I guess I’d like to talk about my experience with SC for my 1k post. I am not well known, nor am I a good player, but it’s been an interesting road nonetheless. Note - SC was not my first RTS experience, AoE 1 was. I loved that game, but was terrible at it. I couldn’t win against the computer unless it was an island map….. I got SC a bit after release, but before BW came out. I was about 10 years old. I wasn’t able to access the internet, so my experience playing was limited to the campaigns, and facing computers. I would usually lose to the computers, so I would play on island maps, where I wouldn’t die to any early push by the computers. I would attack with a dozen guys at a time, and then when they died, I would make a dozen more, and attack with them, rinsing and repeating as necessary. And I played Terran. My main plan was to make a bunch of bunkers and turrets to guard my main base, and then wait until I ran out of minerals to expand. I would just wait my opponent out, while they would foolishly throw units at me. To put it bluntly, I was terrible. I ended up breaking my CD, and not really caring, because there were other games that were taking up my time (Gran Turismo is one such game, I am godly at that game, and any racing game). Yea, I was one of those gamers….. Broodwar came out, and I picked up the anthology when it was released (SC + BW). I was about 11 at this point. I played the campaigns again, lost to computers 1on1, etc. However, I was able to get on the internet now. Most of the games were “NR20” on LT….. I got rolled every time I played. I still used the same strategy as before….. The UMS scene had just started taking foot in USEast, and I jumped in on it. I played some, and because they weren’t played as often as regular maps, so the strategies were vastly underdeveloped. Because of that, I was actually able to win pretty often. About this time, I took part in my first LAN. It was a lot of fun. I ended up winning about half of my games, which completely surprised me, considering how many games I would lose online. If I had to guess, I would expect my apm was about 40, and I didn’t use hotkeys….. Still terrible….. I ended up testing a lot of UMS maps, because I found it more interesting to find ways to improve someone else’s ideas rather than come up with my own ideas for a UMS map. I already had some limited experience with programming in perl and java, so triggers were easy to understand for me, allowing me to not only find ways of improving the maps, but actually suggesting ways to make it a possibility. One change I helped make was a glitch in the original “Zone Control” maps. In the original maps, you would die when your bunker was dead. The creator wanted it to be more like “kill every last marine”, but this posed a problem, because when he changed the triggers, a side effect showed up - you could kill your initial bunker to get up to +5/+5 and U238/stim, then make the bunker back, and be about 20 marines short, yet your marines were nearly invincible that early in the game. I proposed the change that was used to stop that glitch. Mind you, the newer UMS maps are far more complex than they used to be. And, then, SC got boring for me. I put my CD’s away for a few years. I took part in a few more LANs, but nothing serious. AoE2 was more fun at the time, somehow….. Don’t hate me for it, I was just a dumb kid at the time. Also, to note, I have never been a fan of Fastest or BGH. When I came back after a few more years (I was in grade 9 at the time), there were still “NR20” games, but they were far fewer than before. The UMS games captivated my attention again. I got pretty good at Diplomacy, Risk, and other UMS games that relied heavily on positioning and strategy, rather than micro and macro. I was invited into a few clans because of my ability to excel in these UMS games, but I always thought it was just a big joke, and never joined any. I just got back into it because a bunch of people at my high school also played SC and AoE2. We were always playing during one of our classes, the teacher knew about it and didn’t care. More LAN’s over the next few years, the occasional game online with a friend, and that‘s about all I did. Other things were taking up my time. I hit a pretty rough patch in my life. When I finally pulled myself together in grade 12, a lot of awesome things happened. I ended up making the high school football team in my grade 12 year, and in my 12+ year we went to the OFFSA finals (finals for all of Ontario, Canada). I was a starting offensive lineman, even though I was one of the smallest guys there (I’m 6 ft 3 and was 240 lbs at the time). Not only did I make a starting position, I did it with a cast on my arm from breaking it in the first game of the season. It was such a blast. We lost the game, but the year before, we did not get a single win, and nobody expected us to do any better that year. We did better than any team in our city had ever done, and so far, no team has done as well since. I was ineligible to participate in my 12++ year, so I helped out in a lot of other ways. It was such a fucking blast. I also became the unchallenged leader of the chess club, leading us on to our school’s first victory in our city wide tournament in almost 20 years (we had 4 players, the team that normally wins it has about 20, most teams send about 15, and the winner is determined by the total number of points earned by the top 10 players sent by each team - basically, the odds were stacked against us). We were doing so well individually in the tournament, so we ended up having to face each other on occasion, which made it even more difficult for us to have the most points. In the game to determine who the #1 individual player in the tournament, it ended up being between me and one of my team mates (we were both undefeated at that point). He practiced very hard for the tournament. I was never the competitive type, however, he admitted to me that the only person in the tournament who scared him was me. The reason he was scared of me was not that I would beat him if we had unlimited time, but because I could think nearly as well as him, in much less time. The most time I used in the entire tournament was 2 minutes (out of 20 in total, with my record low being 17 seconds with the 5 second delay for each move, and my opponent running out of time to give me the win), whereas he would typically use between 15 and 18. If I could prolong the game, he would be forced to have to move quickly, and it