I like to make unsubstantiated opinions based on nothing more than gut instinct.

Human societies are fast approaching the stage where further developments in complexity and specialization are more costly than beneficial. In "advanced" societies, we see that most innovation is directed toward rent-seeking (like financial engineering) rather than developing new ways to live or to thrive. In less-developed societies, we see cargo cult-ish imitation attempts that lead to disastrous market bubbles and retarded economic choices.

The reason for this is the closing of the physical unknown to the human mind. The geographic unknown, the great wilderness, the open frontier--it has always served as a productive stimulus to human ingenuity and a productive vent and channel for excess capital from developed societies. However, once the frontier is gone, the excess productivity of a complex society becomes inevitably directed toward rent-seeking behavior both internally and externally (war).

Today, the unknown has become mostly technological. Why, you might ask, can the benefits of a physical frontier not be replicated here? It is because the current way of distributing the benefits of new technology is fraught with rent-seeking; a mind or organization which is engrossed in envisioning new technologies is often poorly equipped to think about how to correctly derive benefit from them. Moreso, much technological development seems to be focused on either something altruisitic (green energy) or something which offers no utilitarian benefit to society (increasing healthcare for the elderly--there is no benefit to keeping someone alive past year 80).

In order to resume human progress, we as a species need to open up the stars to human exploration--for profit.

One of the greatest crimes of the 1960s was the American effort to put a man on the moon. Kennedy and later administrations justified the cost as a way of acquiring prestige, and as a way of going in the name of "all mankind". The result of such a motive is obvious in hindsight. Seen as a purely cost item without any intended economic benefit, the Apollo program was killed in the 1970s.

The crime was that all later space exploration efforts became tainted with this air of exploring for exploring's sake. This culminated in a legal statement that space belonged to all humanity (see the 1967 Outer Space Treaty). This is a stupid notion as it made all of space effectively a cost item to any organization or nation, as any economic benefits would be nearly impossible to claim.

Space should belong to those that claim it.

In order to reverse this travesty and give humanity a new frontier to explore, it is necessary to revise this law. We should start with the moon, as it is a natural stepping stone to further space development.

The treaty should be revised to state: any organization which maintains continuous human habitation of a period not under one year on a particular point on the lunar surface will be granted one hundred years of subsurface and surface development rights within a three-hundred kilometer radius of that point of habitation.

In essence, if you live on the moon for a year, you'll own everything around you for a century. Good deal, and should stimulate space development without costing any governments tax breaks or any of that meaningless jazz.

Most importantly, it will push exploration in an economically sustainable direction--because the profit motive will probably be the only feasible long-term driver for this goal. And at a time when we as a species face an inflection point of resource overcrowding and rent-seeking behavior, such an outlet--a frontier--would not come a moment too soon.

TL:DR

We need to open up space to private claiming otherwise we're all going to end up overcrowding this planet and killing each other because public space exploration will never include the profit motive.

It's time for some real life TvT. I want to see me some goliaths.

You need to read this

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3208219

An expert in the field really gives you the skinny one why / why not this is going to happen. Terribly interesting and he is a bright fellow with _substantiated_ claims!

Just to get you started

Now, I’d like to first get The List out of the way. The List (this isn't a technical term, it's just a very important list) is the listing of the major factors restricting or otherwise impeding human expansion into space, irrespective of theoretical/ existing-non-implemented solutions.

Impediments to Space Colonization/ Development
Earth Based

* Cost: Space development takes money. Governments, people, corporations, someone has to cop up this money sometime, either via taxed money, corporate investment, or whatever. This money’s looseness often is controlled by…
* Societal Attitudes: Governments/ corporations/ societies as a whole are often hesitant to put large amounts money into space development. People do not see the benefits (or do not believe there are immediate benefits to them), think any practical results are impossible, or just don’t care about science or space. Can be changed by PR, information diffusion (like this), and, as history shows, nationalism.
* Earth-to-Space mass transportation limitations: Related to money: it is really expensive to get ANYTHING into space. Rockets cost money. Fuel for those rockets costs money. They’re not very efficient per mass, really. There are ways to make transportation MUCH cheaper once in space, but people, and early technology, has to be still launched from Earth into space.

Space Based

* Space weather: Van Allen belt radiation, solar flares, and other activate radioactive events are present in space, and can gravely hurt kill people.
* Weight bearing structure atrophy: Muscles, bones, and other structures which are strengthened/ maintained on Earth due to the constant 1g acceleration due to gravity tend to atrophy in the microgravity of space, even with daily exercise. Bone tissue mass lost is ~1.5% per month. Causes issues for people returning to Earth, and it is currently unknown if they recover completely.
* Fluid balance: Weightlessness can affect the body’s fluid dynamics, resulting in a 20% volume decrease in blood plasma. This can result in temporary health issues upon return to Earth (standing for long periods of time leading to fainting), worse if one is in space longer, though it is unknown what long term effects there would be.
* Resources: It takes resources to live and develop space, including building materials, the energy used to power technology, as well as the oxygen, water, and food that sustain people in space.
* Psychology: Being in space, especially in barren/ restricted housing, can have effects on the human psyche.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Now, I’d like to say outright that there are already several models which solve all or most of the problems contained in the Space part of The List.
Each day gets better : )

Wait, there is an almost abstract last place which is protected from greed, wars, pollution, and belongs tio everybody and you want to open it to private interest?

I'll never understand some people.

Let's big corporations and superpower fight for moar money and power in the whole universe... Exciting. Sometimes I wish the human race just disappear.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. As a physics student I am often confronted with the question of why we should go through all this trouble to find out stuff about the universe. Especially in fields such as fundamental particles people see no direct use for this therefore they deem it unreasonable/ unnecessary and think research money could be better spent on different things. This to me is a disgusting attitude.
I understand your argument in that "exploring just for the sake of exploring" isn't very profitable and will probably not motivate large corporations to fund such operations. Still, to me this is not the right way of going about this. Learning/exploring has always had human curiosity as a driving force behind it. That's the way it should be in my opinion, financial interests should not have anything to do with science (I know this isn't completely true).

I completely, wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. Financial interests should have EVERYTHING to do with science...nobody will pay for something which doesn't benefit them. If we have science finding out a bunch of stuff, but none of it is of any use to anybody (never true but since we're positing hypothetical scenarios), then we should get rid of it.

And, obviously, science costs $$.

I read through the SA post linked up there a little while back. I dug up this thread again to find it, and now we have to pay $9.95 to JOIN sa + ANOTHER $9.95 to access the archives? What is this bullshit? I'm gonna start copypasting every useful thing I see.
