All right, so my high school has beta club, and it is having a raffle for a new laptop. Now, I need a new laptop as my current one can't play sc2. Im in america right now, but im probably going to Korea in about a month, and my parents won't let me go to pc bangs to play starcraft and stuff, because im in high school, and need to go to a good college. But im probably going to a boarding school in Korea, so i will be allowed to bring my laptop there, and if i can get a laptop that can play SC2... then that would be awesome.

Here are the specs for the laptop
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/notebooks/0,39050490,45295356p,00.htm
I know it has 2 gb ram, but i have 3gb on the other laptop, so i can just move the rams around. I'm not worried about the specs much because it has a 5470 ATI and a i3 processor, so no problem playing sc2.

So, here's my question. Should I enter this raffle, and if i do, how much money should I spend on it? Price of one ticket it 3$ and 5$ for 2. I don't think a lot of people entered the raffle, maybe about 150? Also, our house's 8 year old main computer broke down today, so I could give my old one to my mom(my dad has a new laptop anyway). I have to make this decision by the latest, on Monday, because they're having the drawin on Tuesday. Currently, Im thinking about spending 20$ for 8 tickets

20 bucks? No offense, but that isn't going to guarantee you anything. The laptop goes for $449 on the HP site. You should invest 224 bucks to get good odds for the laptop at half price.

I would love to spend that much money, but Im a dirt poor high school student. I only have like 150 dollars right now, and I don't want to spend all of my money, and look like an idiot in school after if I don't win.

And the website said 770$ usd or something like that. Can you give me a link on hp that says its 449$? I have a hard time believing a laptop with a i3 processor, and a ati 5470 will only cost like 450$

Yeah but you look like a genius if you walk away with a 500 dollar laptop for 150.

I think this would be a complete waste of money. Im not even sure this laptop can play sc2 but meh...specs dont say everything interestingly enough. You should save money!

Actually, even if he invested 224 bucks, that would be about 90 tickets, which judging from OP's estimate is still < 1/2 chance. Assuming there are 150 other tickets in the raffle (and I've done my calculations right), spending $74 allows you to have about a 74/449 chance of getting the laptop!

However, I still suggest you either buy a similar laptop or simply enter a couple tickets. In the latter case, though, I would definitely not count on winning.

My parents aren't gonna get me a new computer untill i get into college, and they're not gonna let me buy a new laptop even with my own money even if i got my own job and stuff

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/series/category/notebooks/G42t_series/3/computer_store

I just googled the computer by name and picked the page from the HP site. I don't know if those components are the same or not. The case only gets stronger if it is more expensive :p

too risky to invest a lot of money and have the chance of losing
i'd say $20 is a good amount, maybe even $30

That's just the starting price, the starting components are like Celeron processor, and intel integrated graphics, which sucks. Yeah, I saw that it was good specs for the laptop, and a girl told me they bought the computer for like 1k dollars. So, guys, how much money should I spend on it? And I really can't spend all my cash because Im not telling my parents about this, and if they find out I blew like 100 dollars on this, they're gonna be pissed. But if i only blow off a certain amount that is unnoticeable, and end up winning, its gonna be genius

EDIT: What the hell, I might just go all-in

There are times in life were you just have to take a stand. Let me tell you a true story. Sanyo just came out with a breadmaker that uses whole grain rice and automatically turns it into rice flour. It is revolutionary. 10k units sold out in a day, with no more made until the new year.

My wife wants one. Retail price, 50000 yen

Yesterday I took to Yahoo Auctions with a mission to get the perfect Christmas present. As expected, a handful of speculators had machines up for sale. With 1 hour to go I tapped in 60112 yen as my final bid. I was about to leave the auction to fate and go home, but I reconsidered, and upped my bid to 65112.

This morning I arrived to work triumphant, having outbid everyone by 10 bucks. Victory is sweet. I conquered the odds. My fearless bidding paralyzed others on the internet with fear.

I took a stand.

ROFL, I need to save money, so I'm gonna gamble so I win big. You can just send the money to me, it'll go to better use. Remember that you're paying for a chance, and lady luck enjoys screwing people over (what a bitch, eh?)

Yeah, Im gonna find more about this and I will definitely consider going all-in. I just gotta find if there are enough tickets left because its been going on for like 2 weeks now. Thanks for the anecdote Mani.

Damn, I just found out I only had 80$
And also, Im not entire sure those are the right specs. I looked at the hp site, and it could be intel graphics or ati. When the beta club members gave me the specs sheet, it showed the specs on the cnet.review site, but it didn't have the video card

The math is easy. Take the total cost of laptop divide that by number of raffle tickets sold then divide that by $2.50. If the number is > 1. Then it's positive expected value to buy raffle tickets. If it's less than 1, then it's negative expected value. Be careful though, the more tickets you buy, the lower your EV gets. You should also be mindful of other people buying tickets before tuesday too.

All right, lets say worst case scenario that the laptop is using Intel HD Graphics. Will this be able to run Starcraft 2, with a core i3 on low? And what would the fraps be? I tried searching for this online, but couldn't find any benchmarks for the Intel HD Graphics card

According to this trustworthy site, the answer is no unless you consider ~20 fps playable (they tested an i7 and got ~30 fps on low), while the ATI card can top 100 fps on low easily. You should probably ask them about it.

I asked like 3 people about it, but they told me they have no idea. Im gonna go up to one of the teachers that works in beta club and ask them about it.

I know you won the item, and that's a good thing, but didn't you just spend like 15112yen more than the retail price? But, you are right. Sometimes, you just have to go for it. If you've got that chance then go for it. You might as well get a job anyways. If you have to wait, then you have to wait. Patience is a virtue. Plus you might find something else you want to do that will occupy you until you get it. That happens to me a lot.

Yep, I did. I paid 30% more than what every other person will pay when they go to the store. And for that 30% extra I have purchased the moment that my wife opens the gift, the light that will glow in her eyes, the smile that will cross her face, and the Christmas sex tender embrace you get as a husband when you pull off an awesome gift.

Tazza, why would your parents be upset if you got a job and worked hard for something you really want? It is the holiday season and there are temp jobs galore. Work for 6 weeks and buy your laptop. There is more to life than learning math. The ability to earn, save, and make savvy purchases (not like my auction thing don't do that) is as important. I would be more pissed off at my kid trying to stealth gamble on a comp than if he just worked for it.

yeah good story reminds me of buying a wii on launch day, we spent more than MSRP for a console that was in Japanese (we were in Taiwan) but my wife was able to play wii sports and happily tell her coworkers about it for a few weeks while everyone was wondering what it was like

OP - do you feel lucky? I usually don't, so I never bother with these things

I bought 40 dollars worth of tickets, which got me 16 tickets. I was gonna do all 80 dollars, but then i remembered i needed to get my sister something for christmas. When I looked on my computer at a mouse(Deathadder), she told me she would buy me one for Christmas, and I was just so... amazed she would do something so nice for me, so i told her i would buy the new harry potter dvd when it came out, along with 2 other dvds
