You should have sat down next to her and talked to her about it. You missed a golden opportunity my friend.

What could you say without getting in an awkward situation?

"Do you like reavers?"

Seriously though, what would you say?

I absolutely would walk up to someone who I see playing StarCraft! Why just today I heard two people talking about the beta and overheard them, walked over and swapped stories for a bit. Now I've got 2 more practice partners Now you should definitely talk to this girl about SC, come on that's just common sense!

What am I supposed to say/open up with though?

"Do you like reavers?"

"Do you want to see my reaver?" Would be an even better one.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

It's hilarious to think that SC/BW has some kind of special powers to bring together 2 people. The person could have easily just as said to leave them alone or be annoyed all together.

I've would of gone the way of insulting her slightly "protoss is the easy race" and then go in with "do you play online?". I mean one she's playing a 10 year old game and two she is a she. You did miss a golden opportunity here. Don't know how this would of been awkward.

Should have just mentioned that you play too, then asked if she wanted to play...then you hit it

@op : I am new in my company and 3 of my colleagues play Starcraft. They really suck though, so we often play 1vs2 on Hunters after work.

Yeah but this could also not happen. There's absolutely nothing bad that could happen, the worst being told to leave them alone. Then you do and its fine.

But likely enough, you could become friends and everything is happy. So to OP, if this chance comes up again, just talk to her.

You made a major blunder here, but you can recover. Just keep going to class at that same time, if you see her playing SC again, do not walk by and sit in your seat.

I asked the only South Korean I know personally whether he knew of a 'Slayers_Boxer'. He said of all his friends, he was the only one who never got sucked into SC. :|

It was one of those massive introductory classes, and I only caught a quick glance while walking by. Yeah, I probably should have stopped in my tracks and said something, but it was early in the morning and once I walked past, I would have looked like an idiot trying to do a U-turn just to talk to a girl about Starcraft. Then again, its not every day that you see a cute girl playing a ten year old game that you have spent many hours grinding away to yellow ranks

I worked with four Korean guys in a research lab in the UK - they ranged from mid twenties to mid thirties. They all played Starcraft. For some reason, in the span of about a few months, there was a huge Korean influx into our research group. I was chatting with the one guy one day, getting suited up in those cleanroom bunny suits on our way to do some routine work, whether he knew about Starcraft - he was like WAH! You know Starcraft?! So I kind of did the intro to the foreigner scene thing, about being glued to OGN and MBC vods, etc. He got all excited, asked if I had a favourite player, was shocked and amazed to see that I knew so many, and he was nuts about NaDa. Anyway, with a general lack of PC Bangs in London we all ended up just playing LAN party style - a bunch of bloody scientists. Who would have thought. I guess stereotypes exist for a reason. Good times.

If one of them was a hot chick, though... damn, you'd have to use the jaws of life to put the brakes to me, man!

It's not hilarious. And it's not special powers. It's just like any other hobby. How many times have a guy and girl bonded over a favorite book, a favorite movie, a favorite dessert etc. Finding a common point of interest is a great way to start a possible relationship.

Yeah man, we have a bunch of koreans, but they're a really cliquish group so I really haven't gotten a chance to interact. In any case, not that many people at UVA play SC either (and although some of the koreans probably play, most of them are going to be D- casuals), since we don't even have our own CSL team .

What could you say without getting in an awkward situation?

"Do you like reavers?"

Seriously though, what would you say?

lol are you fucking serious?
you're a starcraft nerd, on teamliquid, and you can't think of something to say in this easy, golden opportunity?

say something like, "i bet i can own you (Race)vP any day"
she'll be like psh naw nigga
then ya'll go to ur house and u play some SC and get it on

Wow, I think your situation was "asking for it" more than mine was. At least in your case the girl clearly wants to share the fact that she enjoys gaming SC.

in many cases yes

I suppose the worst case scenario goes like this :

you : "Whoa, you play SC?!!" (etc)

her : "Um, no, it's my brother's computer - I just borrowed it and this cartoon keeps loading every time I turn it on.... creep"

The second worst case scenario goes like this :

her : "Yeah, chobo, and you're fuxing my apms...creep"

The third worst case scenario goes like this:

her : "Yes...." (keeps playing)

The fourth worst case scenario goes like this:

her : "Wow, you play SC too?" (chat, hang out, share precious but ultimately non-intimate friendship)

The fifth worst case scenario goes like this :

her : "OMG, HAWT" (rampant SC passion ensues)

...actually the worst-worst case scenario goes like this :

you : (...)

her : ?

