I was wondering what bands you would suggest to someone who loves Trivium/Protest The Hero/Dream Theater, and tolerates Children of Bodom. (Their guitar riffs get pretty generic, and their lyrics are sub par)

This is what I'm looking for:

Highly technical guitar riffs
Highly Technical drum lines
Clean Singing OR tasteful screaming (Unearth/All That Remains/Lamb Of Gods/Killswitch Engaged screams and growls sound awful)
Strong sense of melody throughout while maintaining technicality.
Meaningful/interesting lyrics. (Nothing cliche' like Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Tide, or Bullet for My Valentine)
Face melting solos.
Thrash Influence
Melodic Deathmetal Influence
Progressive Metal Influence
New (formed within the last 10 years)

Examples of bad lyrics:

Waking The Demon by Bullet For My Valentine

+ Show Spoiler +
Helpless, my eyes are bleeding
From the fear that's inside
You sealed your demise
When you took what was mine

Don't try to stop me
From avenging this world
No voice to be heard

Waking the demon
Where'd you run to
Walking in shadows
Watch the blood flow

There's not much longer
So don't try to fight
Your bodies weakening
Walk to the light

Those painful times
So alone so ashamed
I'm not coming back
There's nothing to gain

Caution there's just no limits
To the boundaries you push
I warned you but still you just
Fuck with my mind

There's no escape from
This rage that I feel
Nothing is real

Waking the demon
Where'd you run to
Walking in shadows
Watch the blood flow

There's not much longer
So don't try to fight
Your bodies weakening
Walk to the light

Those painful times
So alone so ashamed
I'm not coming back
There's nothing to gain

Breathe for me
Don't wake me from this slumber
Stay with me
Possession taking over

Breathe for me
Don't wake me from this slumber
Stay with me
Possession taking over

Breathe for me
Don't wake me from this slumber
Stay with me
Possession taking over

Breathe for me
Don't wake me from this slumber
Stay with me
Possession taking over

Waking the demon

Example of Good Lyrics:

Kirisute Gomen By Trivium

+ Show Spoiler +
He who walks the fire breathes

He who walks the fire breathes
unlike the rest
living by the bloody creed
Kirisute Gomen

Air of battle tasting stale
reeks of deceit
send the bitter straight to hell
Kirisute Gomen

In their wretched guts all they want is to feed
unending, covetous hunger known as greed
as the last legion makes it's way to the skies

I can see in their eyes
they've already died
inside, but as for the outside
I'll take their fucking heads

Quake has bred with the storm
conceiving war
wicked stampeding hordes
kirisute gomen

In their wretched guts all they want is to feed
unending, covetous hunger known as greed
as the last legion makes it's way to the skies

I can see in their eyes
they've already died
inside, but as for the outside
I'll take their fucking heads

I can see in their eyes
they've already died
inside, but as for the outside
I'll take their fucking heads

I will never be what they
want me to
I live by my own path in life
no turning
back now, I won't be held down
forced into a
shallow grave built upon their empty ways
there's no turning back

There's hell to pay, such disarray
a bloodied mess, flesh masquerade
with all the blood making a flood
you made your path by crossing us

(Solo)

He who spits the fire seethes
all he detests
decapitating, bloody creed
Kirisute Gomen

In their wretched guts all they want is to feed
unending, covetous hunger known as greed
as the last legion makes it's way to the skies

I can see in their eyes
they've already died
inside, but as for the outside
I'll take their fucking heads

I can see in their eyes
they've already died
inside, but as for the outside
I'll take their fucking heads

I will never be what they
want me to
I live by my own path in life
no turning
back now, I won't be held down
forced into a
shallow grave built upon their empty ways
there's no turning back

I will never be what they
want me to
I live by my own path in life
no turning
back now, I won't be held down
forced into a
shallow grave built upon their empty ways
there's no turning back

I've just been trying to branch out with my music, as I've been listening to the same three bands for about a year now (With a bit of metallica and instrumental metal bands) If anyone could point me to something great I would be really appreciative!

Dark Empire satisfies most of your stylistic requirements (solos/thrash/progressive/technical guitar riffs). It is a bit more like power metal though.

Get any band that those bands list as influences.

One question though, your using Trivium as an example of good lyricism? I vaguely remember a verse going "Stress! Breaking my back!", "Dragon!".etc. Horrible band anyways.

I love it! : D They are really good!

I've always heard that Trivium is Metalcore, but theres been debate about that, (Honestly, I think they're drastically different than most metalcore bands...they're just unique)

So I've been trying to find metalcore bands that I like, but it seems like I should be trying more power metal : P Thank you very much!

If you want prog heres my list:

Instrumental: Animals as Leaders - They are very jazzy with lots of metal. Very guitar focused and simply amazing. Songs - On Impulse, CAFO, Tempting Time, any others. Theres not a bad song by them.

