Ok I been having an issue that's been really pissing me off lately. I bought a TI-89 calculator for 150$ for school at Office Max and when I tried opening the lid it will not come off. I was scared I might damage the calculator had I tried pulling it any harder so I finally got a mechanical pencil and was able to pry it open but the tip of my mechanical pencil broke off.
Knowing that this was not going to work, I immeidately went back to the store the next day to ask for an exchange. They told me they were out of TI-89's at the time and told me to come back tuesday which i was fine with. Between this time I took my test which I needed the TI-89 for and the lid was really bothering me so this guy helped loosen it where I was able to get it open easily.
But I still wanted an exchange just in case something might happen in the future. So I took it to the store and the manager denied my exchange because the lid was working fine(since the guy loosened it earlier). I was upset about this for awhile till i finally said fuk it I'll keep it. Then when I try opening the lid, it doesn't open. So I take it back to the store yet again, and a random employee(not the manager) shows me that I need to "slide" the lid to get it open and tells me he can't do an exchange cuz the manager turned me down alrdy and that i need to speak to him again directly. So I plan to go to the store tomorrow to meet with the manager again.
So I take it back home and i try sliding it and and pulling it off and it works sometimes and sometimes it don't and currently it is locked and I can't get it open without excessive force. I called my mom and she told them to look them directly in the eye with a seroius face and threaten to sue them but I asked around and ppl told me i need a good lawyer or soemthing which I can't afford. I don't really know too much about this..
Not being able to easily open and close the lid is a seoirus issue because
1) if it isn't closed then when the calculator rolls around in my bag it turns on and since its rolling around in the bag, buttons get pressed and it messes up the calculator.
2) wastes batteries
I'm sorry i didn't organize this better with perfect grammaer and punctuation i have lots of homework and just wanted to hear from TL before i go back to the store tomorrow.
Also, on a side note, my TI-84 lid slides PERFECTLY and easily and i have no issues with it.
It 's important i get a good calculator now because I'm gonna be using it alot in many of my classes.
So TL what do i do..I mean it's a 150$ calculator...if it wwas something like a cheap notebook or binder i wouldnt care but there has to be something i can do. Any seroius suggestions would be appreciated, like i said im gonna go back tomrrow and try opening the lid in front of them. This will be my fifth time going back for this same issue.

...but really, are you 100% sure you're opening it correctly? I mean, you describe the employee having to show you how to slide the lid off. Here, have a helpful how-to video.
This is really not a big deal at all. Put the calculator in on of your backpack's pocket or something, buttons won't get randomly pressed unless you fill the backpack with rocks and shake it. Keep going back until it's completely clear they won't fix it anymore or this gets resolved, but tbh you probably broke it trying to open it the wrong way.

Just tried it. It opened once but I can't re-open it..I'm about to get blisters on my hands form trying this so much.

seriously, exchanging for a new one will just get you one with a newly tightened cover. they're supposed to be like that. it shouldnt take a lot of brute strength to get it open, theres a slock that you have to slide past by pushing the cover.

There's no way. I had JUST bought the calculator and I immeidately went back the next day and they tried opening it the same way I tried and it was hard for them too. It's alittle bit easier now though but I got it open once out of 5 tries just now.

And i just saw that video..mine is nothing like that man. That's exactly how it is for my TI-84, it just slides off smoothly. But my TI-89 is just locked.. Trust me I know how to open a dang TI calculator.

When I worked at best buy I dealt with morons who think they can get what they want when they act like an asshole and sadly sometimes they are right. But when it is about you not being able to open a calculator that's retarded. Although the manager is a dick, any store should just do the exchange, they don't lose money.
Two easy options are going there and returning the entire thing. There isn't a restocking fee on calculators usually. Then just re-buying it because they are assholes. They can't refuse a return if its within the time frame, however if its out of a 30 day period then the manager has grounds for refusing the return and is just being a dick about the exchange. The other option is just going to another office max.
Hell if it is that much of an issue go to staples or something buy the exact same calculator (After asking the return policy) and just return your shitty one. I am pretty sure they don't use serial numbers to identify calculators.

Joe did you even read the two reasons I listed in my OP why I need the lid opened?
I can't return the calculator because I used a gift card to pay for it. Basically I can use the gift card to pay for things but I can't get money put back onto it. My only option is an exchange. Of course I would've returned it and bought it at a new store long time ago if I had that option. And to the guy who responded above this thanks alot..those are kinda suggestion thats im looking for. But what's a BBB?

They can ALWAYS return things onto a gift card. If its a Visa card they can put it back on as long as you have it, if its an Office Max gift card they can just give you a new one. I see your reasons your batteries will die and buttons will get hit. I gave you suggestions, you never said you payed with a gift card or explained anything besides that.

