Heres the story TL... I was training in my dorm room for my CSL match tomorrow, door slightly open, and this girl who I'm close friends with comes in and starts watching. Now, mind you, this is the first time I've ever had a girl besides my mom watching me play SC:BW or SC2... I was more than a little nervous.. Anyways, after I won the game, I was waiting for the inevitable "wow you must put a lot of time into video games" (she is a pretty dancer for the university, I'm used to it by now..) However, instead she exclaimed "wow! thats so cool! can you teach me how to play?!" I was really awestruck, I'm so used to posh people looking down on video game as a silly hobby..
Anyways, I asked her if she had any experience with games, and she responded with "I've played mario a few times, and that game with the little green dinosaur (eventually i realized she meant yoshi, lol)." How do you teach someone with so minimal experience with even a keyboard/mouse to play the most competitive game ever? She is very very smart and studious, so I know she can do it if she puts her mind to it, but I don't want to burn her out with SC2's complexity right off the bat. But I also want to stay on the PC to get her used to using the keyboard and mouse, what do you think TL? Maybe diablo?

|
I'd hate teaching SC2 to a complete newbie.
I got my gf started on a counter-strike clone. Just told her what the controls are, and basics of how to adjust for recoil, and 3 months later she's as good as the average guy.
|
She likes you. Don't turn this into another fail girl blog. Have fun "teaching" her the basics of mining, making buildings, making units, but don't mention micro, macro, build orders, etc. Take this as an opportunity to flirt, and make a move at some point.
|
I would maybe start her off on the campaign mode. The cinematics and storyline might help her hold her interest a little better until she starts to understand the depth of the game. Maybe some custom maps. That's what drew me into BW initially.
|
I'm sure the awesome b.net 2.0 tutorial can do an awesome job...after all b.net 2.0 gotta have at least one useful feature..right?

Teach her how to play...
do not try to teach her how to be very good
|
The hardest part is not intimidating her with it. Just go over the basics, resource gathering, and producing units, using hot keys and take it slow.
Honestly I doubt she is going to commit to it, this has nothing to do with gender, just that SC is a lot more complex and requires more work then people realize, but its a good chance to flirt
|
Okay, forget what I said earlier, as well as what Ronald_McD, The6357, travis, and NukeTheBunnys said.
NevilleS has it right.
|
get her to silver league level and then stop, because anything past that requires them to get better through their own motivation. if she asks for help even past that because she isnt satisfied with her skill level then sure go ahead and keep teaching, but not otherwise.
and yes she is interested in you. depends on you how you want to take it.
|
he's probably aaron neville given the love wisdom
|
Just get her to play the beginning of the campaign while sitting beside you or something so you can answer any questions if she has any.
Or since she has played mario a 'few' times, get her an emulator and play through yoshi's island and get her coordination and reflexes up to at least a semi-acceptable level
|
Show her all the basic stuff :
1. NaDa FPVOD 2. TLPD 3. Klazart 200 WPM commentary 4. FBH ceremonys 5. ICCUP Korean hours.
And she might understand that due to her Mario gaming background.
|
Or you could try telling her to put her hand between yours and the mouse, so she can gain some "muscle memory" for playing. Extra points if you can do it with both hands at once, or convince her to tape her fingers to yours.
|
haha yeah, i told her to go ladder on iccup at 3am central, should get her on the right track.

There is no such thing is casual gaming in the starcraft world
Seriously I'd watch some commentary/replay while explaining the game basis. She will understand that you have to build an army as strong as your opponent or he will attack you. Also that you have to gather more ressource as the game goes on....
I would also show her the game commands (attack, move, build) without using the keyboard, she wont bother using ctrl or hotkeys at the beginning.
|
Stop and think about it for just a second.
Do you really believe she wants to learn to play starcraft, when the last game she played was ... mario?

NevilleS, right on the money

Dude. She went and found TL after she saw you post the OP, just to post this.
Are there enough hints yet?

I love it when girls say that they like your hobbies only to hit on you
as much as possible, make her play the campaign first so she will learn the basics and get into the vibe of the story. Much better that she can have fun with it first then show reach and bisu once she turns gets really into the game.