Technical Death Metal: Veil of Maya - SUPER SUPER heavy prog band lots of bass drum. They don't know how to slow down the face melting and they don't stay in one time signature or one tempo for long. Songs - It's not safe to swim today, Mark the lines, We bow in it's aure, anything from The common man's collapse.

Born of Osiris - Same reasons as the previous band except they have a baller keyboard player. Not quite as good as Jordan Rudess ( Dream Theater) but still worth checking out. Songs - Empires Erased, Abstract Art, Bow Down, anything from The New Reign.

The Faceless - Just a strange middle eastern sounding heavy metal guitarist makes this band worth listening too. Really really technically interesting and great solos. Songs - Anything from Planetary Duality.

Progressive Death Metal: Between the Buried and Me - My personal favorite band. I like to think of them as the Dream Theater of death metal. They go through every style in the book and tie it together with thought provoking lyrics and an extreme sense of maturity. Selkies: The Endless Obsession, White Walls, Ants of the Sky, Alaska, Mordecai, Backwards Marathon, they don't have any bad songs really.

Also if you like Trivium, check out Anterior. They're similar to trivium but they're a little heavier, no singing and the guitar players really outshine Trivium in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

That song isn't the greatest in the lyrical sense, but Trivium uses alot of Mythological beings/Imagery/Messages in their lyrics, Its not 'whiney' which is what I'm having trouble with alot of metalcore bands now today.

The song is tread the floods:

+ Show Spoiler +
Stress,
Breaking my back,
Pulse is stuttering,
Pressure,
Mental attack,
My thoughts clattering

Beating this dead horse,
Is exhausting,
Heartbreaking,
To see my hand shaking,
I'm knee-deep,
In the dead still waiting,
Still waiting in this,
This well-called life

Nervousness halting all will
Forcing apathy
Anxiety an aching chill
Hammering down me

Beating this dead horse
Is exhausting
Heartbreaking
To see my hand shaking
I'm knee-deep in the dead
Still waiting
Still waiting in this
This well-called life

Tread the floods
So you can hope to seize
Your own reality
(Be)fore it escapes thee
Watch yourself drown in disarray
It's time to break away
Or well die today

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so thank you for yours. I used to think Trivium was horrible when everyone liked them, as I had already learned that what most people like is normally not good. (Everyone was balls deep in My Chemical Romance and Linkin' park as well, and then came Screamo.) But Trivium really stuck with me, I stopped listening to Nu-metal, realizing that it was absolute garbage. (Korn, Slipknot, Disturbed...Wtf was I thinking?) and funny enough, now I rate everything I listen to as, "Is it remotely as good as Trivium?" Theres just a combination of different things that make Trivium's songwriting special, that no other band can really replicate. Anyway, enough of my fanboyism, thank you for your comment!

Don't hate, nu-metal is bomb. What about Killswitch Engage? Also some of the older All That Remains..?

I absolutely LOVE Animals as Leaders. They just blew me away!

The next three bands, I didn't like their vocals, too much bark : P But I still loved their guitar parts.

Between The Buried and Me was GREAT until the vocals kicked in as well.

I didn't really like Anterior, too identical to Shadow's Fall IMO. (Vocals as well)

Thank you for turning me into Animals As Leaders though! : D I'm going to be listening to them for a while to come I think. ^_^

While I may not have a suggestion for you, I feel great that someone actually enjoys Trivium other than myself. I've found nothing but negativity toward them. Rock on.

Ascendancy, and yeah The Crusade was a bit off target (but it still had some good stuff, definitely Becoming the Dragon) and Shogun but them right back on track for me. When I first got Shogun I listened to it at least twice per day for a month lol

Trivium is one of the gayest bands on earth, even though their first album actually had some pretty sick solos. Matt Heafy is actually a good guitarist--its too bad he's chosen to play some of the gayest music known to man. Trivium songs have GOOD lyrics? Are you insane?

If you want some GOOD music that has all of the qualities you listed, listen to some Death.

The little Trivium i've heard borrowed heavily from Faith No More (almost directly stealing the bridge from Crack Hitler) so you might want to try them.

You'll get fantastic lyrics and melodies, various metal influences, and great musicianship. They're more tasteful then technical though.
It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.

grouping those three bands together in anyway is so painful

Try Opeth - they're the least generic band I know of. Very progressive, they switch from, for example, death metal screams with incredible guitar/drum playing to slow acoustics mid song, makes for really epic songs that are different every time (unlike CoB) that really, only Opeth can pull off. Obviously, the diversity isn't for everyone, but I can't do them justice so Youtube will:

^Opeth <3.
To OP, as one has mentioned, I think you'd like Periphery. Quite prog'ish, and some nice vocals, mixed with a really clean growl. This is their "hit" I'd say:

Really nice song imo, great guitar and vocals.
Btw, if you like this kind of music you should REALLY try to learn to appreciate growl vocals. It opens doors to so much amazing music. If you want to try to listen to growl vocals seriously, Opeth is a great start, singer has some of the most amazing growl vocals ever!
