SEOUL (AFP) – A South Korean court on Friday sentenced an Internet addict to 20 years in prison for killing his mother after she criticised his online gaming habit.

The 22-year-old was arrested in February on charges of clubbing his 53-year-old mother to death at her home.

Prosecutors had sought the death sentence.

In March a 32-year-old man died after playing on the Internet for five days with few breaks. A similar incident was reported involving a 28-year-old man in 2005.

There are sick people out there, just cause they play video games AND are mentally disturbed doesn't mean videogames are to blame.

Typical media behavior blaming it on gamers who wouldn't physically hurt anyone.

First the article describes what happened (fine). Then the article says: "In March a 32-year-old man died after playing on the Internet for five days with few breaks. A similar incident was reported involving a 28-year-old man in 2005."

What the hell does this have to do with the story? It is so sensationalist it's infuriating.

Here let me try reporting on something.

(Seoul, South Korea) Yesterday morning at about 11am two college students attending Chobo Academy were beaten to death by an an escaped South Korean convict on a train. Also note that many people were clubbed to death in North Korea in 2009.

the prosecution went for the death penalty ? Id imagine that anyone who does something like this over games is mentally unstable and should be locked up in a mental institution, not jailed.

The title of the article is misleading. They're using the clubbing death as proof that gaming addiction in South Korea is a problem. As further evidence, they cite the deaths of the two individuals who died on gaming binges and the two parents who left their child die to raise a virtual one. It's really all a front to say "South Korea has announced tougher rules to combat Internet gaming addiction.". Honestly, this would have been a MUCH more helpful title.

Why are they targeting gamers all of a sudden. The guy was obviously a lunatic if he would kill his own mother. The people who died from gaming are the outliers that had no self control.

I don't see the problem with the article mentioning other deaths involving video games, they are somewhat related to eachother and directly related to the part of the article that mentions intervention in the form of fatigue systems to stop people from going crazy over video games, whether or not they were "clearly crazy before" as the TL psychologists can determine from reading a 300 word article and the video game just pushed them over the edge or whether playing video games obsessively had some adverse impact on their sense of reality.

I think I'm at a point where people who rush to the defense of video games bug me more than sensational articles claiming they are the devil, which this one really isn't by the way.

TBH if there are only 2 cases on record of people who've managed to kill themselves whilst gaming, respective to the rest of the world that makes it pretty damn safe.

I notice that in Japanese newspapers as well. They try to connect related incidents at the end of the article. More often than not, those incidents are hardly related in any way except for a slight similarity.

An article providing an update on the legal status of a court case involving a 22 year old person who killed his mother is not the proper venue for linking this case to those of one or two people who died during gaming marathons. I don't see anything wrong with criticizing this article for that and it doesn't make us people who rush to the defense of video games.

If they released an editorial talking about how it seems that gaming addiction in SK is causing lots of problems with people such as killing mothers who criticize their internet addiction or playing games on marathons which could possibly lead to their death (microscopic chances apparently) then any one of us TLers would be rushing to defend videogames if we just blatantly discredited the editorial rather than discussing the issue. Note that this has not happened in this thread.

A small handful of people have gaming related causes of death over the coure of five or so years, and the media loses their shit. Buckets of people die everyday from things as mundane and accepted as alcohol and saturated fat, and it's an "oh well, people make their choices" kinda of thing (unless it's drunk driving, then we'll campaign in the middle-schools...where everyone is 13...and oh yeah, in my state, you can get 7 dui's before you have to lose your liscence)

Angry nerd rants aside, having been moved out for a couple years and having had some time to reflect on the things my parents (who are good, balanced, supportive people) said about gaming, I'd say that a lot of parents are want to find gaming's dark underbelly, with out stopping to wonder whether it is there at all. Perfectly sensible and balanced people who are not normally rash or propaganda driven will eat up anything they hear that reinforces the idea that video games are for losers and nut jobs so they can feel vindicated when they force their kids to do whatever they found entertaining as a kid. So the media prints it cause it draws a lot of attention. I had a friend in high school who couldn't play wow because his parents had heard the story about the gamers who killed their kid by leaving it in the car for three days or whatever.

Of course, that being said, wow is the face of evil :S

I started playing video-games cause I grew 6 inches one summer and no longer had the coordination to play basket-ball lol.

Let me rewrite that article:

Mom talked and died soon after. Evidents points a relationship between her talk and her death. It is also known that manny ppl have talked and died afterwards, thus its dangerous to talk and governments should bring up regulations to reduce the talkings that is going on in our society.

some of you guys just dont understand news stories

"angry kid kills mom" compared to

"angry kid kills mom after her bitching about his gaming habits (games kill)"

lets face it, the latter is more interesting and gets people to read. ~_~!