Jesus, just say, "Is that Starcraft?" or, "you still play Starcraft?" Then just transition to talking about the game and how much that class sucks. ezpz

I refuse to believe you didn't sit right next to her and talk about it. If this didn't give you enough motivation to sit next to a cute girl then what would? I'd even turn around half way past her desk and walk back to her if I was slow initially.

Seriously, what does it take for you to talk to girl if that isn't enough!? need her to come post on TL about how no guys ever take her up on stripcraft bet matches before you make your move?

Even if you're in a committed relationship, why would you pass up a fellow sc player?

Tomorrow is a new day, and presumably she's still in your Chemistry class.

It's not yet Judgement Day and the Return of the King can yet be at hand. All you have to do is charge right into the Eye of the Storm, find your Fighting Spirit, and introduce yourself to the mysterious Outsider at the back of the class before the Shades of Twilight fall upon this opportunity. Lest it be nothing more than Fantasy, you must tap your inner Desperado and take arms against fear, your Nemesis. And should you, like Hannibal, fall at Carthage, it will not be said that you did not fight as though Chariots of Fire sped your course. And if at last the impenetrable Medusa turns your heart to stone and the Tears of the Moon fall upon the battlefield, yea, your final Requiem shall sing to the praise that it is better to have loved and lost than to have never played the game.

This is probably true.

Although for me I found a guy playing SC in my the school's cafe. I was walking by and saw it on the corner of my eye. I kept walking but yelled "StarCraf!" to which he replied "Fuck Yeah!". Don't imagine your situation going quite like this but don't think it would of been bad at all if you would of just said something.

"You play SC? Me too! That's really cool. Are you any good?" is a decent starting point. They key is to make it about her, and use SC as the ice breaker.

I mean, you already know there's one thing you have in common, which is a lot better starting point than you'll have with most women you meet, so just enjoy that and let her know that she's interesting for some reason other than your desire to touch her boobies.
Don't let me say this, but you're no worse than me; it's crazy.

How the hell did you come to the conclusion that this was a brag blog? A blog is where you can post something interesting that happened to you today. "Random people who play SC" didn't happen to me today. That would be a general thread topic. This occurred during my day, and I was curious if it happened to anyone else.

at the english school in NZ i went to last year i often looked around in the cafeteria if there are any korean girls playing sc or just watching vod's etc. but only some guys did

well if you wanna talk to her, just ask her if she got a beta key for sc2. if she didn't and you got one.. well think for yourself^^

ohhhhhh man, if you don't know what to say then just sit down next to her, look interested and say hi. If you managed that, it' would've been a win win situation already (allow bragging rights and your chance of hooking up is no longer 0%).
Korean girl + cute factor + SC fan/player = 15/10. She's already envious being Asian + cute.

Yeah, I guess your right, but don't call it a brag/girl blog lol. I'm not going to actually approach the girl, since theres almost no time left in the semester, only 1 more class until finals, and TL in general is not the place to find girl advice .

Eh that's true, maybe brag/girl was too much, but I just did NOT get the feeling that your main theme was 'random people', when your subject line and most of your post focused on it being about a female, so I wasn't sure why you were 'surprised' with the way the thread turned out.

Anyways, gl hf if you decide to make anything happen with it (even though it sounds like you've already made up your mind not to).

It's true that there's probably not that much point in talking to her now, but "talk to girls you know you have something in common with" isn't bad girl advice at all, if that's what you're saying.

