Fire insurance is required for perm. tenants with contracts more then 6 years long. 50% of the stores in that area don't fall into that categlory. It is expensive insurance combined with liability alot can't afford it.

That's the attitude I'd expect from a cigarette store owner :p I don't mean to make light of things, but it's ironic that it was an electronic cigarette store that was burnt down. Hope all goes well in setting back up.

Sucks. Why would someone do that is what I wonder (shits and giggles, rebellion, strange moral reason)? Is it confirmed to be an act of arson? Either way, I hope that those store owners get their shops back up but I'm worried about the employees too. In all likelihood some will not get a chance to get back into work. Are any employees guaranteed their positions back or will it be reapplications when stores reopen? I have no idea how that gets played out when places burn down.

jcpenny, nordstorm and macys combine for over 8,000 jobs and those are just 3 of the 240 stores and food places. Micky d's has 30 people and its a tiny tiny spot.

The Great mall, Valley Fair, Santana Row, and Valco malls in my San Jose, CA area prolly have half that combined...and they are all huge malls. Valleys fair has thousands of people working just per DAY. They have a huge huge emp pop. Think of all the jobs in a mall. Gardening indoor outdoor security, fastfood, waste management and delivery. Just that alone is over a thousand and that is before you get too the giants like macys and nordstorm and cafes. Like 30,000 people min visit valley faire every day and up to 100,000k on the weekends. The ratio of 2,000 to 1 emp in the mall sounds stupid .... because it is. The ratio is much smaller.

http://www.hoovers.com/company/Wal-Mart_Stores_Inc/rrjiff-1-1njg4g.html You said 20,000 people were out of jobs. That number is hogwash. Ya tons of people visit valley fair. That doesnt mean that there are thousands upon thousands of people employed there...... You are just guessing how many people work in a mall or strip mall. I provided a link to Walmart, which is the biggest store in the world. ONE Walmart superstore is the size of some malls..... I live next door to valley fair and santana row. I can tell you most of the stores are small and employ just a handful of emplyees. Sure there is a Boarders, a JC Penny, a Safeway. But there are also 90 stores the size of a living room that have like 10 or fewer employees. Then theres prolly about 75 2 man shops that employ like 5 people total each. edit: mentioning security, waste managemnet etc is silly. You are for sure guessing at your 20,000 number. I applied for a security position at valley fair several years ago....and I work Security now. They employ about 20 security guards total at valley fair. Stop making stuff up.

Man, I read your blog about your store before, and its amazing that you started out so small, so recently, yet you own a couple stores now. I hope you recover from your loss quickly. I hope the arsonist gets at least life in jail for ruining so many dreams.

They have 2.1 employees with over 8,400 stores. This would put the average WALMART store employeeing 238 people..... http://www.hoovers.com/company/Wal-Mart_Stores_Inc/rrjiff-1-1njg4g.html You said 20,000 people were out of jobs. But there are also 50 stores the size of a living room that have like 10 or fewer employees. You'll need to do better than unspecific numbers and first-hand guesses from someone not in store management to put up a convincing skepticism against the OP. First of all, numbers from a tiny description on a massive international corporation aren't extremely meaningful. Wal-mart operates internationally, so they have as many tools to hedge head-counts on the books as there are legal jurisdictions that they're involved in. Secondly, the only similarity between a mall and an individual Wal-mart is that they both handle retail to some extent. A mall is not only a conglomerate of innumerable stores running different business models, it is its own entity, handling many different small jobs that a corporation like Wal-mart would contract out. Inventory management, warehouse management, shipping, cleaning, grounds-keeping, security, are all often handled by companies independent of the store-owners. 20,000 is a significant number, and it's fair enough to be curious about how it was determined, but to outright deny it is just rude.

Not really a "man," but more of a boy. It's interesting how one boy can destroy the lives of many men. If you can provide me an actual link like I did for a huge store like Walmart.......that shows Westfield Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA employees anywhere near 20,000 employees I will cut off my penis and mail it to you. Postage will be on me. Ehh, this is why I plan to never post after this 100th post. Because this stuff happens on the forums all the time, guaranteed. One person says something, someone else attempts to disprove him, and mayhem ensues because no one will ever man up and accept that they are wrong. I'm not belittling any of you because it happens all the time, and is part of human nature. But I really hope that one day, some of you will finally realize that sometimes trying to force everybody to acknowledge you just isn't worth it. I doubt anyone will ever prove the exact amount of people working at the stores that burnt down, and every estimation given will be flawed to some degree. So in that case, let's just drop it because it would be pointless to argue any further. I'm not trying to be better than any of you, and if I did say so I'd be lying.

Let's not forget it's actually pretty irrelevant anyway. The fact stands that it sucks a bunch of people will be unemployed and that it's depressing to see someone do this for a probably extremely selfish reason. Honestly, the desire to nitpick everything (especially if it doesn't change anything) and miss the heart of a discussion is a sad part of society today as well.
