Don't run everyday. Set a goal for each run. Don't push yourself too much.

These are my general guidelines that have gotten me fit.

Once you get better, you'll start to notice that the first 20 minutes or so are the hardest. But after that point you get a sudden boost of energy. It makes you feel invincible.

I'm gonna suggest you train about 5k at a time, maybe 3 times a week until you can run a decent pace. There's nothing more useless than plodding along at 8mins/km for an hour and a half, and it wastes your time too.

On days when you don't run your 5k, do stair sets or swim or weight train or something.

get good shoes. make sure you find a good pace when you run. make sure you stretch, and dont over do it, that can lead to injuries (tendonitis)

I really do not have any extensive knowledge in this area, but I think this guy is full of BS. If you haven't done any running before and you try to run 5k at a decent pace you will just end up hurting yourself. 8mins/km for 3+ kms isn't "plodding along" for someone who isn't physically fit. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree with everyone who has said not to run too hard. I got good by running for 6 years, it takes time. Just run a few times a week, a couple miles at a time. walk if you have to. chances are youll hear about people who run everyday, dont do that yet. unless you are competitive, 5 days a week is the most you really need to stay in good shape, 3 days a weeks to get started is great

Most of your runs should be at a nice easy pace; from my experience the typical casual runner definitely goes harder than they need to on easy runs. If you going by heart rate somewhere between 60-70% of max HR is usually a pretty good target. If your going by effort you should be totally comfortable, and able to converse fairly well without having to gasp for air every sentence.

Start off with just a little running, maybe 2-3 miles on a 3 or 4 days of the work and gradually build up, adding another day or so every or every other week if you felt strong the previous week. Once you get to that point, then you can increase around 10% per week in terms of mileage, maybe more if it feels really good. As with anything, if you start to have big fatigue or nagging pains be sure to go ahead and take a break, running through fatigue and injury only makes it worse and the running far less enjoyable.

Picking a short race, such as a 5K, can be a great motivator to keep you true to your training. Above all, keep the running at a comfortable pace, so that the running is fun, or at the very least not uncomfortable. There is a time and place for faster workouts, but if you're just starting I would get used to running and just work on devloping a decent base.

Run instead of walk.
I run as much as I can.
I run to/from work.

In an apartment,
Use stairs instead of a lift.
Here's a useful blog.
A build is not a guess, an estimation or a hunch, a feeling, or a foolish intuition. A build is a dependable, unwavering, unarguably accurate, portrayer of your ambition.

Treat running like an endurance performance test for your body.

Stretch every muslce you can think of in your body. Get your body and mind ready for a mentally peaceful (you can even say running can be like a mental cleansing) and physically painful experience. Make the pain the peace.

Have a good diet so your body has the nutrients to perform well, then start off at a slow pace. I walk for like 5 minutes before I actually start jogging. I very slowly increase my speed till I feel like if I push myself I'm going to have to stop, so I step down a little but keep the pace. Once you realize you are running at a good pace and its not phasing you that much, kick it up just a bit and try to keep it there. Repeat till you feel like you're spent. Don't put a number of miles or a time limit, your body will tell you when you've had enough exercise. Just go and let your mind wander when you are running, think or do anything that makes you most comfortable (except stopping of course)

After jogging for a minute or so, you will be inhaling and exhaling more. Inhale through your nose with an amount of steps you feel comfortable with, then exhale in the same rythem out of your mouth. When I start off I inhale 8 steps, exhale 8 steps. Deep breaths from the diaphragm. This does wonder for your lungs over time. You will want to increase your distance over time. Try running a few times a week at least for at least a half an hour. You don't have to be running constantly for a half an hour, just push yourself for that long. Go home, eat, take a nap, and wake up feeling like a shmillion dollarz.

GL HF, go gettem tiger. I'm rootin for ya Sonnet. I hope all your posts are sonnets

I pretty muchy disagree with TimmyMac, at least from the way I think he means what he said. Running at 8min/km is totally fine if that is a decent pace for you, i.e conversational/65ish % max HR type running. This will develop aerobic capacity just fine because it is a good aerobic pace for you. Now, if you're a fit guy going out and running at 8 min/km is a waste of you're time, unless your doing some sort of recovery day or warm up. Running is all about the right intensity for you.

Plodding along is totally realtive to the person. For an elite runner like Haile Gebreselassie plodding along is sub 7:00 miles, and an easy jog is probably in the neighboorhood of 6:00 or less per mile. Then again, this is a guy who can run 26 4:40 ish miles. It's all relative to your own personal fitness level.

Yo Sonnet,
You want to run some more?
Get on it,
Run til your feet get sore.

Don't let others grind your gears,
Just be better than you were last week.
Don't compare yourself to peers,
Cuz they've got nothing on how you geek.

Find a way to make the exercise fun.
Listening to music works for me.
Find what compels you to run.
I think finding a reason is the key.

Yo Sonnet,
You want to run some more?
Get on it,
Run til you can't take anymore.

If you find you haven't exercised all day,
And if you have been devoid of motion,
You might get put into a state of dismay.
Note that fitness requires devotion.

I even run withing my own house
I like 'free running', taking an odd path
When you're sweaty, shower for a douse!
You'll be fitter over time according to my math.

So Sonnet,
You want to run some more?
GTF on it,
Until you practically soar.
The above was a song.
