Myself and a friend are interested in duking it out playing a variety of multiplayer games and see who's the better overall gamer.

We need suggestions on what games we should have our skills tested on.

They have to be competitive 1v1 games.

Starcraft is the obvious one but are there any other definite games?

EDIT: I thought I'd add that the platforms we have available are PC, PS3, Wii and XBOX360, that's it unfortunately

Age of Empires 2 for sure, and pong???

Pokemon

-All generation 4 games allowed.
-No hacking.
-No need to train, use auto lvl 100 (still EV train though...)
-Pokewalker and generation 3 help allowed.
-Each get the game for 1 month.
-Then play a best of 5 with:
1x Uber battle
2x OU
1x UU
1x NU

Depends on how lucky you get with breeding IVs a little bit, but the better gamer should win.
O yeah, Jirachi available on wifi right now.

You need representation across genres, so here are some options:

2D Fighting -- Super Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core
3D Fighting -- Tekken 6, Virtua Fighter 5
Versus 2D shooter -- Twinkle Star Sprites, Senko no Ronde (not sure if you should separate versus Gundam and Virtual On from these...)
Versus puzzle -- Magical Drop 3, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
Racing -- Super Mario Kart
"sports" game -- Windjammers, Super Tennis

I'm not going to comment on a 1v1 FPS, but I'm sure someone else has better ideas.

Just check your list

RTS
FPS
fighter
tennis
racing

are the big genres for me. I would recommend

SC
CS
SmashBros
Virtual tennis
Motor storm (unbalanced though, plenty of other games if you want a fair test)

you should absolutely do different input types too, like games with wiimote and old games that have to be played with a joystick. its an entirely different skill to be good with shitty controls.

You've got at ps3, so you might like to go for soul calibur 4
Or ninja gaiden (available on xbox 360 and ps3), while its not a 1v1 game, you can compete by trying to makes the best scores during the missions

Also quake 3 / unreal tournament are great for 1v1

Tetris endurance, definitely!

Definitely a racing game, I find Super Mario Kart is a little bit too luck based, unless you do the solo mode and compare times. I think Gran Tourismo would be good.

Quake for sure.

Watch out if you're talking about my bro man, he might have lost his touch, but I have a feeling he might still have an edge on you in twitch-based shooters!

He's also devilish cunning in Tekken.

Edit: I forgot to add! Earth 2150 would be an interesting strategy change of pace

Tetris Attack!

Or it's clone that doesn't require an SNES emulator, Crack Attack.
Though I wonder whether a game between 2 unexperienced players will be as epic as one between 2 pros.

EDIT: Tetris Attack is NOT like Tetris. Though it looks a bit similar at first.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

As others have said already: In terms of shooters you have to play UT Classic and Quake Live. Those are the best for 1v1. CS is obviously a good game, but not suited for 1v1.

For heads-up, these are all you really need:

SCBW
Street Fighter III: 3rd strike
Quake (live/3)
Tetris(friends.com?)

The best of the respective three major competitive genres (RTS, Fighters and FPS), with some retro thrown in for good measure.

Smash Melee, Brood War, Counterstrike 1.6, some form of competitive Tetris, and a 800+ apm rhythm game should make a fun and challenging line-up.

Problem about competitions like this is that if you've both gamed with each other for a long time, you'll have a good idea of what games you guys play and how skilled you both are at them. So making a fair and entertaining line-up will be difficult, because for any particular game you may have a good idea of who is going to win before-hand.

Then again you can always choose games that both of you are complete neophytes at, but some people prefer competing in practiced skills.
