This is similar to a blog where I gave some thoughts on the way many people say "that's gay." I've been giving a lot of thought about how people call each other retarded all the time... especially lately. Although, this phenomenon has been around since before the 'gay' one started up.

At first I thought you would call someone retarded, or call something retarded, when it's horribly stupid to the point that you have every right to be insulting it repeatedly. Then I started to notice that it gets thrown around much more easily than that. It gets to the point where you misspell a word and people are like "WHAT ARE YOU RETARDED? IT'S THERE NOT THEIR" when you just typed something into IRC real quick and didn't take the time to mentally grammar check it.

So what does retarded mean? I figured dictionary.com would be sufficient for looking up the denotation and I'd rely on urbandictionary.com to clue me in on the connotation.

According to dictionary.com:

–adjective
1.
characterized by retardation: a retarded child.
–noun
2.
(used with a plural verb) mentally retarded persons collectively (usually prec. by the): new schools for the retarded.

This isn't too helpful unless we are willing to also look up 'retard:'

–verb (used with object)
1.
to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.
–verb (used without object)
2.
to be delayed.
–noun
3.
a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine.
4.
Slang: Disparaging.
a.
a mentally retarded person.
b.
a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard.
5.
Automotive, Machinery. an adjustment made in the setting of the distributor of an internal-combustion engine so that the spark for ignition in each cylinder is generated later in the cycle.

So basically retard means 'delayed', and retarded means a person with a very specific mental disability (related to 'delayed'). This coincides with what I already thought; there is a 'retarded time' in physics which is a delayed time you need to account for in electrodynamics... and I'm sure it comes up in other places as well.

I then turned my attention to urbandictionary.com and went with the most popular definition:

buy retarded mugs, tshirts and magnets
An "unofficial" (not recognized by dictionaries) slang descriptor for a person/thing/action/object, etc., or a combination of, which is one or more of the following:

There are literally a thousand different uses for the slang version of "retarded" - (Quick note Usage-wise, it came before and set the precedence of the way we use "gay" in slang today - used correctly, they're practically interchangable.

"That test was really gay!"
"Oh yeah, our chemistry teacher is being retarded."

"Mary, stop being retarded! You're so gay, grow up!"

"I thought it was a simple babysitting job, but I was wrong. Besides all the other stuff, I had to clean up after the retard, which was pretty retarded. To top it off, he set the carpet on fire, which I had to put out with the flame-retardent extinguisher. And after all of that, the parents only paid me $15. Babysitting is gay."

This is a ridiculous definition... but at the same time it confirms some suspicions I've had: we call people retarded whenever they do something that is somehow perceived as wrong or culturally unacceptable, even if it was, in actuality, a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It also seems like 'retarded' is a blanket label for people whenever they annoy you or you aren't sure how to actually describe what it is that is wrong about the thing you are insulting. For example, if you hate this blog and then reply with "this blog is just plain retarded micronesia" you are not actually explaining what is wrong with this blog and are accomplishing nothing. Still, I fully expect people to do it. This blog is retarded. There I did it first.

I'm not really a supporter of calling things/people retarded even if you legitimately have good reason to be mad at them for stupid things they've done, but it feels like the word is just thrown around so much at this point it's not even worth saying it anymore. People are too lazy... and not articulate enough to actually insult each other anymore.

FlopTurnReaver, that video has a different goal but I guess it makes a point. I'm not trying to defend mentally retarded people specifically.

Hahaha good point. I haven't given any thought to the idea of people reserving retarded for when they are making fun of themselves... but it would probably bother me a lot less... in would only be a problem from the perspective of that video.

Is "retarded" ever used to mean what it was defined in the dictionary? I mean if we use "retarded" on a person who "delays the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.)", will they not take offense?

This is a separate issue but a fair question. It's kinda wrong to call retarded people retarded but I'm not sure if that's really a good thing... dunno not going to address this one.

I don't mind the use of this word ever really, it's only a problem when it's a persons only description of stupid things. Same with people that say faggot every 2 minutes.

Retarded is quite funny.

Hate when people say that something is "gay" though. Theses clichés about good/manly bad/gay are a bit sad. It's not even about the offeniveness, but rather than the stupidity behind it.

It's context dependent... it's very rare that retarded is the most specific word you can use... if you are looking for a blanket term to cover any of the reasons for insulting stated in the OP then it will have the same problems as the word 'retarded' does now.

Calling something gay is totally legitimate. I've been calling stuff gay for a long time.

I occasionally call stuff retarded, but it's an annoying thing to say... like douchebag. It's catching on me in a bad way. I'm going to conciously attempt to use the word retard less now.

For a long time before I became de-sensitized to that word I wanted to beat the crap out of anyone who used the word douchebag...