Anyways, gl hf if you decide to make anything happen with it (even though it sounds like you've already made up your mind not to).

Thanks. Truthfully, I'm not exactly sure what I wanted, but I felt the need to share with TL something that happened in MY life related to SC (almost no-one in my UNI plays starcraft), but I didn't want to post a girl blog after all the times I've railed against girl blogs. So we get this blog.

Seriously though, what would you say?

Let's hope that class had doors in the back rather than the front because your story is BS if door is in the front of the class.

Ask her if she wants to PvZ. Beat her a couple times and watch replays together. gg.
PM me if you want random korean images translated.

That would have been the ultimate opportunity to take if you, or even anyone saw that.

I'd hate myself for passing out on a sweet opportunity like that!

making a u-turn wouldn't have been awkward at all unless you are really self-conscious.

just go up to her next class and bring up that you saw her yesterday playing sc and take it from there.

As a girl who plays Starcraft, I'd suggest just greeting her normally, then start off with questions like "how long have you been playing?", "Do you play on iccup?", etc. Get her battle.net/iccup ID if you can. It's a good way to know other people better. Invite her to a few LAN parties as a friendly gesture.

Save references to progamers for after you find out whether she actually follows the professional scene. Otherwise, it just makes her really confused.

Also, don't get too overexcited while talking to her, it'll make you look kinda weird. Near, or at the end of the conversation, ask her for a game then. That's optional, though.

Those reaver jokes or whatnot though, they're kinda creepy. Avoid using those in actual conversation: there's always a risk of the girl understanding them, and then good luck trying to talk to her later.

Last week when I was queueing to buy my end of year ball tickets, some girl I hardly speak to found out that I play sc2. She came behind me and punched me in the back and shouted 'You play sc2 ?!?!'. That moment in time was like ... omg I have found a girl who plays this. For the past week I have been playing so much with her (2v2), but she is too scared to 1v1 =//

I was actually annoyed because apparently she told me she was a huge starcraft 1 fan ... but she didn't play online or follow korean pro scene, so i was like hmmmm this is odd. It's good to know she can actually carry out commands in 2v2 sc2 though, was expecting her to have no idea about anything.

I'll post photo's from the ball of me, her and my friend andy aka. ''iG.rANDY'' if anyone is interested.

Korean or not, the subject is a girl, the OP is a guy, and SC was the window of opportunity. It's the principle of the thing.

Yes, I've spoken to a guy that I saw play SC in class. It wasn't a girl, but some korean guy. If I see anyone playing SC, I'd probably approach them and talk to them about it, guy or girl.

You should always try. Trying never hurts. If you don't try, you fail 100% of the time. If you do try, you have some chance of success, and heck you might learn something. It's win-win. So if the opportunity arises again, just try. I hope you still have chemistry classes left. If you don't try, you're misrepresenting your nickname.

You are 100% right. Normally I wouldn't approach randoms and chat to them. But, if I see any link with starcraft, I suddenly don't care and will go straight up to them and start chatting. It's surprising how easily you can make friends when starcraft is the common ground.

Since you're beinga wuss, you should try a more subversive approach. Wear a wrinkled shirt to class next time and when she's in earshot say, "My life for an Iron!" and see if her ears perk up. Or pick up your cell phone with a hearty "Hailing frequencies open!"

Not recommended:
"Wanna turn up the heat?"
"Gimme something to shoot!"
"We have you on visual."
"Jacked up and good to go."

How do people manage to get away with playing StarCraft in class? Seems like all the noise from the keyboard would make things suspicious (could be typing, but it'd be awful continuous); and then add in the mouse clicking which would make no sense.

Seems like it would be obvious as hell. That said, I'd love to see someone in class playing StarCraft. I'd be talking to him/her immediately. It's always super easy to talk to someone when you have a common interest you can use to open.

In a class with 200 people you can easily get away with anything.
It was a bit distracting when I'd see people playing WoW and Ultima Online in class.

