Not trying to be a troll or anything, but I'm always confused as to the fuss over the worldcup. My dad: Never watches soccer or speaks of it, but suddenly when Worldcup is on, he starts watching it religiously. My friend: Hates soccer, finds it boring, yet checks in constantly to the scores.
(Choose primary reason)
Poll: Why do you watch the world cupLove watching Soccer (108) 44% Don't watch it (79) 32% Pride for my nation (34) 14% B/c everyone else is doing it. Where is the "I don't watch soccer" option?
|
i watched EPL, La Liga and just football in general on a regular basis for the past 3 or so years.. so
this is actually the first World Cup i'm watching "religiously" so to speak haha. it's fun to watch for sure especially with friends!
|
I love watching football and pride for my nation
|
its kinda like the olympics. no one REALLY watches those sports. but its the best of the best and only once in 4 years. should be worth watching right?
|
I don't watch soccer ever, but the world cup is fun because its kindof like a mini world war and you get to root for your country.
|
The short of it is that people who watch tv are bored and waiting for something new and sexy to kill time.
|
Wait. You realize you are posting this on a forum dedicated to watching random asian kids play a video game at 2-4 AM in the morning. And you are complaining about people watching the most popular sport in the world? Seriously?
All forms of sport and competition are fun to watch at the highest levels of competition. Football is no exception, and it's pretty fun to watch high level teams with great teamplay and country pride on the line.

Based on your poll you believe there are two possible reasons why people like your dad are watching:
1) pride for nation 2) because everyone else is doing it
... but I really think there are other reasons some people would do it besides those two...
|
It is really cool to see the whole world coming together for this event. Different playstyles from different countries, friendly people from all over the world having fun together, 600 players fighting for the most prestigious soccer trophy in the world.
That is what makes it great for me .
And fuck this national pride thing.. I find the sudden mass of german flags repulsive..

This! Exactly, I appreciate most sports in the world, except for curling which I dont get..

World Cup and Euro Cup games are the only thing who matters when it comes down to soccer. Forget about the Champions League, Calcio, Liga etc ... Winning a Champion League makes you a great player but when you win a World Cup you become a legend.
I don't really care about soccer until the final stages of WC / EC because the amount of hype is unrivaled in any other sport.
+ watching national teams is better than clubs and their mercenaries. I really don't know how people can be fans of clubs when squads are changing each years for $$$. I feel no connection at all with clubs.
|
For World Cup Liquibet so I get a nice icon when I win.
|
For a lot of people in the US, people watch the World Cup because it conveniently falls into the "blackout" period for the popular American sports. The NBA Finals will be over shortly, NHL Championship just finished, baseball is in the middle/boring part of the season, and college football/the NFL haven't started yet.
Personally, the World Cup is the only soccer I watch, but I enjoy it quite a bit!
|
I actually don't watch the World Cup, since I am not a fan of sports. That said, I do have a passing interest in it simply due to how major of a spectacle it is and I might watch a game or two for a few minutes.
Simply put, when there is a football frenzy, it is kind of hard not to be a bit curious about it.
|
Most of the people who only watch the sport when the WC is on do it because it is easy to follow and has a lot of other people following it too. If you compare it with a whole season of football over a year, it is drawn out and potentially boring but a WC compresses the whole fun into four weeks of sheer awesomeness, excitement and cultural belonging. Thus, a WC is a great way to be entertained.
|
I don't like playing soccer, and I don't watch regular soccer. I say I'm not going to watch the World Cup and I end up watching some. I think I watch it just for the intense competition.
|
WC is the most awsome thing to happen. I do watch football regularly and I look foward to World Cup for 4 FKING YEARS. Plus Chile is in it for 2nd time since i'm alive, so I'm counting every 2nd till this wednesday when we play.
|
you know how most sports have an all-star game halfway through the season where all the best players go against eachother? the world cup is basically like 7-8 all-star teams and a bunch more really good teams playing against each other. i don't watch soccer normally, especially with the random times of european matches in my time zone, but for world cup there's a game every day at 7am and 2pm, so it's really funt o watch. i also have some friends from Holland who moved here a few years ago, and it's fun to watch with actual european fans. european soccer fans are crazy fanatical about their national teams
edit: also the TL world cup section has lots of activity, you basically just chill with people like ret, infernal, naruto, and twisted talking about WC instead of SC
|
World Cup just brings everyone together. I remember when Ivory Coast qualified for their first World Cup and there was a civil war going on in that country. Didier Drogba asked for the civil war to be stopped even just for the duration of the tourney and it did.

