I've noticed that there are quite a few experienced DJ's on TL and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to help me with this little problem .
So I've been taking this Music technology class at my high school for 2 years now. The first year we really focused on the production side, live recording, mic setup etc. Now we've moved into making music using garageband, digital performer and midi keyboards, and I'm having a blast.
I've been wanting to get some kind of setup to use at my house, as a 49 minute class period really isn't all that much time to get much work done. Time flies when your having fun, as they say.
Anyways, I've managed to acquire a copy of ACID pro, as I heard it was very similar to garageband, but the problem is getting a keyboard! I have virtually no money at the moment, but I remembered in garageband they had a feature called 'Musical Typing' that allowed you to input MIDI without an external device, and was disappointed to learn that there wasn't anything similar in acid.
I've tried searching google, but all that came up was several cheap flash programs etc. which really wasn't at all what I was looking for, so I was wondering, does anyone know of any similar programs that would allow me to input in a similar style?

I know that reaper (daw) comes with a midi keyboard, reaper is a great daw, cheep if you actually want to buy it.
Don't know much about ACID, but a midi keyboard is a pretty important piece of equipment. You might be able to scrounge up a cheap secondhand keyboard somewhere

Yeah, if you are serious at all about electronic music, a keyboard is a must.

Get the free 30-day demo of Fruity Loops 9. It's a great starter application for electronic musicians. It has all the basic plugins, tools, and samples you'd need to get going on a project.

Yeah, i know how important a keyboard is. Problem is, i don't have a job anymore and my rents aren't into spending on me that much ("GET A JOB!") XD. Its looking to be christmas at the earliest at this point, and I'd really like to have something even just to mess around with in the mean time.

Reaper then! http://www.reaper.fm/ It comes with a 30 day free trail (afterwards you can still use it, it just nags you) It's pretty powerful, and I find the interface pretty intuitive.
As for good synths, I would recommending playing around with Oatmeal, maybe downloading a few banks.
It should be fairly easy to use, and it comes with a virtual midi keyboard.

are there any instruments/plugins/etc prepacked with reaper?
going to second the fruityloops recommendation just because it comes with a lot of stuff in the package so you can start making beats right away.

i cant get over the name of that company

just torrent FL Studio or Ableton Live full versions. idk if you're anti-pirating or something.. but yeah. these are the programs the professionals use
|
Ableton Live FTW!!! I regularly use Pro Tools(only because the studios i work in have it), Logic, Reason, but I keep coming back to Live for making electronic music (glitch-hop mostly nowadays) and it's fucking beastly. Also great for djing if you like to prepare things ahead of time, otherwise if you want to dj oldschool i'd get some technics lol.

I would like to add that if you're on a mac, Logic does have some really great synths bundled.... BUT I much prefer 3rd party vsti's anyway.

I use ableton for production, you can input midi using a PC keyboard (as with most DAWs - logic, fruity loops, cubase..) but you can literally get a MIDI Keyboard for £30/$45.. all you need is a basic 49 key and you're all set!
Depending on what VSTs you want to use, a lot of people in music forums tend to buy one license between like 10 people, cutting the cost considerably.
edit - if you're on a mac and are serious about production, get logic, as garageband just isn't versatile enough