Dude I'm so totally jealous.

This happened to me back in 2009. I blew my shot after I started raging at her inability to beat the fucking computer, after I showed her some super simple build orders that can't lose to the computer. She spent all her time scrolling around and right clicking into the opponent's base. Only without macro. At that point I just gave up on her and never spoke to her again.
Edit: On a side note, she was still able to beat my friend, who claimed to be good at Terran. I rofl'ed.

I love teamliquid.
Guy 1 - "So this girl saw me playing starcraft and said it looks cool."
Guy 2,3,4,5,6 - "Dude, it's obvious she wants to bone you so hard."
What?

get her to take notes
1. workers mine minerals which is money 2. they take 8 minerals each trip 3. you need 2.5 workers per mineral patch for saturation 4. workers cost 1 supply 5. supply is how many units you can build 5. you can have up to 200 supply 6. you need supply depots to increase your supply ..........
|
Just teach her how to have fun with it. The title kinda makes it seem like you are teaching an animal how to do a trick to put on youtube. And does your mom really watch you play starcraft?
|
I believe the majority of posters have it right. Start with easy campaign tutorial, this was designed by blizzard to ease COMPLETELY new players into the game (such as your lady friend). You are there to function in the capacity of an additional resource and to make it more fun/interesting!
Some missed on a few crucial points IMO:
- She has already shown interest, don't need to show her progamers, day 9, etc. Save this for when interest decreases - If she tries it and doesn't like it, let it go; don't force the issue. Its likely that you have other things to base your friendship in. - Don't expect her to want to do this everytime you hang out, clearly gaming is a small diversion for her, rather than a passion.
- If she plays farmville or other similar game, use the concepts she knows from these games to apply to this game. Make the game relate to things she knows to generate interest
|
Once she knows some basics, just play team games with her and chat on skype or something during the game. Talk about the game from time to time, but mostly just chat about random shit. glhf

Just don't forget to tell her about meta-game, whatever that suppose to mean.

Show her campaign and get her used to the controls, and then play customs and 2v2's with her! :D 2v2's will inevitably be a lot of fun, but you might have to carry the team at first.

Also, I'm going to dinner right now. Which is social because there will be a lot of people around, none of whom I will talk to <3.

Since she enjoyed watching you play, you can always invite her to watch the next GSL (only when tastosis gets back.... don't do it with the subpar casters) or maybe some HD/Husky VODS, eventually you can work up to the day9 dailies.
|
Refer her to a friend you have who plays sc and have them teach her. That way you can do the right thing and focus on your own gameplay.

When you said "friend" I assumed that the friend is named Neeka, and by "them" I assume that you meant TL?

I'd like to add a suggestion that you run your fingers through her hair with your left hand, starting during the mid game. Play this right and you could be making out by "gg."

Lol, settle down. it's impossible to know whether sure wants to "bone" him, but it is obvious that she likes him some what and wants to hang out. I was just advising him to not run a good opportunity to talk to a girl (omg right) by going all hardcore "i will show you the way to be awesome" on her. She wants to have fun, so the "best way" to teach her is to just hang out, have fun, don't take anything seriously... Honestly all this "show her the campaign or commentaries" stuff is so wrong...

Heh all I asked was how to teach her to play, campaign is actually a pretty good idea. She actually wants to learn how to play, its not just about hanging out. she is just a total newbie.
|
I like how people are saying start her out with the campaign, then 2v2s, then move on to Day 9 Dailies. It's unlikely she will ever want to watch Day 9. Sorry Day 9, but you even know you have single digit female viewers (if any). But it seems like you're getting her addicted to a drug with all different stages of using. It is amusing.
|
Tell her you need to show her the meta-game, but the meta game is in your pants. As she unzips your pants, yell out, "EEEEEE HAAAAAN TIMMMMINGGG," grab her head quickly because she'll try to escape, then get her to mine ur mineral like you showed her b4 on the computer.
Otherwise, listen to the advice below:

Just lure her into your room "for practicing SC2" and then throw a joe move like "how u doin".
|
Girl and game always receive special treatment on TL :D I've taught some complete newbie guy to play SC, so from my experience let them start with the campaign is the best way. Then you fill her in with the SC2 communities, tourneys and stuff to keep her interest...and yeah, those "fill in“ can be done in various places and times w/o even the computer involved :D Hey, if she really likes you, buy her a copy and happy 2v2, that would be very cool

I gotta say, this is one of the better girl threads in the blog section.

take her on a date and just make her forgot about video games

LOL this thread is gold.

