Hi TL,
This is my first blog post so I guess I'll introduce myself first before I get onto the main point of this post.
Firstly, I'm 16 years old and live in London, UK. I've been lurking on these forums since sometime in 2008/9 but until the release of the beta I've never had anything useful to say. My interest in BW started along time ago, but I stopped playing the game sometime around 2004 ish because I got bored of it. Around 2008 I watched the WCG finals from sometime ago, and just got hooked on watching them, and I discovered the wide world of Esports from there. I've been active in the beta since April, and I'm something like 1200 points Gold after maybe 80 or so games. (If you want to add me my name's drag.europe on EU).
Anyways onto the main point of this. I've been watching SC2 streams from when the beta came out, and I watched all the battle reports, blizcon footage etc, so I feel like I've watched alot of SC2. The main impression it makes on me is that it's a little "dull" almost. This has nothing to do with the units/balance what so ever, it just looks a little more boring. To me SC2 so far looks a little bit less bright, the way shit blows up is a little more subtle (obv not nukes). You just don't seem to see clumps of hydras exploding into tiny pieces while crazy blue lighting bolts flash over them (psi storm in case my description sucked) or goliaths shooting crazy blue missiles all over the place or zerglings running around under dark swarm.
Now this isn't meant to be another "omg roach immortal marauder is sooo boring" post or anything like that because I'm not qualified to talk about something like that. As well to me the solution seems simple, Blizzard should just put more stuff in where you see it and just think "shit that looked sweet" or whatever.
Anyways, these are just my impressions and in no way do I think they're correct, I'd just like to see if anyone else had anything to say on the topic. Hope this was a good first blog post

I feel the opposite. I can't watch Brood War anymore because it looks so ugly.

Well done 2d graphics from that era don't look ugly to me at all... It has its own style and I like it. Like comparing a drawing to a painting, both can look great when done well.

This is exactly the way I feel about the way BW looks I can look at those pixilated units all day and not even think about how they are not 3d in comparison to SC2s units, I'm not sure if I will ever get tired of BWs graphics

I've always disliked how WC3 looked. I think it's really ugly, like SC2 on lowest settings.
I grew up on SNES or worse graphics though so BW looks great to me.

Hm, playing Brood War feels weird, but watching it, I think it looks as awesome as ever (probably because I'm on a widescreen so when I try to play BW it's all stretched out, which isn't the case when I try to watch it).

Hi drag, welcome to the forums!
I actually agree that certain graphics in SC/BW look way more satisfying. Psi storm and Zerg units dying are good examples, and Zerglings in SC2 just look... um... squishy. But my only real problem with SC2 is its relentless fascination with lasers and beams. Tone it down, already!
For all that, though, I think SC2 is way more eye candy than SC/BW, and I don't think it looks as dull to me as it does you. If SC2 becomes as rich and deep as SC/BW and acquires the same level of competition, I'd watch a random SC2 game over a random SC/BW game any day.

I can't help but agree with you there, when I got this new monitor I didn't expect to be playing widescreen on BW with two huge black bars on the side, it felt very unappealing.
But I must say that Blizzard has gone leaps and bounds to make Starcraft a visually arousing game to play, I can't help but notice the different uses of environment in the maps.

I have no idea how ANYONE can cay it "looks" dull. IMO one of its greatest assets are the graphics, (maybe you're not running on ultra?) You CAN CLEARLY see tiny bits of shit blowing up all over the fucking place, it's insane!
Not to mention all those cool fucking protoss lasers.
Have you ever seen a marine die to a roach? HE FUCKING MELTS IN ACID!
Have you seen a Reaper die to a Hydralisk? HIS FUCKING JETPACK EXPLODES AND HIS BODY IS VAPORIZED
I could go on and on, but I think SC2 has some of the greatest graphics of any RTS EVER
Broodwar graphics are more "antiquish" I guess, and for me, now, it looks ugly as fuck. I can't even watch it anymore.
