Well I leave for basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia on Sept 1st. I gotta say I'm a bit nervous and a little excited.

Is there anyone who is going into service like me?

You don't have to worry about that now. You'll probably spend more time laughing than being intimidated. I'm not sure if they're still doing this, but when I was in the Marines both the Army and Air Force had "stress cards" that recruits could use if they were feeling too stressed out and the DS/TI would have to leave them alone. Pretty pathetic, really.

What's your job going to be?

Also, instructors that shove or hit recruits routinely have their careers ruined. They'll be more scared of you than you are of them. You may already be mature enough on your own, but rest assured that this situation will ensure that many of your peers will remain disrespectful, undisciplined tools and learn absolutely nothing from an experience that was originally designed to change them into something better.

Best of luck, but why would you want to join the army? :S

Try not to enjoy it too much. The military is fundamentally a discipline surrounding killing and destruction (kind of like Starcraft? ).

Joining the Army is not the best way to prove to anyone that you're not a sissy.

lol. I plan on joining the Canadian military next year hopefully.. Was going to this year, but the only two positions I wanted were filled =[

I really want to get in as a Musician.. been working my ass off and think im ready, just gotta wait for next audition round in like June 2011 =/ The bitch, is that if I try for musician and dont make it (which is kinda likely, theres not many slots available) then I usually miss out on the other occupation I want, which gets filled up by like early may. Hmmm.

But musician in Military is like my dream (realistic) job right now.

Good luck getting your desired MOS, unless you want to go for infantry. My brother is in the Marines, and literally all the decent jobs have been taken. Only MOS that was open was aviation positions, which have plenty of requirements... or just stick to infantry because thats always open.

benning is pretty much infantry-only right? the weather's gonna suck; heard it's really humid there around this time, plus once you hit your FTX it's gonna be winter and damn cold.

Ft. Benning? Oh my airborn infantry eh? You'll defiantly have some fun there. Have you done any JROTC or are you just coming in as enlistment?

If you're going through JROTC/ROTC, you have nothing really to worry about as im sure if you went through the 4 year program you already have a good sense what to expect and anything you read here will be nothing more than words of encouragement.

If you're going in as enlistment.. Heh nothing you read here will prep you for that. Gas chamber comes to mind instantly , not something you can relate to until you actually do it.

Just remember to keep your head down, rifle aiming to the sky and dont be cocky. You'll be bunking, eating and shiting with everyone around you for 9 weeks. Mind as well make it enjoyable as possible.. all things considered.

Oh, and about those pussy (stress) cards. Dont use it. Like, ever. You'll lose any dignity you have with your peers in that single move.

yah stress cards are retarded. drink lots of water too so you don't become a heat stroke casualty; once they're always going to baby you and that's the last thing you want a drill sergeant doing

I just got out of AIT at fort leonard wood about 3 months ago, and basic wasn't too terrible. None of the stress card bullshit, just be prepared to get the shit smoked out of you. Energizers advice is solid. Just do what you're told and you'll get through it easy. And stay away from contraband. My company set a record a leonard wood by getting 43 article 15s in a day.

I grew up in Columbus Georgia. If it's still warm by the time you get here, be prepared for mosquitoes. General tips are to eat as much food as they will give you and stay hydrated especially if you're not used to the southern humidity. Growing up with a drill sergeant from Benning the best advice I can give is eyes forward, mouth shut, and keep your answers like your hair, short and precise. Don't try to be a basic training hero either, they'll just demand more out of you until you're brought down to the level of everyone else.

Good Luck.

Lol about those stress cards. It doesn't exist just a hoax, well at least in the Army's Infantry school. Stop spreading BS stuff in the Internet if you don't have the facts, pretty simple.

Also about that drill sergeants hitting you.. They can and will get away with it during live-fire training exercises as they are authorized to protect you and people around you. Just don't point your weapon to anyone, and you should be okay.

Only advice I got to OP is to try renegotiate your contract prior to shipping out to get airborne. If your recruiter says it's impossible, tell him to stop bullshitting as I was able to. Don't be afraid to hurt his feelings as that will be your final right you have as a civilian until your contract ends. Fight for it; it'll be worth it.

I went through all that pipeline in 08 so things shouldn't have changed much.

The stress cards rumor started from a card that the Navy used to hand out in their boot camp. It was never a card that actually meant that Drill sergeant had to stop whatever was stressing you, it just had a list of resources that a recruit could use if they were stressed about being in boot camp. Story goes that some recruits would hold up the card during strenuous training, not actually expecting it to stop because they held a card up.

MICO @ 75th? How the fuck do you go to sapper school as an analyst/interrogator? Unless you're fucking lying, in which case I'm not too surprised because you can be anything you want behind a computer screen. What school class # / months did you go through? And while we're at it, what RIP class?

I'm a batt boy up at 2/75 in WA. I'm not sure what it is with the military, but you can't ever get a straight answer out of anybody. All you ever get is excuses, gross exaggerations, or outright lies, and this thread is a perfect example. This entire thread is filled with misinformation, with the exceptions of posts by starlight, badwithnames, and d_so.

I did the whole infantry route you're about to do early to mid 2007. Like somebody else had mentioned, I'd recommend you try and scavenge yourself airborne school and (if you're totally committed and physically prepared) Ranger option while in basic (it's probably too late by now).

If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to ask.

Bobo sir relax, even rangers need intel. I was "drafted' persay during AIT for what they called a quickstart ranger program. basically what you do to qualify is go through the school with a 100% in the classroom, have over a 300 pt score, and have shown excellence or whatever during your time there. from AIT i went pretty much straight to airborne and then a quickstart ranger program as i stated above. right after i finished both the schools, i was attached to a unit in afghanistan for 5 months. and for the sapper thing, that too was a rapid start program that my unit offered to anybody, it wasnt the REAL sapper school but it was basically the same thing in a few weeks less of training. we would've been certified sappers.
