Mafia is fun. Fun enough for Hot_Bid to create "Mafia Day" and invited a few users over for some fun rounds of mafia. Luckily the day was when I was home from break, so I was able to go. It was a rather fun experience and I thought people would want to read how the day went so I decided to blog about it. Sadly, I wasn't able to take any pictures cause I don't have a camera!
So I took the bus up Sunday morning, and after church + meeting up with a friend, I waited in Times Square for Carefree Me, a friend from my school who would be joining me on my visit. While I was waiting I texted MrHoon random things and then called him and talked to him. Carefree Me soon arrived and we figured out which subway we needed to take and went on our way. After a bit, we arrived at our stop. Me being directionally challenged couldn't figure out which direction we needed to go, but thanks to Carefree's iPhone we were saved and we arrived. I called the phone number and they waved hi from the 2nd floor.
They've already started playing mafia by the time we arrived, with TheMango moderating. R1CH, Pokebunny, and orb was sitting on the couch, micronesia and Carnivorous Sheep on the other side, Intrigue, Slog, and Hot_Bid by the window. Carefree and I signed the Guestbook and we joined in the fun.
Intrigue was the doctor the first few times, and he was frigging imba or something, since the mafia didn't get a first night kill about 3 games in a row (for some reason micronesia and hot_bid were very popular first night kill targets). Hot_Bid then argued and established a "if mafia doesnt get a kill on the first night then no voting off on the first night" which was a pretty sound strategy. With 10 people we had 3 mafia one doctor (used to be two but we nerfed the doctor later) and one cop and rest civilians, but mafia rarely won a game to make it matter.
One game Pokebunny was the cop and he got lucky and correctly guessed two mafia the first two rounds. He came out after and told us who the two mafia were. It was going to be an easy game until CSheep also decided to claim he was the cop. What.
Eventually we decided the safest vote would be to go after one of the people Pokebunny said was the Mafia, and took the night. Luckily Pokebunny was targeted by the mafia next, who the doctor also apparently saved. Doctor said he targetted Pokebunny so then we knew. We all raged at CSheep pretty hard after that though.
WaxAngel eventually came with a box of Popeyes. He seemed to like Fried Chicken. He ate his meal, played a few games where he barely talked and then passed out for the next 11 hours or so (woke up for the PL games). He then left in the morning and told me he was getting more popeyes before leaving. What.
A few more games, I moderated a few games, and orb also moderated a few games so Mango could play. Mango is frigging imba, I swear. There was this one game where he correctly guessed who the mafia was within 2 rounds (every game Mango played mafia would try and kill him pretty damn quickly). It was also a game where the mafia took out the cop the first night so it was like what. I thought Mango was the mafia that game cause the mafia didn't target him that game so I thought that was odd. But yeah towns people easily won that game lol.
Mafia didn't win many games, there was a game where mafia outright won cause cop died and by the time I started thinking about what the town should do it was over (cause i only think late game when probabilities are easier to calculate). There was a few games where it came down to 2 civilian one mafia and 50/50 chances. One game involved Micronesia and he was pretty close (he also got like mafia 6 games in a row by that time). the other game involved me as the mafia vs mango and r1ch civilian and i lost that because i claimed doctor at the end and mango was the doctor (DID NOT EXPECT mango to be the doctor cause i thought CSheep was the doctor and he was right next to Mango so i heard it wrong).
Slog was also kinda funny cause he was completely random and he was not trustworthy at all. CSheep was not trusted after the first incident involving him (Pokebunny to micronesia: "Why are you looking for logic in his statements? He's CSheep!" I also expected CSheep to be a bit larger and a bit more awkward but he ended up being a tiny asian boy but yeah.
mnm and her friends came in, and we had one big game (that took a few tries to get going cause the cards were mixed up lol). After that Pokebunny Micronesia and orb left, and we had a few more games and mnm and her friends left.
Smix came a bit later (and signed like the most prominent spot on the guestbook with a heart), and Slog left after. There was a few team SC2 games (random 4 v 4s where I just massed Zerglings if I was zerg and massed carriers if I was protoss and I never got to play Terran). Conversations here and there and Dinner.
After a few games and conversations Smix and CSheep left (CSheep came over and he wasn't done with finals and he actually had finals the next day...), and luckily Hot_Bid said I could stay over so I stayed over. r1ch went to sleep soon too and then later on Carefree and I played some BW games randomly. I played a game against Megalisk and then Carefree played PvZ against Megalisk. Then Hot_Bid played a few games and intrigue played (they were both on my account, and iccup.noone (i think?) was playing them and I think he thought he was playing me though lol). Watching intrigue play was quite amazing since I didn't know how apm that fast would look like. It was also kinda sad/sorrowful and filled with desperation as intrigue tried to defend against Muta harass... but yeah. they both mentioned how hard brood war was. Mango went to sleep soon after.
Speaking of running BW, r1ch's computer was the most intimidating computer I have ever used... I think there was like 3 ssh terminals going and like 20 tabs on chrome/firefox and like 30 tasks on the task bar... I wanted to play BW on it but I got scared of playing BW on it cause I knew win7 randomly crashes with BW and I didn't want to risk it lol.
Hot_Bid went to sleep and intrigue played BW until proleague started and went to sleep soon after Proleague started (I think after the first game). Wax awoke by then though although i went to sleep pretty soon after. I woke up, talked with Wax for a bit, and then Hot_Bid and r1ch woke up and started working on TL stuff. They were pretty busy and hard at work, and so Carefree and I left soon after and grabbed lunch at a place Mango recommended us and went home. But yeah it was a pretty fun day and Carefree was like "yeah the trip to NYC was worth it just for the visit to TLHQ".
It was pretty fun! I should have brought Milkis to the TLHQ though, that is like my only real regret