would be pretty easy to wrap it up at that point for me. In the final game, our openings panned out as normal as most of ours did, except I made a huge blunder - I fell for the queens gambit….. Honestly, losing that quickly was a relief, because he wanted the win much more than I did. Because of the scoring system, I ended up coming 4th overall, but it didn’t bug me. We still took 1, 2, and 3. University rolls around. Initially, I tried out for the football team (having been scouted by 2 universities, neither being the one I’m attending). Well, I got up to 255 lbs, but the next smallest O lineman was a full 45 lbs heavier than me, and 3 inches taller. I was a fucking shrimp….. I got my ass handed to me, and I got cut. It was probably one of the best things, because I could not have done that plus my the work required for my courses. I was unable to participate in any varsity football, because my schedule conflicted with their practice schedule. But I learned A LOT at training camp. I’ve been helping coach my brother’s Football team over the summer, and whenever I’m home. These experiences, as well as some others which I‘m not going to mention, ended up helping me out later. That’s why I’m mentioning them. About a year and a half ago, I get in touch with one of the people I used to play SC with. He’s gotten back into the game (he just graduated from UWaterloo), and we decide to play a few games, for old time’s sake. I end up getting clobbered by him (I used to clobber him). He sends me some you tube videos of the SC scene in Korea. I start playing some games on East again, and I keep seeing “1v1 obs” type games. Cool. I check them out, to see how others play, rather than play myself. They all seem to have the “ICCUP” tag on them. At this point, I still don’t know what ICCUP is, so I google it. When I realize how fucking awesome it is, I sign up immediately. Eventually, on the forum, a link to Teamliquid was posted. I had never heard of it. I check it out, and when I realize how fucking awesome it is, I start lurking. I lurk for a few months, having a lot of my questions answered through that magical “search” function. It’s like the holy grail of Starcraft information. I found some of the information confusing. I used to always get 1 scv per patch, 3 for gas, and then a couple for building stuff, and be content with that. I always thought that it was the most efficient way of playing. However, I kept seeing advice such as “never stop producing workers” and “2.5 per patch”, etc….. I wondered why….. So, I did a little research on some of the most common maps, and I posted my results as my very first post to this site. My posting history since then has deteriorated rapidly….. In my first season on ICCUP, I manage to stay a low D, using a touchpad. I start beating the shit out of my friend, to the point where it isn’t even close….. I was toying with him….. Yea….. That gives you an idea of how bad I used to be….. I think I scared him away from SC, because he pretty much gave up at that point….. I start watching pro replays, but it does little for me….. I still don’t understand a lot of the stuff going on. My second season goes similar, but I manage to climb to around 1600 pts. I’m mostly lurking on TL. Nothing interesting happens. My third season on ICCUP (less than a year ago) is when I decided to switch to Zerg because of the more forgiving macro. I had toyed with the idea before, because my macro is terrible, but here is where I made the switch. At this time, I discovered Day[9]. Almost overnight, I went from having a hard time beating D players, to being able to comfortably hang with D+ players. By the end of the season, I hit a solid C-, and keep it. I had so many epiphanies while watching him. I would describe my current style as “erratic”, there are some C- and C players that I can beat comfortably, yet there are some legit D players that I struggle against….. Honestly, I don’t understand why….. This is about when the first Ottawa LAN is hosted. That was a fucking blast, bringing back memories of my older LANs, except that the skill level is now higher, and more booze is involved (I downed a 26er of vodka in each of the first 2 LANs). We end up having 3 LAN’s in total this year. The guys that hosted it are awesome! I finally discover that the CSL had been going on. There’s some interest from a bunch of us at Ottawa U, yet nobody is standing up to take the reins. I’ve done some similar stuff, and I’m a man of action, so I jump on it. Seeing as it’s just a few of us, I figure it would be just for fun. My entire idea is to have everyone play an equal amount of games, and hopefully we could pull off a win or two. I had no expectations for the season. I wanted to play every game of the Bo5 for each match, to get the most games in. Then dRaW shows up. We have an easy choice for an ace player, who can probably help us get a playoff spot. However, my plan to play as many games as possible, and play everyone as equal as possible still stands (obviously some people were unable to play most of the season, or I would have played them more). I save our better players for our toughest matches. This ends up backfiring on me, we end up losing to Tufts because A)I underestimated them and B)they got a win when I expected us to win it. It had no impact on our standings in the playoffs though, because McGill and MiT both take down Tufts. I could have likely prevented the loss, but it really didn’t bug me when we lost. To give you an idea, take a look at my matchlist: We lost 3-1 v Tufts. Put the pieces together (yes, this is intentional smack-talk). When I asked the rest of the team who our #4 player should be (since we have pretty obvious choices for 1, 2, and 3), they unanimously voted for me. I’ve received a challenge for that #4 spot for this weeks game, and that’ll be sorted up tonight. Gooser, if you read this, probably be after I trounce you, now you know that I called it. It’s been a lot of work organizing the team. A lot more than Hazelynut said it would be. However, it’s been a lot of fun, and it’s been an interesting experience. Currently, I’m looking forward to SC2. I don’t have, nor need a beta key, because my comp can’t handle it yet anyways. I look forward to exploring the capabilities of the editor, more than anything. I figure that I’ll be terrible at SC2 as well, but at least it looks doable for me. Anyways, what I really got from my 1k posts. Here’s to another 1k posts, and more years down the drain playing videogames! | ||
