Over the last couple days I have become obsessed with finding the perfect zerg hotkey setup, so I figured, why not get some opinions. I know there are threads on hotkey setup as Z, but none of them really go into the same depth of control I would like.... The problem is I am running out of keys... (wish I had f1-4... sometimes I wish I was protoss... this wouldn't be an issue)

OK, I'm gonna break this up into two parts, queen control and hatch control, and list the possible methods and their pro/cons.

HATCHERY CONTROL:
1) Hotkey each individual hatchery, allowing you to change screens and macro from each individual hatch. Problem here being it takes extra keystrokes to mass macro and set rally points.
2) All in one group, problem here being you can't jump to each base for vision purposes or macro from specific hatcheries.
3) Both (one group with all, then each individual). Problem here being it uses up an extra key.

QUEEN CONTROL:
a) Don't hotkey them, use hatch key and click>v>click problem here being extra keystrokes.
b) Hotkey each queen (then double tap or click minimap), problem here being the key doesn't double as a macro key, and if the queen is moved to defend or gets killed you can no longer jump to that hatch.
c) All queens in one group + backspace method for mass fast macro. (shift que inject using backspace to switch hatcheries). Problem here being extra keystrokes in the early game just to inject your main & nat.

Now, for the first 2/3 of beta I used method 1a. This starts to get clumsy as you get into the late game and requires extra keystrokes to inject, rally, and even macro.

Then I tried method 2b (I think this is what idra uses), but I really don't like how you don't have control over which hatchery produces what unit, and how if your queens die/get pulled for D you can't jump to the base.

SO THEN, I decided to try method 1a + 2 (extra key with all hatcheries in them). This is great for macro AND jumping screens. I was content with this for a while until I found about backspace injecting.

Now I am trying to use methods 1a and 2c at the same time, but the problem here becomes somewhat obvious... You run out of keys.... I'm quite used to having my main base on 5, but I figure the only way to reasonably do this is to use 6-0 for bases. I figure this is probably my best bet... and I think its the best possible hotkey setup for Z, that gives both utmost control and macro speed, while sacrificing

1-3 units (I'm pretty sure 3 groups will be enough ><)
4-queens
5-hatcheries
6-base1
7-base2
8-base3
9-base4
0-base5

What do you guys think? / What method do you use?

I use 1-3 units 4 all hatch 5-0 queens for each base, and I just remember which queen corresponds to each base so if I need to drone pump one I just 7click sd 4 etc.

I considered this, but I never want to have to click to build units. I can deal with delaying an inject if I absolutely can't look away from the battle, but certainly not my immediate wave of reinforcements... but I guess you are using 4 for that anyways. I wish we just had f1-f4... seriously.

I dunno, this method appeals I suppose, I just don't like hotkeying individual queens that much... I want to be able to do the backspace method and jump to each base... maybe I should just use my own overcomplicated setup, since clearly I'm having trouble compromising either way.

Weird. I have the same hotkeys as July does, same as I had in Brood War.

4,5,6,7,8,9,0 hatcheries. 1,2,3 units. I do a single hatchery a hotkey. Old school.
I want to fuck Soulkey with a Zelderan.

I don't really have input besides what I've been using:

1) All Hatcheries
2 Early) Important Building (spawning pool to get speed, hydra den to get range, etc.)
2 Late) Infestors
3) Zergling group
4) Hydra/Roach group
5) Current Scout
6) Evo Chambers
7) Queen Main
8) Queen Nat
9) Queen Third
0) Queen Fourth

If I had July's apm I would probably use that oldschool setup as well lol.

1-2 for units - 3 overseers. 4 all queens in one group (i never get more than 4).

5 all hatcheries and then i happen to not make much use the rest. When i think about it maybe 1-2 is too little for units but im already used to this setup and rather than have more hotkeys for more units i rely on more on the spot micro, such as individually pulling lings from my main group to use for flanking. 2 for infestors or a relatively large flanking group such as mutalisks.

when it comes to injects with this setup eventually its like a clock in your head, you just sorta click the minimap or double click on the hatchery hotkey to check how far spawn larvae is on your main hatch (usually the first hatch you spew on regardless).

