirits, but you can always choose to just feel sad and wallow it for a while. Have a pity party. I love doing that. lol
|
I didn't know there were people who enjoyed seeing family at Christmas. I thought it was a universally loathed experience.
Optionally, if you really hate the idea of being alone you could invade one of your friend's Christmas dinners. Christmas spirit and all, I'm sure you've got at least one friend who'd let you come.
|
If Christmas is just another day for you, why not treat it just like another day? Enjoy the break from work/school/whatever and just follow your normal routine, maybe treat yourself and see a movie or something. Play some games. *shrug*
As far as I'm concerned, Christmas is just another day where most people have an excuse to spend lots of money. I'm not saying that like its a bad thing, but rather, if you miss out on it, consider your wallet heavier.
|
I'm feeling the pain, away from family, first christmas away from them, I have to spend it in Kuwait, but not to bad since i have everyone in the military around me.

I know how you feel. :/
Good luck.

ha know the state ur in right now. been like that for about 5 yrs now, since my parents are off to either australia or vietnam every winter from november to march/april (got relatives there) and most of my siblings( sister in barcelona, brother in passau, another sister is here on and off) are somewhere else as well. im in berlin, whereabout do you live? weather here in berlin is getting shittier by the minute as well, just like the rest of germany. cant even go see a special ladyfriend of mine who lives in hamburg due to the roads all snowed in and all. my friends are usually preoccupied with their respective families, so im left to fend for myself. stacraft 2 gets kinda dull after a series of games. i go jogging, go to mcfit(gym) cook and thats about it i guess:-) so nothign really to cheer u up just to let u know youre not alone with this problem.

Didn't a new WoW expo just come out? Play that until you forget you have a family.
Serious post: Give them a call, chill out, your fam and everyone on TL loves ya. Hit up IRC for some practice partners or something
Better yet: do a good deed and get some exercise. Go shovel snow

All I have is this phone lol. And I'm almost at the data limit so nothing except TL hahaha
