just gonna get these hints out, if no one solves I'm gonna give one to someone and then just reveal the other one for whoever to claim.

hint, some of them are swapped more than once.
hint, some of them are not changed.
hint, I swapped 6 times.

http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=122423

..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

The hint "some are not changed" might actually lower the number of combinations by a bit.
Not a bit that I'd want to calculate, or enough to make this a feasible task, but a bit still.

the first clue in the OG OP, already reduces the possibilities by so many. The +12 does not go around the world.

Ah, see that is a good clue.
One that I had assumed from the start, but still.
That leaves what? 480 possibilities?
edit: less once you remove anything that has everything switched, but thats probably more than a 5 second calculation so I won't do it lol.
Oops, 720 now. There are 3 that qualify, not 2 :/

ok here is a really big clue: There is only 1 sequence in the correct position in the first code, and 2 are in the correct position in the second code.

Theres still a ridiculous amount of possibilities charlie, seeing as we dont know [i]which[i] ones you didnt change, we still have to try almost every combination

lol, this has gotta be the first key you can win with this kind of contest: endurance.

now we'll see who really wants a beta key.

Is 6 the minimum number of swaps needed? It seems that based on what we know about the number of pieces that are correct that it should be possible in either 4 or 5 swaps.

Are you defining swaps as only horizontal + vertical or is diagonal allowed? IE To switch block 1 code 1 with block 3 code 2, would you need to go through block 1 code 3 or could you just swap them directly?

I just realized there are 3 possible starters, which makes it soo many more possibilities.
Gave up again.

I'm trying to write a program to solve this entire thing, finding all possibilities then elimiating all the ones that can't work due to clues. I really hope they aren't revealed before I'm done... if I ever manage to finish!

No I mean, he added +12 for the first one so the only possible starters are:
X4WDWZ
YPR7MX
VV9EPE

But I missed the Y one when I first looked, which meant that I thought there were 2 and because there were only 2 codes each one had to be a starter. With 3 like this one 2 of them are starters and the other is normal, so you have to go through all the possibilities. :/

I'm finally done the program that finds every single possible key!
It's already 5 AM, so tomorrow if I have time I will modify it to apply the hints. Right now, none of the hints are taken into account.
Here it is, written in matlab, for anyone who cares:

You are welcome to use this to help you find the keys, on condition that you share one with me!

EDIT: TL formatting got rid of tabs and added smileys!
Considering how many more hints there are now than when I first started, this program seems kind of superfluous...

REDIT: Thanks CM for showing me how to format this properly!

You really shouldn't make something like this if you have a poor understanding of combinatorics.

I've pretty much worked out the other one too, but didn't want to be too greedy lol. So someone else must've got that too.

On the contrary, the fact that I am bad at combinatorics made this really interesting to try. Even though the program is inefficient, it works perfectly.
