I've come to the crushing realization over the past few years that the name Ghen just isn't as unique as it was 15 years ago. A google search on the name brings up a string of results from Ghen War a Sega Saturn game, G.H.E.N. the Gender and Health Equity Network, Gehn a character in Riven, to just a bunch of random people who's last name is Ghen.
When I created my name I was 14 and just got my first computer. I wanted something unique and yet short. Easy to remember but not necessarily easy to say. A perfect fit for the internet. So I signed up with AOL with the name. AOL was version 2.5 back then and came on a floppy (or was it 2 floppies?) lol. I've loved and cherished the name from website to website and game to game. Each time I play an RPG for example I rename the main character (unless it's Link <3).
It's been a part of my life for so long that even though I know I must change to stay unique it is hard to part with such a succinct identifier. What it comes down to though is even though its such a strange combination of characters, I find myself having to add numbers or X's to the end just to make a user name. The straw that broke the camels back is League of Legends. Its a free game that anyone can create a name for sure, but still its not that well known and hasn't been out that long! Yet, Ghen is taken. It was just so disheartening to have the registration server shoot me down that I've decided to change my identity online for the first time ever.
I have yet to find a name that will last me another 15 years. I'm trying to find something short or has a nice nickname, sounds masculine, and is above all unique. The wracking of brain muscle continues...

Just the sheer amount of people picking nicks makes it kinda impossible to find names that are both unique and short at the same time. Not to mention masculine ones, whatever that means :-p
(here's an experiment for you: press 4 random keys on your keyboard, and make a google search for that. Chances are you'll have several hits.)
I think you should just stick to Ghen, and get used to the fact that you're not the only one.

been using "methos" since i was 8 years old. and i occasionally see other people use it nowadays and i get mad sometimes cuz they took my name. lol.

When I first got gmail I was incredibly dismayed that "panorama@gmail.com" was taken. I was contemplating writing him an angry e-mail.

Mine is unique, with a few variations that are a couple letters off belonging to some people. Being unique isn't always the best thing though, it makes it really easy for someone to look up everything you've posted. D:

My username is just my firstname but with a random made up word at the end that adds manliness lol, and no one has the same name  . But I like having different names as well, for example I've switched it up in SC2, as I now go buy the name Petrel. As they are the coolest birds ever, and having a bird name is awesome, partly cause I love Stork.

That is a good point. One thing I didn't mention in my original post is my name is irrevocably tied to my real life identity across a few sites. I've deleted the worst offenders but still best to keep anonymity where I can.

Pretty much just falls to not creating names ending in A or Y which creates an overwhelming feminine sound and people would mistake me for a girl which I just don't need on the internet  (I don't know how girls deal with all the stupid attention)

It's not that bad though, because it shortens to just Darth as a nick name which is always cool considering star wars characters. I'm not adverse to going this route either, finding a short name I like and adding a second or third syllable to make it unique.

Mine is fairly unique. I think there's only one other guy who takes it, and I think he's in asia, somewhere.
Other than that, I get a black goat when I google image my name :/

The only way to be unique is to put two things together. Obviously 'micronesia' is taken by people other than me sometimes as is 'acg' but 'microacg' isn't etc

:D people in the mafia thread started shortening it to both Darth and DTA lol. Darth reads better, but hey, DTA is cool too.

Just stick with your nickname. If you like it, it doesn't matter if a few other people use it. No one really cares about other people's names, so just go with what you like.

In my eyes, history is more important than being 'unique.' Chances are your real life name isn't that unique in a world with 7 billion people and counting. Stick with it!
(Or make spoofs)
