I've been working my ass off with 11-12 hour days, 13 work days between 1 day weekends, so I'm a bit behind on my Christmas shopping. XD The plan is to get my parents a new desktop PC as the one they are using is pretty bad. It's easily over 10 years old.
I asked a friend of mine what he would suggest for under $700 including a monitor and he recommended either of these:
Dell Inspiron, Intel Dual Core
HP Pavillion, AMD Quad Core
My parents just need something to browse the web, watch videos, etc. Nothing too crazy. They have no need for the printer in the HP package either.
From what I can tell the HP looks generally better but I'm really not up on my PC knowledge these days. Quad Core > Dual Core, 750gb HD > 500gb HD, right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.
Just a note before anyone comments, I'm purposefully browsing Best Buy so I can pick up the computer physically at a store to avoid it not shipping in time for Christmas.
Thanks in advance to any kind souls willing to share some advice!

Have you considered building the computer? You can probably build one with the same specs for way cheaper than BB's price. You don't have to deal with all the annoying bloatware either. If you don't want to do that though, I would go with the HP. It has a better processor, 250 more GB (never hurts), and you never know if your parents want to start printing something lol. My dad used to print a lot of photos randomly haha. Not bad for an extra 40 bucks I would say.

Athlon II x4 630 >>>> E5700 750GB > 500GB The Radeon 4200 is utterly terrible but i still think that it is better than the X4500HD.
Well the HP is better imo.

Actually, building your own PC is only beneficial if its fairly high end. If you're just buying a decently fast computer for parents to check emails, use office programs, and lots of other low powered applications, a prebuilt PC is probably a better buy most of the time.
Personally I'd get the HP since the combination of more hard disk space, a fairly decent printer, and better processor should be useful when they're playing around with home videos and other media stuff (realistically speaking though they probably won't notice the difference between the Athlon II and Pentium).
I am assuming your parents have old computer speakers from their previous desktop, because the HP doesn't come with any.

Get the HP. For $40 more, you get an extra 250GB HDD, a better CPU, a video card, wireless LAN, and a printer. A wireless card alone is gonna cost like $15, and I would pay $25 to have the other upgrades, although they will make only minor improvements.
Everything else is pretty much the same between the HP and Dell.

Aye, definitely the HP over the Dell. It's a little more future-proofed over the Dell as well.

Thanks a ton as always TL, I'll be going with the HP. Happy holidays!

To be completely honest, you're probably better off just saving the $50 and going for the Dell.

I've gone through training to sell intel products and personally have a preference for intel no matter what, but definitely go for the HP.
I normally dislike most HP computers and AMD cores, but yeah, it's a better deal.
If you get the chance, please build a computer! You can do so much better even with a small amount of money. ^___^
