아녕하새요 팀 리크웓 <----- I did not write this, some mod edited for me and did not even spelled "hello" in Korean correctly. If I was teaching you Korean, I wouldn't make this mistake. Fail mod. And the correct spelling is "안녕하세요" LOL you clearly don't understand what happened here QS.
Hey TL,
As the past weeks have gone by, I've been told that I should rise up and teach Koreans for those who don't know in several places (mainly livestream while I translate PL/OSL/MSL games). I told these people (random TLers who I do not know mostly) that were interested that I would start sometime this month. I kinda gave a date which didn't occur due to many happenings in life (internship at ABC, fight with dad, college, drama, more drama, etc) but realized that I gave them a promise, so I have to fulfill it! So first off, I want to apologize many of those who waited and thought I would start last week or so with this but at the same time, I want to proudly present and announce that I will keep my promise and commit myself to do this in the very soon near future!
So introductions.... alright, I'm guessing many of you TLers probably have NO CLUE what I am talking about and think I'm crazy about me teaching Korean language to random TLers via livestream for free. Yes, I am crazy, I am doing this for free, and I'm going to do it weekly style and start it off like a webcast of how Day9 would run his shows. That means, I'll show my face, I'll discuss some Starcraft (and Korean obviously), and have a webcam, some sort of board to write and show, and various materials to give you the teachings of that particular week. Why? Why go so far for people you don't know, will never meet, and don't have a single clue what sort of stalker will watch me? Because you guys are teamliquid and I'm from TL and TL is like home to me. And since all of you TLers are also in TL, that practically make us like family of 1000000000s of brothers and 1-10 sisters. Right? RIGHT?!?!?!
Finally, I'll leave this blog for questions and answers regarding the upcoming initial series of QuickStriker's teachings of Korean language/culture as I'll gladly any answers that haven't already been answered and not been said on the OP. So without further ado.... some rundown:
Rundowns: + Show Spoiler +Expected starting date: August 30? ( 60% likely atm) Expected day to run per week: Sundays (85% likely) Expected time of the show: Evenings around 8 or 9 PM and last an hour or two in EASTERN STANDARD TIME. (70% likely) Expected ethnicity background of the teacher: Korean (100%!!!) Purpose of the class:This class is a supplement and not meant to be the sole resource to learn Korean. It’s nice to refresh and use as supporting device in order to learn Korean. But since you probably won’t (or use) time to learn Korean by your own, you won’t get gain much. But I’ll try to at least help you understand the basic level of Korean, and also at least motivate you to learn Korean by yourself when you graduate from my class. Some reasons why you would want to learn Korean:1. To understand Korean commentaries more in SC games 2. To understand the Korean style/language/nature of the commentary. 3. To understand the Korean mindset/thought process/culture seen in SC matches and also when meeting an actual Korean. 4. To score a Korean girl.5. YOU CAN TALK TO CHILL!QS’s personal goals:1. Increase the general knowledge of Korean on TL at least by 1% 2. Have at least 50% of TLers knowing how to say/write their name in Korean 3. Have at least 5 people who can become as 1/4 good as I am in Korean. 5 Points of Korean language into real world:1. Food 2. Name 3. Girl 4. Starcraft 5. Soju Equipment to invest and buy for me to start teaching:1. Voice set (Check!) 2. Korean keyboard (Check!) 3. Dual monitor ( Check Just realized yesterday, my desktop can't support dual monitor ) 4. Head set (Check!) 5. Webcam (Still required.... trying to find a very cheap one atm under 20.... can't find) CHECK!6. White board or dry erase board + related materials ( Still required... trying to wait for super sale season at Staples) Note regarding equipment: I'm spending my own money so I'm going to buy and invest in the cheapest items I can find until further notice. Currently, all the ones I have with me are VERY cheap like this 10 dollar voice set, a 5 dollar headphones, and Korean keyboard I brought for 10 dollars when I was at Korea a year ago... So expect the class to be VERY CHEAP ORIENTATED! (Because it's free)
Lastly, I am informing and telling all of you that if anyone really wish to learn Korean, this Korean class shouldn't be the ONLY SOURCE to learn Korean as you'll won't gain much. As stated in the rundown section. And I am sorta in need of graphics designers and some helpers for those who are interested to make my life easier. This is a community project I want to start on TL so let's make it happen folks!
Also, if a lot of interest sparks up here and all over TL, I will make another thread under TL Community regarding this as an actual official thread (LRish? :D) when the show start. Thanks!
Edit: SCREW YOU WHOEVER CAME IN TO PUT INSTANT ONE STAR THE MOMENT I MADE THIS THREAD! (had to say it... sorry, pisses me off, seriously, that one person who does it to every blog I ever made... grrr...)

YAY! If I learn Korean, I can talk to Chill!

sounds really cool. Teamliquid is well on its way to becoming a substitute for summerschool hehe. I think I might check this out when you start streaming. good luck getting it put together!
|
Awesome initiative QS, I don't want other ppl scoring Korean girls though. (they're ALL MINE! RAWR!)
When you're teaching over stream, I think you can expect your viewers to be able to google/wiki/whatever fairly quickly, which helps you a lot. I strongly agree with promoting Korean culture awareness.
|
Won't be helping out with teaching, but if you have any questions regarding Korean language/culture, PM me and I'll answer.
QS you better do a good job at this.

Will there be a lesson about words we should know for when we watch starcraft?

But ya, rather than actually have TLers suddenly start speaking Korean left and right, my main goal really is to spread that culture awareness of what Korea is. And good thinking, people googling/wiking/researching pretty quickly over the web. Gotta remember that.