I'm getting the same way with retarded. No offence to people from the USofA, most of you are cool people, but whenever I hear "retard" or "douchebag" I think of some ugly spotty skinny geek teen that I want to beat so bad for using these words. I'm not saying thats appropriate or even accurate I'm just saying that's the image/emotion it conjures up for me. Particularly douchebag.

Ok I read the op, it seems you just have a problem with insults in general which I think is unwarranted. The only reason I can think of to not use retarded is it's insulting to actual mentally retarded people similar to the way people use gay. People are always gonna insult, demean, express dislike, etc, it's a fundamental part of socializing. If you think people are insulting the wrong things, such as what you described, stuff that's culturally unacceptable but perfectly reasonable, then the problem isn't one of diction but of social behavior, etc.

I specifically said in one of the replies (I guess you'll read those for next time??) that this is not about defending retarded people. I think you are right that this is a social behavior rather than diction thing but... what's your point? I don't have a problem with insults in general or... even if I do that's not the main point.

That's not my main point. I think it's pretty clear what I mean from this thread and shouldn't require additional explanation/defense.

Why are your repeating what he said etc but in an etc not really etc useful way? Because you don't want to stop etc using the word? Obviously you aren't going to etc because you enjoy being insulting to others etc so I don't see the point of your post etc.

What I mean is that anyone who has posted on this site for more than a few months knows that you just like to try to argue with everyone and stir up trouble as much as possible, etc, so I can't take any post you make seriously because, etc, I know that that's all you're trying to etc do.

lol... taking literal meanings to dissect pop culture slang and suggesting alternatives. Whats new? Strong English teacher vibe ITT.

Fun-sucker! Enjoy being articulate and your ability to use the dictionary while the rest of us don't! Feel happy in your superiority.

If I tell you you're a retard I'm probably not actually trying to have a conversation with you; I am dismissing you.

"That is retarded" is much simpler and it conveys a wide degree of dislike. Simplicity is key. If I call you retarded the ball is in your court, respond accordingly!

You think saying retard is retarded. You could have saved a lot of time by just posting that. We all would have received just about the same incentive to think about why it may be retarded to say retarded and contribute if our views were strong enough. Actually, I would have had more incentive because I skimmed. TL;DR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In summation, you aren't going to change anyone's mind by forcibly modifying pop culture via TL.net by trying to add complexity to a place where simplicity has not only been found to be much more manageable such as the internet, informal conversation, etc etc but has also been challenged by everyone from the parents of genuine retards to Holier than thou 14-year-old females which means most people will probably associate this blog to the fun-sucking speeches of the previously mentioned groups. Without a good approach you will just be lumped together with them. This leads me to believe that there isn't a forcible approach because we have already been inoculated and remain unchanged in our speech patterns. Surely TL.net is not the place to begin your retard revolution even if you had a magical approach that did not cause me to think of you as a 14 year old girl\English teacher\mother of a retard, TL.net is likely not the place to start your retard revolution. That said, these are just personal grievances with your blog. Be aware that many people lack the mental capacity or do not have readily available sources to back up their arguments but still want to express their displeasure. These people are your audience and you aren't entitled to pick and choose who expresses their feelings in a simplified form and which take a more lengthy approach. If you want to further investigate the root of these emotions\feelings than feel free to press them. However, understand that they have a decent idea going for them because starting out long-winded is a sure fire way to turn people off.

Recognition of the blog zone as a free for all for posting whatever you want to is a deciding factor on my approval of a blog's legal position. While it is perfectly fine for you to post this, I disagree on just about everything.

Alternatively, I could have said:

this blog was retarded! Then I could have went and got myself an aspirin for my caffeine withdrawal headache and moved on with life instead of typing a giant paragraph.

Simple simple!

Ok sorry I read the blog for real this time, yea I guess I agree with people being too lazy to articulate what it is they are annoyed with. But I think on the other hand, "retarded" or "gay" has a sting to them that other more specific adjectives do not.

jew/gay/retarded all have their "appropriate" and opportune moments when saying it at pinpoint timing and with proper delivery will lead to much oomph and lawlz
as long as there isn't an overly PC person to ruin the fun, there is no harm done and much fun was had
btw i am full supporter of gay rights, but i know when to distinguish between irreplaceable catchphrases (seriously, "that's so/hella gay" cannot be replaced with anything with equal effect) and actual serious social issues

Saying "The temple was filled with dozens of jews eager to celebrate the holiday" should be fine.

Saying "the clerk tried to jew me out of more money" is generally considered bad.

I've purposefully avoided the topic of being insensitive to others such as gays or jews in this blog but I do want to point out (and you probably know) that there are counter-arguments which I won't try to defend.

Every insensitive insult can be hilarious to some people... and some people argue that this doesn't justify their use. I'm on the fence about what I think we should preach but I also limit what I do just in case.

if nobody who hears it is offended (i obvoiusly would not make a jew joke in front of holocaust survivors), then it is NOT insensitive.. it is arguably crude