I was finding that I wasn't using 6 in my setup, so I decided to start hotkeying those to keep on top of upgrades.

If you hotkey queen + hatchery to 1 building you can have queen on first press then tab for hatchery.

What I'm moving towards for a scheme is...

5- all hatcheries
6- Queen + main
7- Queen + nat
8- Queen + 3rd
...
etc
...

So if I want to build from a particular hatch I can hit 7tab -> build, if I want to build from all hatcheries it's 5-> build. Queen macro is just 66v 77v 88v 99v.

I don't particularly like the backspace method because it can cause your queens to do some funky stuff and if you don't have 1:1 queen:hatch ratio it doesn't really work.

use the one you encoded. usually you hotkey the units ( in BW at least) so you can micro them according to what they will do at the moment, meaning no specific unit stays at the same hotkey for a very long period of time. thats because of the limited no of units per hotkey. well in SC2 its different but same mechanics apply. save a hotkey for scouting units and change that accordingly to an army unit you will use afterwards. example, use 3 for overseers, then after scouting change the unit content to defending units like hydras, or secondary assault units. hopefully you get the pt. but your proposed hotkeys are fine.

When I played I just did:
1-4 units I usually just separate them, like 1 - zerglings 2 - roach/hydra 3 - infestors 4 - whatever else (usually muta, I like having mutas bound to 4)
5 - 0 hatcheries I don't hotkey queens, I just manually click on them to inject larva onto the hatchery

They're really simple and yours look good. ^^

1-4 units, 5-0 hatcheries, with 0 occasionally being used for a specific unit or building. Pretty simple, pretty solid, pretty good, and pretty.

I used 0 for all hatches, 9 and under for queens individually(so 9 for my main hatch, 8 for my expo, 7 for my 3rd, etc), and the rest going up from 1 for units.
I don't see a point for putting each hatch to a different hotkey, but that's just me. Whenever I want to go to a hatch real quick, i just hit backspace a couple of times.

For my units I use the following:
1. ling, bilng, ultra, muta if im going muta or corruptors if im using them
2. roaches
3. hydra
4. infestors
5-6 i generally dont use, but sometimes I might put a couple of banelings and an infestor in a onverlord and go kill off my opponent's workers or something.

Im a 800 diamond zerg.

I use groups of hatchery: one for the units, the other for the drones and then in late game one group for each hatch that are _close_.
So at the beginning it is 5 main, 6 exp, 7 and 8 the 2 queens.
Then it is 5 for the main and exp, 6 for the B3 and B4, and I group my queens in 7 and use the minimap. I don't like the backspace method since you need to have one queen per hatch if you want to do it fast (without having to look if there is indeed a queen at the current hatch). 8 will contain the B4 if it is not saturated or a B5. So that when I have time for drones i do 8+... then 5 and 6, while if I want production first I do 5 and 6 then 8 for drones (so that hatch that are in the drones group and production groups makes units or production first according to what I need). I could group 5 an 6 together, but it is easier for setting up flanks.

I've been using a similar hotkey setup as OP, 1-3 units, 4 queens, 5 hatches, but I haven't tried setting each hatch individually after. Instead I just click on the minimap to move from hatch to hatch, which I guess seems just a tiny bit slower for injecting than using hotkeys (takes like half a second to jump screens as opposed to like 0.1 using hotkeys). I think I'll see how it feels using 6-0.

I dislike any setup that hotkeys queens individually because often you can have up to 3-4 queens on 2 base and they can die, which just seems like a pain to deal with, and transfusion is harder to use.

This could be solved with F keys being brought back, haha... Oh well.
EDIT: WAIT WHAT?! LOL. I'll have to do that next time I play. Gah, I can't believe I missed that. (Unless it's just a really good photoshop. If so, it's very convincing).

It's legit, but only f8 and f9 work, which is fucking retarded. F10 brings up menu and f11 message log.

I don't know why the hell th ey don't give us f1-f4...
