When he first installed it, I was beside him and he couldn't use the guest feature until I logged into my account on his computer. Then the guest feature was accessable. Can't be a coincidence.

It kind of "activates" the game. From then he can always play as guest and its totally offline. It has NOTHING to do with your account anymore.

I believe the guest accounts only stays active 30 days after you logged in with a "real" account on battle net. After days, it needs to reactivate and need to log on to b-net on a account.