Wow pretty good writeup/memory... just a correction... Pokebunny was saying that to someone else.
That game where it was down to me (mafia), Hot_Bid, and pokebunny it was close but my inexperience cost us the game! I realized after how I should have played it at the end...
I was however on the winning mafia team also :p

Sounds like fun, should bring food stuffs one day just for the hell of it since I reside in Brooklyn and commute to the city everyday. :D

I think Pokebunny said that multiple times though cause it soon became his catchphrase to work against anything CSheep said... I thought one time he said it to you but yeah.
Micronesia also did super well for it being the first time he played mafia, he was learning strategies along the way. I thought he had the game at the end actually until he started forgetting who the cop checked before the cop died (hotbid and me) so i thought that was a bit suspicious. Also I think he got to be the mafia the most number of times (like 6 games.. .in a row)

Actually I don't see how a newbie at mafia forgetting who checked who would really be suspicious since I was legitimately doing it both when I was mafia AND when I was a regular civilian :p
I had trouble following sometimes... one time I couldn't tell who the other mafia were because I was trying not to make too much sound during the night phase... I guess that's a type of 'compartmentalization' haha.

Mafia is not complicated at all. If you've ever played the custom map 'Phantom', it's essentially very similar. You try to pick up clues on who the phantom/mafia is, and then convince everyone else to kill them off. It's a great social game and has some decent strategic depth to it.

some random comments and thoughts:
Slog was hilarious throughout the games (the most random comments would come out of his mouth), CSheep made things interesting (pretending to be the cop as a civilian), intrigue was a pretty pro doctor with some clutch first round saves, if Micronesia survived past the first two rounds he was usually the mafia, Waxangel has a very fitting icon (snorlax), MnM is too nice/honest to play mafia, Orb did a great job with the TLOpen casting (the ghetto rigged green screen setup by rich and hotbid was pretty resourceful considering it was done last minute), Milkis played sc2 and LIKED IT (he carrier rushed every game), carefree me was super easy to read when he was mafia :D

the 4v4s were amusing, that's for sure, although it just involved me doing nothing but building carriers. it's not as fun as playing bw though =/
man i wish i could remember all the slog gems, my favorite i think was when he claimed to be the doctor for a bit and the convo went something like
mnm: you're the doctor? i don't think you're the doctor
slog: i'm the doctor, you're the nurse.
and mnm ended up being the doctor so yeah lol

Sounds like a fun time! Maybe I should start playing mafia; it seems like a very fun game from what I read.
Hopefully I can visit the TLHQ one day, it seems like an awesome place (Though I feel like I need to be someone who stands out in the community for something). =)

How did you get that many games in? My experience is that a single mafia game takes about 3h. But perhaps that's just the people I was playing with...

whoa, 3 hours. I guess it depends on how many people are in the game, and how long the moderator allows the discussion rounds to go on, but even so, 3 hours seems pretty extreme. I think our games lasted about 30-40 mins on avg?

I think we played a bit more than 10 games and we played till like 7 o clock (so about 5 hours) so about 20~30 minutes per game sounds right :O
think our longest game was the cheep false claiming one cause we spent like 20 minutes on that one round alone lol

I've only ever played mafia on the TL forum so I can't imagine what it would be like irl lol. You guys should come play in the forum some time, it would be funny to watch :D. Anyway I wish I lived near enough to visit the HQ because it sounds like a whole lot of fun.

It is so hard to know what to do in that situation, you want to lynch all liars but sometime it is wrong. Sounds like you all had a blast. I need to move to a mre populated area so I can find people to play this irl.

Fuck I'm missing out on EVERYSINGLE NYC meet-ups. And it's only few minutes away (cross the Hudson River damnit)

Milkis carrier rushing every game screwed me over so much. Having about just as much experience as Milkis at SC2, and having to start out as random races, I could never defend well enough in the early-mid game. I remember there was a time on a map where the fourth player in 4v4 started towards the middle.. with an exposed natural. Then the enemy team decides to attack and I only had zerglings to defend (didn't know how to build spine crawlers.. haha). After a frantic call for help I realized that you and Intrigue were busy expanding while Milkis had nothing to his name except a stargate or two.
As for mafia. haha you called me out so often.. and so early. Also it happens that I was mafia for far too many games (while micronesia was mafia for 6 times in a row, I had up to TEN aces in a row.. including a few rounds where every time we redealt the cards, I simply got another ace. you definitely had a huge sample of my mafia behavior to go by while monitoring the first few rounds.)
Then there was the time when mnm's boyfriend pointed at me and got my lynched. I was actually a townsperson that round, but apparently if I wasn't cop or doctor I wasn't important enough, and all of your hands went up in unison. haha. that was a sad day.