I wanna talk to Chill!
Seriously, this is awesome. I've been trying to learn Korean for a while now, and I've been doing some stuff on youtube and livemocha, but I'm getting lazy and not keeping up with it. I think a set schedule like your stream will really help me.
EDIT: Also, I've already decided. My Korean name will be Lee Young Ho.

you don't need a korean keyboard to type korean

I will totally watch this, but this probably woulda been more popular before SC2 era. Whatever, still interested! :D

On August 23 2010 12:49 konadora wrote: you don't need a korean keyboard to type korean Yes I know that. But a Korean keyboard that has Korean letters on each key instead of reading it off the computer or internet is SO MUCH CONVENIENT. So at least for that reason (along with other lesser minor reasons), it's necessary for me! :D

Another one for the rundown. In 4v4s when you start typing Korean, it makes the opposing team just mentally give up.

QS.. Lucky I found this blog! I just spent the last 2 weeks in Malaysia for work and met some really super nice (hot) korean folk (girls). I spent a day learning the korean alphabet - very easy and logical, so now I can (very slowly) read and write korean. I don't know any words tho.
I'm very interested in this!! Any chance of putting the videos up as vods for later? In Australia, it's midday monday when you'll be streaming, so I'll be at work :[
Also, if you're stuck for what to teach, or need a good place for ideas- check out www.braverobotkorean.com - Very easy, well written intro to korean!
고마워요!!

great idea! i'd tune in.
what time zone are you going to broadcast from? and will the casts be available (on demand) for those who miss an episode?
|
any idea how you are going to plan your lectures? like the flow and such?
pronunciations -> simple common phrases -> sentence structure -> grammar points??
|
sounds excellent ill check it out for sure

Before I answer these questions, I realized I need help with one thing that I don't know the answer to. HOW DO ONE SAVE WEBCAST video files?!? I'm planning to do this on livestream, familiar with camtasia and never used procaster... judging by this situation, I might have to use procaster but I guess I'll have to spend the week figuring out how to easily save the cast into a video file so I can upload for easy access or someone can answer me simply here too to save me from pain...

Hey thanks! I'll definitely would put up videos as vods later ONLY IF I KNOW how to save the video into a file.... I want to put them in a file and upload them into megaupload for on-demand situations and maybe youtube. But ya, I just gotta know how to do that first..

I would make the casts available on demand for livestream like one episode at a time and delete the previous one after when the following week happens so I don't overload too much space on livestream. Ideally, I want to do that plus put videos for download on sites like megaupload and maybe on youtube if I have time and ability to do so...

pronunciations -> simple common phrases -> sentence structure -> grammar points?? Still planning in process. All of them I'll definitely go over at least to a brief level like for sentence structure and grammar points but like I said, the main purpose is to spread awareness and interest to learn Korean so ideally people would go off on their own to pursuit their interest to learn Korean by themselves.
By all means, I'm not a real teacher, professor, or anything of sort. My only teaching experience is teaching English in Korea to elementary school kids for 6 months and that's like amateurish the way I did it. And I have no intention to treat any of you as elementary school kids since none of you are...
So, if anyone can help me with planning my lectures and all, that'll be great as well. Like a planner assistant would be ideal. Otherwise, I'll just have to make the best with what I have access and have to provide the best Korean class I can give!
|
Wow I'm pretty damn excited quicksilver. Shoot me a pm with what you want to do with the graphics/banner. Actually I'll send you a pm.

This sounds like an awesome idea! Would be great if you could upload it somewhere on demand, so poor little me in Scandinavia dosent have to sit up all night ^^

I was kidding, I'm sorry T_T
Legitly though, I have lots of Korean friends that I want to communicate with in Korean. It would seriously help me get in touch with their culture and be able to understand them and make it easier for them to communicate with me.

Bump! Came back home just now after a long day off my internship that was fulfilling and exciting. Want to promote this blog a little more until I get everything ready to see if it would really be worthwhile to do this. :D
Anyway, I'm still searching for a really cheap and good dry erase board and webcam... I tried Staples today and it's not on sale... checking best buys tomorrow...
But it seems some mod liked to play a trick on me trying to undermine my good will intention and mock my Korean skills....
Also, I need a good name for this.... a good cast/show always start with a good title.... any suggestions?

So much discouragement from the actual Koreans here, so much anticipation from the rest... well I guess we (Koreans) know how hard it is to teach the language on a serious manner. I mean, it's easy teaching a few pick-up lines and quick swear words for fun, but I was never able to teach one friend anything more than that.
I'm in full support of this initiative. As long as you get a few shows on air and people listen to it, I'm sure it'll leave some positive impact at the least.

Yea, I still have hope that I can do this. I'm going to use all the Korean experiences I've had via Korean classes I took in college as well as mixing it up with real life situation (living with Korean family and parents only speaking Korean to you) to make up a simple class. I'll start with a pilot beginners series of like 5-10 episodes and then move on from there. That's why, in case bad things happen and all, I would only have cheap equipment so no worries. If the show becomes a huge success, I'll upgrade my equipment 2-3 levels up...

Erm, goodluck. Korean is a pretty tricky language to be able to speak if you're only coming from an english background. But I guess it would be cool to have more korean speakers on TL.
Totally unrelated but QS, didn't you like quit TL or something? I looked through your blogs but I couldn't find it

Hmm I might follow this, was looking for some resources on learning Korean a few days ago actually. I was getting really into it because I learned the alphabet in a few hours since it's really easy, but the excitement went away pretty quick once I realized how hard it was to find free resources on the internet that actually explains things well.
