My Store burnt down

My Electronic Cigarette store burnt down along with about 40 other stores. A random act of intentional destruction. I know about 20 people who have now lost their life savings and had their lives ruined and over 20,000 are now jobless.

People can be so cruel.

Two of my people are without jobs and millions and millions of dollars are going to waste.

News Coverage

Its in the westfield galleria in roseville.

Not one person was hurt. So the day ends sad but not tragic!

Sorry to hear that, but a couple of things: 20,000 people? that can't be right. also, don't stores have to have insurance?

It is a very big mall.

Fire insurance is required for perm. tenants with contracts more then 6 years long. 50% of the stores in that area don't fall into that categlory.

It is expensive insurance combined with liability alot can't afford it.

That's the attitude I'd expect from a cigarette store owner :p I don't mean to make light of things, but it's ironic that it was an electronic cigarette store that was burnt down.

Hope all goes well in setting back up.

Sucks.

Why would someone do that is what I wonder (shits and giggles, rebellion, strange moral reason)? Is it confirmed to be an act of arson?

Either way, I hope that those store owners get their shops back up but I'm worried about the employees too. In all likelihood some will not get a chance to get back into work. Are any employees guaranteed their positions back or will it be reapplications when stores reopen? I have no idea how that gets played out when places burn down.

The news coverage I saw earlier tonight said it was within a localized area of the mall, or was it much more significant? Also, 20,000 sounds like a huge exaggeration. Regardless of all that, I'm terribly sorry to hear about your business; it's always interesting to read your blogs about expanding it and what not, so I hate to have to read a setback like this for you. I've been to that mall a few times too and it's lovely, quite a shame.

Ya 20,000 seems like some hogwash. The Great mall, Valley Fair, Santana Row, and Valco malls in my San Jose, CA area prolly have half that combined...and they are all huge malls.

The entire mall is ruined from water and smoke and in the exact segment from jcpennys to macys that this occured there are a huge numbers of stores.

jcpenny,nordstorm and macys combine for over 8,000 jobs and those are just 3 of the 240 stores and food places. Micky d's has 30 people and its a tiny tiny spot.

Valleys fair has thousands of people working just per DAY. They have a huge huge emp pop. Think of all the jobs in a mall. Gardening indoor outdoor security, fastfood, waste management and delivery. Just that alone is over a thousand and that is before you get too the giants like macys and nordstorm and cafes. I'm not sure where your getting these made up numbers, but lets take for example Walmart which is possibly one of the biggest stores in the world. They have 2.1 employees with over 8,400 stores. This would put the average WALMART store employeeing 238 people.....

You are just guessing how many people work in a mall or strip mall. I provided a link to Walmart, which is the biggest store in the world. ONE Walmart superstore is the size of some malls.....

I live next door to valley fair and santana row. I can tell you most of the stores are small and employ just a handful of emplyees. Sure there is a Boarders, a JC Penny, a Safeway. But there are also 90 stores the size of a living room that have like 10 or fewer employees. Then theres prolly about 75 2 man shops that employ like 5 people total each.

edit: mentioning security, waste managemnet etc is silly. You are for sure guessing at your 20,000 number. I applied for a security position at valley fair several years ago....and I work Security now. They employ about 20 security guards total at valley fair. Stop making stuff up.

Guys just cut it out. Who care's if the number's right or wrong, point is many people lost their jobs because of an act of malice.

Man, I read your blog about your store before, and its amazing that you started out so small, so recently, yet you own a couple stores now. I hope you recover from your loss quickly. I hope the arsonist gets at least life in jail for ruining so many dreams.

You'll need to do better than unspecific numbers and first-hand guesses from someone not in store management to put up a convincing skepticism against the OP.

First of all, numbers from a tiny description on a massive international corporation aren't extremely meaningful. Wal-mart operates internationally, so they have as many tools to hedge head-counts on the books as there are legal jurisdictions that they're involved in. Secondly, the only similarity between a mall and an individual Wal-mart is that they both handle retail to some extent. A mall is not only a conglomerate of innumerable stores running different business models, it is its own entity, handling many different small jobs that a corporation like Wal-mart would contract out. Inventory management, warehouse management, shipping, cleaning, grounds-keeping, security, are all often handled by companies independent of the store-owners.

20,000 is a significant number, and it's fair enough to be curious about how it was determined, but to outright deny it is just rude.

One person says something, someone else attempts to disprove him, and mayhem ensues because no one will ever man up and accept that they are wrong. I'm not belittling any of you because it happens all the time, and is part of human nature. But I really hope that one day, some of you will finally realize that sometimes trying to force everybody to acknowledge you just isn't worth it. I doubt anyone will ever prove the exact amount of people working at the stores that burnt down, and every estimation given will be flawed to some degree. Let's not forget it's actually pretty irrelevant anyway.

The fact stands that it sucks a bunch of people will be unemployed and that it's depressing to see someone do this for a probably extremely selfish reason. Honestly, the desire to nitpick everything (especially if it doesn't change anything) and miss the heart of a discussion is a sad part of society today as well.