I wrote in a hurry so i forgot that part. I was trying to type this up fast so i can go back to my calculus 3 hw. And I don't have time right now to dig through the instructions that came with my gift card but the employees walked me over to a gift card they had in their store and it's written on the gift card where u can't put money back into it or something like that.
Listen I don't want to argue about that my only option is an exchange and the product I bought is seoirusly something wrong with it. Is there nothing I can do? What is that "BBB" thing that guy was talking about? Who can i talk to that can get this problem resolved that's higher than the manager?

I am sure things differ between major retailers but I highly doubt its that much. They can always return money onto a gift card, hell if people don't have a receipt but have a store brand product its put onto a gift card if its under a certain amount usually. Chances are they can refund you. Tell them to do it and if they refuse to do right by you ask them for the HR number and call it while you are in the store and explain your issue. The manager will get bitched at for acting like a shithead and they will always put the customer first regardless of how stupid your complaint is. To clarify I am not saying your stupid, I am saying they make mends with morons because they want their money, so if you give them half a good reason they will help you.
Make sure to stress how it was a bad customer experience and how the manager was a dick.

They told me ther's a 15% re-stocking fee too which i forgot to mention but at this point if all fails I'm willing to take that route cuz this is fukin ridiculous. So I'll try opening the calculator in front of them tomorrow and if still no exchange I'll ask for a refund joe. What is a HR number? Like what does "HR" stand for. I'm scared they might look at me funny like they don't know what that is cuz i dont even know what that is
Also I think they did say they can refund it however it will be onto an OFFICE MAX gift card meaning I can only use it at office max..

Human Resources, and I was asking if it was an Office Max gift card or one from Visa, Mastercard, etc. Either way they CAN refund it. If you don't possess the original Visa/Mastercard gift card though they can only put it to a gift card because those cards are essentially credit cards so they need to put it all back directly on there.
15% on a calculator is balls, but whatever that kind of sucks.

Ok that sounds legit. But seroiusly one of the emplyees walked me over to one of their gift cards and it was written explicitely that money can't be put back onto gift cards..
Anyways it was a chase gift card and it has DEBIT then underneath says VISA so yea. Yea I just did the calculation and they are taking 20$ from me cuz of the restocking fee sigh..and another extra 20$ for when i buy a new one so 40 dollars total and the gas money wasted from driving to this stupid place 5 fukin times. Life sucks.

This is what you get for buying an alien device. You might think a human could just open the lid, but no. The alien technology is linked with their DNA and the calculator won't open for you. It just doesn't work like that.

Alright so I looked around a little more, apparently there is a restocking fee on calculators.

It lists "Technology" devices as within 14 days and subject to 15% restocking fee. However calculators are not directly noted on the return policy as being subject you only realize that upon further inspection when you LOOK UP calculators they fall under the technology portion of their site.

Which is really stupid. If you called up corporate (another term for HR) you could argue the receipt is too vague and you weren't informed. It lists a bunch of products specifically but NOT calculators, which by default you could reasonably consider an office supply over a technology product.
Make sure to mention that you were attempting to return/exchange it within the 14 days either way though so that management would have less of a leg to stand on when arguing. You want to be as right as possible in regards to their policy even if corporate is more likely to force them to bend to your will.

Oh and I looked a little more, best buy DOES NOT have a restocking fee on calculators. So if you can force them to give you a refund you can go there and get it.
Oh and since you said it was a visa gift card they can return it onto that SPECIFIC card if you still have it. Those cards function as a credit card and are subject to the return policies surrounding credit cards.
and what they had you read was this:
Gift Cards/Prepaid cards
Prepaid phone cards, OfficeMax gift cards and other gift cards purchased through OfficeMax are not eligible for return. Prepaid cards and gift cards are not redeemable for cash (unless required by law) and are subject to the terms and conditions stated on the individual card.
This means that you cannot for example buy a gift card then change your mind about buying it and decide to return it. You CAN however return something that was bought with a gift card.
Upon reading this again, those guys are real manipulative douche bags rofl, they had you read the return policy on gift cards to make you think you couldn't return something bought with a gift card.
Refunds
Refunds will be made in the same form of payment used for the purchase (checks over $250 will be refunded via a mail check to the customer). Refunds for credit card purchases will only be refunded to the same card used for the original purchase. For customers buying on account, a credit will be issued to that account.
Authorized returns without the original sales receipt will be issued a Merchandise Credit. Any such return is subject to verification and will require a valid State Identification Card, Driver's License, Passport or Military ID. (Merchandise Credits are not eligible for use on the purchase of other gift cards or prepaid cards, or redeemable for cash unless otherwise required by law)
