I'm pretty much looking for some help from someone whose got some experience with mixing music. Im looking for a program thats good for first time users. My music genre of choice is rap, and I wanted to put verses from artists onto different beats. Mainly artists that never collab with each other and that I think they would sound good together. I took an audio class and tried working with Pro Tools and a couple of other programs whose name I cant remember but the knowledge I got about the programs has faded away... I know its super detailed and is very advanced but I was hoping there was an easier way haha. Or at least something that I could read about and try to teach myself, because stuff like Pro Tools is fucking hard to try to learn without instruction. But in the end Im just interested in music and seeing what I can find out from my fellow Tl'ers

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is free and easy to use if you just want to line up some tracks and tweak volume.

Do you have a capella versions of the vocals you want to use? Gonna be tough otherwise.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Yeah removing the beat from a song is nearly impossible unless you're awesome at audio engineering and even then the end result is far from perfect.

Other than that Audacity is good for simple tasks.

Can't help you there. A quick google shows some online communities dedicated to a cappellas though. Will be interested to hear what you find and make.

Give Audacity a try, with the Voicetrap plugin.

All this is usually very hard to do without having an acapella version, as stated above.
Most amateur methods try to capitalize on the fact that vocals are often mixed to the middle of the channels in popular music, hence removing all the parts that are not common to the left and right channels leaves you with the vocals. (You can do that manually too in Audacity, seperating the channels, subtract one from the other (invert one then merge), then subtract the result from the original)
But there are a thousand places where this can go wrong, and produce no valuable results whatsoever. The Voicetrap plugin presumably uses some more sophisticated algorithms, might be worth a download, though I never tried it myself.

Cool trick about the invert one then merge! Tx, didn't think of it that way.

I recently obtained Cubase LE 4. Expensive equipment, really, but overall pretty easy to use. Most of the program is pretty self explanatory, and for the more advanced things there are a plethora of tutorials found all over the internet.
Only took me about a week of toying around to be able to use it efficiently.

Hey, nice to see some fellow music makers in TL. I'm an Ableton user and its pretty fluid. I make Ambient DnB and a little bit of house. Trying to work my way into some other stuff.

Audacity is a great program to learn with. Simple and pretty basic.

As for acapellas, that site might help you a bit. I use acapellas from there but not all of them are guaranteed to be perfect because most are DIY. There are quite a few gems in there though that will be clean and sound perfect.

I do my mixing on Adobe Audition. Its not as professional as Pro Tools but I think for your purposes its more than good enough. I agree with what others are saying about extracting the vocals (or any single instrument for that matter) from a song -- its quite hard and the sound quality can be crappy.

But if you have access to the vocal track somehow, then mixing is with beats is pretty straightforward.

Try some DJ software like Traktor (quite expensive) or Mixxx (free). Those programs are more geared towards live performance, but they are certainly capable of performing the tasks you need.

Otherwise, if you want to go the DAW route, Ableton would definitely be a good choice as it has very good bpm-detection built-in.

a lot of professionals use programs such as Cubase, Ableton, Logic Express and Pro Tools.

from what i heard, pro tools and cubase are the industry standard even though pro tools is fucking confusing as hell, it's what is usually used in studios that teach professional mixing

off the top of my head, timbaland uses pro tools

*edit* but like you said, pro tools is difficult..

if you like rap and wanna start mixing beats and stuff, i really suggest Cubase or FL studio

boi-1da who made beats for eminem drake pretty much sticks to his keyboard and fruity loops.

from there, you can download different VSTs which are really compatible with FL studio and cubase (since they invented it)

for example, Nexus is a crazy awesome VST (virtual studio technology)

and the best thing about FL studio and cubase is that there are many.. many videos teaching you how to use and experiment with different stuff on youtube

FL studio has the most tutorials though. there are even like series of videos that teach you not only how to mix music but like properly sequence them and everything so it turns out professional

Pro Tools is pretty complicated software to learn by yourself and is more or less designed for massive studio use, so unless you plan on creating your own you might want to consider other DAWs if you don't already have it

I hear Cubase is pretty good for pure audio work as well, though I haven't tried it myself

FL studio is pretty solid for beginners and good for composing off a piano roll or making beats, though it's not as good to get things to sound "professional"

choosing a DAW is more about figuring out if the software works in a way that's conducive to how you plan on making your music; for the most part I would just try out the demo for something easy like FL studio and worry about getting better software later
once, not long ago, there was a moon here

I personally believe ableton to be the best product for what you've described in the OP, but it is expensive. Maybe you can steal it? ^_^

Yeah i learned a whole year of Pro tools (and by learned i meaned i ignored my boring instruction and played around on pro tools for a 5 hour class 3 times a week) . I got to a point after asking people around who could use it to be able to make simple shitty beats, but again i dont remember how.. But I have tried FL studio ahwile ago but I couldnt figure that out for shittttt, and cant you not import sound to it?