Cos football is amazing
And football is kind of a big deal in the creator of the sport!
|
The biggest event in the greatest sport in the world. Nuff said.
|
I must be the most clueless person on the planet when it comes to World Cup or any other football related events for that matter. And many people in my country go batshit insane for football, too.
I find the sport itself excruciatingly boring.
Also, it's only SOCCER in the US -.- : + Show Spoiler +
|
I can't affiliate with the hype around soccer either. I think the sport itself is rather boring (compared to good esport for example). The soccer fans are extremely annoying and stuff like hooligans are just causing trouble for no reason. The emerging patriotism and national pride is just stupid. And the fact that it's so popular makes it even worse. The biggest reason for all that hype I guess is just the social aspect of watching it together and having the team of your country to cheer for. Following this huge event and getting in touch with so many people who share the same passion for that sport. I can understand why people like it but I don't like or watch it at all.
|
i only watch the Euro and World cup, everything else I could care less about. But when those come on, they beat any other sport on television for me.
i guess that makes me a poser =/
|
i live in Hockey nation, but soccer is by far my 2nd favorite sport..i watch every (World Cup + Euro) competitions ^_^
i'd also follow the EPL or Bundesliga or La liga...or Serie A but its kinda hard in North America unless youre spending $900 per month on TV channels... kek...and streams arent good enough in quality...blehh...
i'd really love to follow Barca and Messi tho..if i could T_T (if anyones knows a cheap way to do that in Canada..lemme know)
|
Besides it being the biggest sporting event in the world, soccer is just fun to watch. It's incredibly simple to understand, and you get to root for your home country
Personally, I watch the world cup because... I follow Euro soccer anyways... :D
EDIT: I'm reading all these other posts where people say "football" and not "soccer" ... ... damn you America, what have you done.

Your poll is missing the option: "To have a reason for drinking"

I like rooting for my country. I love worldwide competitions like the olympics, world cup, etc.

Because the World Cup is so much more than just soccer. It brings nations together and is about national pride.

Best thing about 7:30 AM matches: BEER FOR BREAKFAST

Why the hell do people think it's god damn clever to say... "It's not called Soccer". Who gives a fuck. You get the message he is trying to get across. Don't turn this into a god damn youtube video comment section where half of soccer/football videos turn into an argument about why it's called football or soccer. Whenever you do this sidetracks the topic and lessens any real discussion. TL is better than this.

Just to answer.. If you don't understand The World Cup, you never will
|
I love watching football, especially world class teams.
|
I love watching football and the US team is my favorite sporting team in the world

Why do you watch jaedong vs flash OSL finals?

I'm just quoting this again because it's an awesome post.
As for myself, I watch the World Cup because it's... the World Cup. There really isn't a comparable event on Planet Earth in terms of scope and hype. Professional league play may be slightly better, but just slightly, and the World Cup adds national pride and bragging rights into the mix.
Plus, it's my sport. I play soccer (when I was younger, on a team, now whenever I can). I ref soccer. In the fall, I'll probably be coaching in a youth league. The World Cup is the biggest competition in my sport, which is arguably the greatest in the world - of course I'm going to watch it.

I only watch it cuz of after-effects from 2002 korea run. World Cup is where it's at right now

The World Cup is an event that only comes around every four years and is every soccer player's dream to win due to the fact that you are representing your homeland. The dedication and pride shown by both the teams and the fans is unequaled(read: soccer riots).
For me, watching athletes do stuff I couldn't do to save my life, pushing themselves to the limit physically, all while tens of thousands scream and sing for their country to win the greatest achievement for their soccer team - that is what I love.
People tend to forget that while soccer is insane tricks and moves, they are also just straight up RUNNING for 90 minutes, it's the hardest shit in the world.

World Cup... I don't watch soccer (football), nor know anything about it. I watch the occasional game because it is good for conversational material. Also, it seems like everyone else is doing it. It's more for social interaction rather than personal enjoyment. The enjoyment of a bunch of people screaming GOAL is really fun. I guess I watch it for the fans, not for the game.
|
I like to follow the results and I'd watch Australia if they get past the group stages but otherwise I don't much bother with it.
|
i actually have never watched world cup b4 even though i love the sport and play a ton of it myself. The reason for this is because ive never watched any tv regularly and dont know much about the various competitions. That being said, now would be a great time to start. Can anyone direct me to some online streams for the World Cup ? And what time does it play usually?
|
I will watch anything played on an international scale tbh. Even things I have almost no understanding of. I personally don't really find the standard league of any sport very interesting because of all the trading that goes on and how I don't feel that they're really very tied to their city or team other than the fact that they live there and get paid there. But when it comes to the international stage, the battle between different national teams is always fun to watch.

oh look another kdog blog
i wonder how this will end

I like it because I like sports. I like the competition and I like the competition between nations.

It's all about nationalism! Pride for your country
|
I will be singing the Italian national anthem even though I do not know a word of Italian. Don't ask me why I am doing this, that's the magic of sports
|
I like the constant drone of angry bees when watching the games that destroys all atmosphere possible.
|
I love soccer and this is the most accessible time for the game ever! HD soccer is the shit.
although the ability to say terrible things about residents of other countries that would normally be considered racist/xenophobic is fun too!!!
|
I don't normally watch soccer, but I almost never miss world cup and eurocup because they are simply the highest level of competition and countries actually give a shit about these events (unlike Olympics...)
It's just great competition and atmosphere.
