recently i obtained a job at my local news paper feeding paper into a machine all night from 11 am until 7 am. anyone else have an incredibly repetitious, monotonous job? someone should give me some tips on how to fight boredom and the subsequential existential angst that is usually accompanied by jobs such as this!

or you graveyard shift dudes can just bitch about your job too :3

Mp3 player helps, if you need to hear low an mp3 player on low volume also helps. Does your job require you to be at attention 100% of the time or is it like do something every 2 minutes in that case bring a DS or a book. Bringing a book is keeping me at least employed for the time being.

yah man, i started working graveyards at cvs pharmacy about a month ago. it was super repetitive. i went and got an ipod and loaded up a shit load of podcasts, day9 dailys, the yale courses here http://www.youtube.com/user/YaleCourses are super cool and interesting, all this made the time go by super quickly.

i hate graveyards lol but an ipod sure does make them more enjoyable

product stock for Safeway from 11:15pm to 7:45 am here.

Definitely have an MP3 player with ya always, though just listening to music for 8 hours straight can become as boring as the job itself, so i like to throw in podcasts and comedy albums.

I also lucked out, i get along great with the rest of the night crew (except one old bitch who can die) as we're all like minded and have very similar (sick) senses of humor, so we get alot of laughs out o the night.

we're not allowed to use mp3 players, or allowed to read books. i basically stand in a single spot and feed fliers into a machine, i just have to keep the machine topped off at all times, it takes a certain amount of concentration because they put you on more than one machine at a time, so it can be rather hectic at times to make sure the machines dont run out. we also use really old machines so they get jammed a lot. its quite possibly one of the worst jobs i've ever worked. they also have one of the most malevolently placed clocks of all time, it's almost impossible not to look at it. so the shifts seem like an eternity. i finally know what camus meant by comparing the absurdity of existence with the modern day proletarian. fml

edit/

i also work with some of the most insane people you'll ever meet, but its interesting to talk to them so that's really my only saving grace so far.

I loved working nights. I don't know how I would have done it without an mp3 player though, thats what made it awesome.

I worked in a NOC (network operations centre) as the night shift guy for 2 years, at first is was dead boring since i do nothing but fix things if they break, but i started off by bringing a ipod, but it gradually went to laptop etc and ended up watching movies/playing games( i didnt slack off on teh work i was supposed to do though), the day they installed a video camera and told us no more laptops was the day i started looking for other work, since its just not worth it otherwise

Maybe you can explore other jobs? Honestly that looks like the most boring, mind-numbing job ever.

Edit: Oups nvm didn't see you were already looking for another one.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

I worked at a GM plant making insets for doors. 9 hours a night, 6 days a week. I stayed sane by talking to the 30 year old about life and a lot about video games, the girl about university and dating, and the 24 year olds about everything else.

I also taught the 24 year old high school calculus (seriously, from functions [vertical line test], through limits, first principals, to derivatives). We would study like 1-2 hours a day while on the line and we would do problems during breaks. He was trying to go to university and needed to take an equivalency test for calculus but never learned it in high school. We were about to get into product rule when I had to go back to school. No idea if he ever finished nor if he ever took the test and went back to school.

I work usually 25 hours on the weekend at Old Navy.. been there for 3 and a half years now and it can get extremely repetitive speaking with customers about all the same problems over and over and over and over and over.

However, my goal in life is to make people smile, and too see their humanity. So, I always go out of my way to find those who stand out.

It is rewarding to find those certain few that break the grain.

I always keep my mind on those sorts of things.

I work a seven day rotating shift in a factory in the summers. The late shift (10pm-6am) is my favorite and I really dislike working in the morning.

Technically we aren't allowed to read, but there's noone there to stop us. I read around 20 novels every summer during the nights at the plant.

I usually work alongside this 35~ year old guy who's into MMORPG:s. He started playing Meridian in the mid 90s (before that he played MUDs) and he hasn't stopped since, except when he goes to work where he tells me about his recent escapades in whatever game he's currently playing.