Oh come on op! If the girl was playing it in class/b4 class, she obviously was trying to let people know she plays! You should have just said "Hey Do you usually play Protoss?" or something like that. Next time you see her you should mention the beta and see what she has to say about that lol Don't let the opportunity pass up again!

next time you see her, bring your laptop, set it right next to her, and say
"1v1. bo3 lets gogo gl hf."
jk. Honestly though I have never seen a girl play starcraft before.

I've asked every Korean guy I've ever met whether they play or have played starcraft, so far 100% success rate! Don't know any girls though.

It's pretty much one of the first questions I ask, before all the unimportant stuff like their name.
No I'm never serious.

Seems like it would be obvious as hell. That said, I'd love to see someone in class playing StarCraft. I'd be talking to him/her immediately. It's always super easy to talk to someone when you have a common interest you can use to open.

i would imagine the people who even think about playing sc in lecture have to be pretty casual players/ums players. The competitive players just seem the type that dont want any interruptions while playing.

oops u mad?

dude seriously you must have major social problems if you couldn't just go up and mention something about a game, in which you post 2000 messages on a forum about said game, to a girl in your own class. and posting about it on here obviously means you wanted to. just grow some balls dude. just say "cool i play that game too" or something. even if she responded in the bitchest way possible, which i highly doubt would happen, you have lost nothing.

i stated clearly why. the game is obviously important to him. he finds the girl cute. shes in his class, making her a peer of his, and then he goes and makes a thread about it obviously implying it was important to him. its not rocket science dumb-shit.

How do you know she is korean just by looking at her?

Oh wait..I already know the answer...you just assumed.

Also, funny how everyone here is suddenly James Bond, who will confidently and easily walk up to random women and talk to them. Yeh..right.

Yep. Also, I read the OP and the whole "what can I say that wouldn't be awkward" and immediately thought "Try likes this cute korean girl but nervous to talk to her" Then skipped to last page to see he a sad troll. Well executed one though, you have to admit.

2. Strike a convo
3. get her contacts and agree to play 1v1
4. loose 1v1 to a 6 pool
5. get pissed and leave without gg

That didn't work out as planned, yah?

Anyways, was trying to get you to go up to her anyways. I can see it now:

Try: "Hey!"
CKG: "hi?"
Try: "You told me to come up to you in class."
CKG: "Umm, no I didn't?"
Try: "Hrm... /facepalm"

Good bump Chill, i would have never read this blog if there wasn't le bump. I mean the comp stomp thing instead got me laughing. I don't understand how can people be so reserved, that they see someone they want to talk to and actually have the perfect topic - and not doing it

It's like you see a 100 dollar bill on the ground and just pass through...

Went to Chemistry today. Early in the morning. Tired, rainy, dreary day outside. Notice cute Korean girl who always sits at the back of class. Notice her laptop. Starcraft menu on screen. She plays protoss. Walk by and sit in my seat.

Anyone else ever notice people in your everyday life playing starcraft? Would you ever go up and speak to someone who you didn't know who was playing?

I'm flattered that you have called me cute

You should really come up to me next time!

You should have sat down next to her and talked to her about it. You missed a golden opportunity my friend.

What could you say without getting in an awkward situation?

"Do you like reavers?"

Seriously though, what would you say?

Are you serious?!
What could you not say without getting in an awkward situation?
She has a Starcraft Screen on her laptop, for pete's sake.
She's not gonna think you're a nerd if you talk to her about it when she's got the game running.

Nice bump, in the spirit of talking about random people who play starcraft I've got a story. I was at this international relations summer camp and this kid starts playing beta, I notice and go over to help. He's a noob but whatever, this Asian kid walks over and sees us playing and is like "is that Starcraft? I didn't know Americans played that". Turns he's Korean and just moved to the us. Well we get talking and I challenge him to a match (come on its my one chance to play a legit korean irl). Anyway he completely owns my with a slick arbiter build but it was fun anyway.
