What an epic series. I think it will go down as one of the greatest series of starcraft of ALL TIME. First off the obvious backstory: (SPOILERS)
Nestea aka ZergBong: Pretty much a joke in sc1 progaming. He never was a bonjwa. He never any did anything in any starleague, or even came close. His overall record of 11-21 professionally is pretty embarrasing, and ironically enough, his ZvT is the worst at 22%(4-14). He did ok in the 2v2, as in he could make a 9pool with a p teammate and start fipping coins. But once kespa(i assume) found out how bland and boring sc1 2v2 is they scrapped it, and we saw ZB less and less
... Then sc2 comes out...
With his mediocre GSL1 performance aside, we can say he was on the brink of immortality. Wow, hold up there ZTR, thats a bit much. I'll feed you baby birds.
Being a big sports fan and an recent esport fan, I find alot of conclusions and similarities. The 72 Dolphins(NFL) went a perfect season of 14-0, and 3-0 in the playoffs. Something historic and near impossible to reach. The Patriots of a few years ago came VERY close, but only to be upset by the underdog Giants. The hype for this game was tremendous. And I think that Nestea's potential acheivement of being purely undefeated in the GSL wasn't hyped enough(at least here in the foreign scene). This momumental accomplishment was inches from his grasp, and while he still won in exciting fashion. That elusive "perfect" season is still something the GSL has yet to produce.
Next up! Foxer/Boxer/Neoboxer
While I don't have as much of a history with this player, there is no doubt a story here to. A kid mocked by many in the ro64 of stealing the Emperor's name, no one gave this kid a chance. Each round he was an underdog and was near criticized about his marine heavy usage, until we saw his micro. And while TL.net and other sites have threads ever day with players and their specific builds they claim to revolutionize a matchup, boxer truly showed us how to revolutionize a game. Not with some creative mindful build order, or some trickier, but by pure control. Something this game has really yet to see(yeah tlo's hellions were cool, but he got busted early).
THE FINALS!!!!
The first issue I have with this is all the complaints scene on forums about how "stale" the series might have been, or how they proved how "dumb" tvz is now. Which is ironic considering how last seasons tvz was a complete flip. Heavy macro, very passive from both players, almost like a NR20 min. TL hit the shit. Everyone and their puppy complained that they games were generally lacking in excitement. When the GSL2 finals roll along we get the aggressive styles for both players with minimal emphasis on being passive. Now TL is saying that the matchup is impossible to macro up, boring, etc. But onto the content...
Foxer takes a quick 2-0 lead, handing Nesteas first two loses in SC2 in almost a month. Already shattering the perfect season dream and tossing a wrench in the psyche of a sc1 progamer in clearly the most important series of his life. If he falls down and loses 0-4 he will be known as not nestea, but Zergbong, that joke from sc1 that fluked his way to the finals then got stomped on. After some back and forth(trying to shorten this blog) nestea fights back 2-2 and eventually we get to a 3-3 dream game 7.
The entire series Nestea was trying to play his hatch first game. Trying to turn into macro zerg. Many times Boxer said, "O hell no" and tossed marines+micro at him. In just the very first game, this was the premiere case. 2 rax scv marine all in. The last game was very similar to the first, but Nestea evolved in just 7 games to learn exactly what he needed to do to beat this strategy, counter drone+ling micro. He did a beautiful job keeping his cool and executing, knowing that the very similar style broke him the first game, and almost many other games.
Then Nestea wins. Proving he does have the RTS skills to be a bonjwa. Proving he wasnt just a 2v2 joke. Proving that zergs can and will hold their ground vt. Proving that a 29 year old can steal beat the young guns.
Here's to you Zergbong, or shall I say, Nestea.

i hope you mean starcraft 2 series right? RIGHT?

This series was centered upon NesTea's attempt to reach late macro game, Foxer's attempt to stop NesTea from being able to reach the late game at all cost and NesTea's response to early aggression.
The entire series was very tense, perhaps the only regret is that there was no late stage macro game. The 2nd game was the closest to that.

It was pretty awesome getting to a game 7 but i dont know if it was one of the best. certaintly more exicting than the last few jaedongs vs flash where its a jaedong ownage or flash ownage.

Good thing Sc2 hasn't withered away people's standards of a good series...

TBH, I rate that whole series 6/10. Hopefully, I'm not being too generous

OSL final between Flash and Jeadong was damn good. I was on the verge of seat all time.
Game 1: burrow ling trap Game 2: double cheese into super tense game Game 3: another 4 pool Game 4: 5 rax into super tense game
I mean what more can you ask for.
Also Nate MSL could have been a great final if not for the stupid power outage.

2v2 in bw was so awesome it just needed good maps, gaz heavy like Hannibal
Reach/Yellow, Reach/ZergBong, Foru/Clon <3

this entire post makes my brain hurt. Firstly, you fail to see that Zergbong didnt actually get a thousand times better, its just much harder to be a SCBW pro, and a paragraph long rant about how "awful" zergbong was isnt the best way to start a post. And your overuse of the word Bonjwa tells me that you dont really understand its full implications. Bonjwas dont just win one tournament, they win EVERY tournament. Nextly, micro isnt a fucking revolutionary idea, its been happening for a while now. Just because Foxer is really good at micro doesnt mean he fundamentally changed anything about the game. (in terms of playstyle) In conclusion, FFS stop using Zergbong like an insulting name and stop saying Bonjwa every fifth word, and this is FAR from the greatest series of all time.

That was a horrible set. Well, I mean, if you enjoy watching Flash win, you should have enjoyed this. Actually, even Flash/T fans should be disappointed on how unexciting the games were

Way too early to be saying 'bonjwa'
Come back after a couple of years
But I do have to say NesTea was pretty crazy in this season.... No losses until the final? WTF

Yeah EllenPage is pretty cool but I still think stealing BoxeRs nick makes him an asshole.

I don't know what you mean by unexciting when every single game had super exciting moments. They maybe weren't the longest games but for sure they had really exciting moments. Like Flash dancing with his m'n'm just barely off the borrowed lings. Virtually everyone who was watching the game was like 'holy shit, will this trap work or not?' Now according to my definition that was exciting.
And why even Flash fans should be disappointed?

I fail to see where I keep saying bonjwa every other sentence. I think I was pretty clear in what I said, but I'll clear it up even more for our special viewers
Nestea, was NOT very good in BW. So far he has really impressed alot of ppl in sc2. Not ever losing a game until the final I think is underplayed in how amazing that is.
Does he have the skills to win multiple tournaments and be the first SC2 dominant "bonjwa?" Maybe, I think his decision making skills and flexibility are amazing and give him a good chance. The only way to way to tell is to wait untill GSL3 and other large tournaments.
Whether you agree with me or not, I think we can agree that SC2 has an exciting future with the play from the last few rounds of the GSL2.

I kind of agree with you on that one, I wonder what BW 2v2 would look like with shard bases. Were there any games/maps played like that?
I mainly think the lack of variety in sc1 2v2 is credited to that inability to tech since the threat of a 2v1 was too strong.

Your writeup is pretty good but I think you seriously underestimate what the term bonjwa entails. Nestea will never be that good.
|
Thought it was pretty lackluster personally. I didn't expect it to be better than that because of the players and stakes involved, but I watched with a group of people who don't really play a ton or at a high level and for them I don't think the series was that intriguing. People were pretty hype but as the games went on and the time between matches was often upwards of 10 minutes everyone was just waiting for it to end for closure.
Strategically I thought there were some interesting aspects but the player styles just didn't seem to match up to create good games.

The nice thing about blogs is that I can ban people. I am open to mature debate, but not immature swearing.