Ask her if you can practice your "APM" on her.
In a different note, be as basic as possible. I was playing in high school, and these two pretty cute girls got fairly excited about trying it. They had difficulty controlling the 4 workers. -_- But they were excited about it, so... I guess that counts for something?
Start with the basics, economy, and army. If she seems more and more interested, feel free to delve into the progaming scene and such. If she's a little hesitant keep it at a newbie/casual level. Good luck! Maybe you can get a "Tossgirl" esque practice partner? o.o
|
Campaign Campaign Campaign. Make her play on Easy or Normal, get her to try out the first couple of units. The first two missions of SCII will be enough to teach her the basics. Also, micro into her pants while doing so.
|
tbh she doesn't really wanna learn to play, she just wants an excuse to spend time with you. Eventually you will hook up, maybe become bf and gf. After you've been going out for a while she will grow tired of your "always being on that damned computer". Then you will calmly state in a gentle voice, "tits or gtfo", and she will leave you. But the memories are still there, she can't take that away from you. Sure the sex was good and the times were fun, but she is gone forever now and all you have left are the memories.

Play zerg and then intentionally lose your queen early game.
When she says "oh no you lost your queen!",
Take your hands off your keyboard and mouse, look her in the eyes, and reply, "The only queen I need is you."
That's all I got. and don't forget to say gg to your opponent.

Win.
As a sidenote....there has been some very bad advice in this thread. NevilleS basically gave you the best advice....
Learning about Micro/Macro and all of that gaming lexicon is honestly very boring for lots of early players. Make her do the campaign and have her get used to the storyline. The storyline's intriguing enough to hold anybody attention I think....
|
My gosh this thread is incredible. But take travis's advice. Don't teach her to be really pro. Tell her the basics that workers get money, buildings make units (pick Terran, it actually IS the simplest to pick up :3 ) and units kill the opponent. After that, just take the Day9 advice: always be making workers and try to keep the money below 500.
But of course, when she's struggling just put your hand over hers on the mouse and guide her a bit And when she does well just congratulate her by giving her a friendly hug and such. This should be half about teaching her, half about other..

Teach her how to play.... but maybe less starcraft and more "other things" *wink wink.
lol, on a more serious note, I don't think she is really into "starcraft" per say. I think she is into you and that shiny looking game. And if it turns out she actually is into starcraft, you need to marry that girl. Have fun and good luck to you!
|
I'm actually having this same problem except the girl im teaching played Age of Empires so its a lot easier. best of luck!
|
Tell her to take the seat. Watch her fail a bit - then direct her. Now break the touch barrier by moving the mouse and stuff - when she says she doesn't know what to do. Now you can see if shes interested (and she sees that you are interested).
OR/
Do the OJ Simpson method that was ever so kindly outlined by brood a couple of girl guides back.
|
Couple of fantastic calls in here, laughed out loud literally.
Imho, we all want a girl who plays starcraft, so GO FOR THE DOUBLE!!!! Be flirty while teaching her. If you sense she's not really paying attention, then maybe she was just after you the whole time, then you can give it up and fall back to standard operating procedures, watch some movies, get cuddling etc.
The other .001% chance is she got hit by lightning for no apparent reason suddenly wants to become gosu at sc2. She saw you pwning it up, and is using you to teach her the ways of the mouse and keyboard. In this case, may as well anyway, and you can work on her in the meantime.
The double! Do it for all of us!

I'm surprised more girls don't want to learn to play after watching me play like a baller. Basically, after I won while she was watching, I stood up in my armani pea coat, chestnut hair flowing in the wind from my fan, and I gallantly said to her "Yeah. Terran early aggression has nothing on my 14 hatch double expand build babe." True story of course.
