Sony MDR-V6's hands down if you can get them at the $35 refurb price. Otherwise, $70 is still an excellent price for these cans. They're much better on everything (including bass) than my Sennheiser HD280 Pros.

hey all you audiophiles out there,

want to ask a question

once i was really stoned in sweden and i walked into a 'design'-y store and they had ipods and different headpones so i tried a bunch on and listened to music because music when high is the SHIT.

so i put on a pair of black AKG headphnoes oh goood the bass was so clear everything soudned so godamn crystal clear> _______<

thoughts on AKG?

Audio Technica AD700 easily.

You could look around http://www.head-fi.org, it's a forum for audiophiles and headphone experts. Just search around or make a thread and you'll get a great recommendation.

It is a well-known, high quality, and expensive, albeit, solid brand. Their best headphones need an amp though. And yes, they are known for their clarity. 701s.

To the OP: I don't think you'll realize this but studio-quality headphones or accurate headphones are not necessarily the best for casual listeners/music lovers. In some ways it can be better to have a more fun slant on things ... meaning for the headphones to color the sound in a certain way. Many headphone brands/makers are known for their particular sound signature. So really, you might be wrong if you think that studio headphones will be the best for you. I'm convinced after going through many headphones (I like IEMs and earbuds moreso than the big cans since they're so portable), that it is near impossible for online reviewers to give that accurate of a recommendation for others since music is so subjective. Unless you've actually tried and listened to music using different headphones, you really won't have any idea as to how different they sound.

AKG is a good brand. for you evan, the AKGk81dj is a really good entry level headphone. its closed too! (doesn't leak sound, isolates sound)

The Sony MDR-V6s are also pretty good. At the refurb 35 they are seriously a steal; very neutral headphones. the akg's are a little bit more warm and bassy

I have a pair of Koss UR-20's, which I use for gaming and for my guitar. They are quite good, and yet only $20. I was confused, but I love them.

Sennheiser 555's at $100 (shipped) are a hard deal to beat

They aren't black, but they are quite sturdy (my friend had a habit of throwing his around his room when he lost a counterstrike match, and they always took their beating well)

I do plan to produce music at some point (after I get my electric guitar hehe), and granted, I might not be good enough to warrant a studio earphone for that purpose (probably a earbud will be sufficient for my level) but it is good to know that it is capable.
