I want to get some comedians on my iPod to listen to at work, but I have no idea who good comedians are. So, I'm enlisting the help of TL. I've seen some stand up on Comedy Central, but most of it I found to be trash. I generally don't watch stand up, but listening to it at work makes the time go by quicker (when I can actually listen to it.) I don't much have a preference or anything so just tell me some of your favorites and I'll look into them tonight.

Thanks!

Steven Lynch is hilarious. As is Daniel Tosh stand up (not sure about his show as I haven't watched it). If you like the angry comics, Lewis Black and Bill Hicks are fun.

Yeah, he's made some really nasty references about when he was on the show, like touching those twins in inappropiate ways :/

oh and the reason you only see trash on comedy central is because it take ZERO talent to snag a gig for that show.

the standard of quality for CCP is notoriously low.

Jim Jefferies is a funny funny guy. I loved his performance. Dane Cook is getting better with age. The last time I watched a performance from him it was VASTLY improved from his overly flashly shit when he was just a myspace phenom. He has some talent when he cares.

George Carlin was a master of comedy and social commentary. He can be quite offensive though, and some of his humour is a little raunchy.

I'm sure others have given lots of great advice and mentioned some great people, so I'll just go through comedians I listen to when I'm looking for comedy.

Bill Hicks. Decidedly not for everybody. Not even remotely "clean," but with purpose and meaning. He doesn't make me laugh as much or as hard as some others, but I'd rather listen/watch Hicks than almost anybody else.

I really like Daniel Tosh. He studied a lot of Bill Hicks (his [former?] manager was Hicks' manager, as well, so he had access to tons of material) and it shows in his style. Not his content, so much, but that may not be a bad thing.

If you haven't heard Mitch Hedberg that would be the first guy I pick stuff up from. Incredibly funny, though probably not for everybody.

George Carlin may be dead, and some of his stuff may be almost 40 years old, but he's still maybe the best ever to do the thing. AM and FM is still hilarious, and the audio portions of his HBO specials are still awesome, even without the visuals. His audiobook versions of Brain Droppings and Napalm and Silly Putty are pretty good, as well. If I had to listen to only one comedian for the rest of my life, it'd be Carlin, no considering required.

I like Bill Cosby's old stuff. Seriously. Dude was funny before he got his own show.

Bo Burnham really makes me laugh. Lots of people probably hate him, I dunno, but I love word play and I like the way he structures things.

Maria Bamford is pretty funny. Very quirky, but the routines feel pretty normal (in a good way).

Gabriel Iglesias. Goddamn this guy is funny.

Richard Pryor/Chris Rock. Grouping them together, because I think they're similar. And not just in the immediate ways. I think both had the ability to be unparalleled in their craft, if they hadn't parlayed their success into the more lucrative Hollywood work. Pryor is still considered a god, obviously, but, as much as I love Carlin (a whole lotta buncha), I think Pryor had the ability to put himself so far above everybody that comparison would be nigh impossible. I'm not sure Rock had that ability, but he could have definitely been close, I think. All the acting, I feel, has kept his stand-up from truly moving anywhere from where he was 10 years ago. Granted, that's still a hilarious and smart place, but it's no longer ground breaking or new. Rock is still one of the best in the business, but he's in the pack, not leading it now.

  • I like Chris Rock.. I don't have to think, I just laugh at 'lightweight' jokes.

  • I saw some clips of Chappelle, I didn't like him.

  • I saw some Pablo Francisco a long time ago, and I liked him.

  • I know almost no other comedians.

Demetri Martin is excellent, and definitely not a typical comedian. He dropped out of law school at NYU a year before graduating in order to pursue his comedy career (which he'll talk about in the "If I" series later stated). He also made a 224-word palindrome poem:
+ Show Spoiler +
"Dammit I’m Mad"

by

Demetri Martin

Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
Ew, a spider… eh?
We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,
A Goddam level I lived at.
On mail let it in. I’m it.
Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!
A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.
Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:
“Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”
Evil is a deed as I live.
Dammit I’m mad.

The "If I" series is excellent. I highly recommend watching it all the way through.

The Ricky Gervais Show (podcast and radio shows). The chemistry between Ricky/Steve/Karl is incredible--nothing I know has matched it. The podcasts are animated on HBO now.

I'm shocked at the lack of Jimmy Carr. Also, agreeing with Mitch Hedberg, Ricky Gervais and Bill Maher.
I know where my towel is.

My favs:

Gabriel Iglesias
Jim Gaffigan
Demetri Martin - I wouldn't put this guy on your ipod, however. He relies a lot on visuals to accent his jokes, so you wouldn't get the full effect just listening to him.
Looks like you mashed some poor fellers dog, Sarge.

Surprised there wasn't more mention of Bill Hicks in this thread. And definite +1 on Robbin Williams, Live on Broadway is top tier standup.

Very glad to see Mitch Hedberg and Louis CK getting some respect, though. I had no idea who Louis CK was until he went on the daily show a few years ago and started making jokes about wanting to kill his own kids. Instant fan =D

Kinda surprised to see Ron White get mentioned at all. Even after he got picked up for that blue collar show, he still never wrote anything new and kept repeating the tater salad routine every single time -_-;;

I'm pretty sure there was a blog about standup by mani a while back that you might want to look up if you feel like searching. Had a couple not so famous people whose names I have shamefully forgotten lol

I don't know that many english speaking comedians, but I like Dane Cook, Jeff Dunham, Lisa Lampinelly (sometimes) and how the hell come noone has mentioned Flight of the Conchords yet???
