Think about it. Starcraft is a lot like studying. Obviously, if you want to get good, there is an element of competition---you want to be better than the scrub down the street, or you want to beat your best friend. You read about strategy, look at build orders, work on micro, macro, mechanics, develop a good mentality, solid regime, and strong discipline. You learn from progaming VODs, follow a favorite player, and basically work your ass off---only it doesn't feel like work, because you really REALLY want to get that D+ or B- on iccup, or you just really want to be the best freaking player you can possibly be.
I think being introduced to Starcraft can have a positive effect on most students' lives. After all, why do we work so hard at Starcraft even thought we aren't going to be progamers and make a living off of it? We do it cuz it's fun. But how can doing so much work possibly be fun?
Or maybe that's it. Before I got into Starcraft, I was a pretty poor student. I was lazy, never did homework, procrastinated like crazy, and hated reading. But after I started getting into BW I had no trouble reading about strategy and watching and trying to learn from progames. It's a lot of work, but I have fun doing it.
And a lot of the Starcraft stuff translated into my classes. I know I can never get to C+ on iccup, but getting a B+ on my next math test? Piece of cake. I know I can never be a progamer, but beating one of the best students in my class on a chemistry quiz? I can do that. But the key is: it needs to be fun. Only after I think of studying as a game, can I have as much fun and do as well as I do in Starcraft ))

i mean i guess i understand where you're coming from. maybe if i approached school like this, i'd do better. but comparing starcraft to schoolwork is just so odd to me that i'd never thought of this before.
|
I think the ideals of competitive gaming and studying are similar... and for sure if used in the right way can be used to improve yourself as a student. However chemistry quizzes rarely have such flashy lights and interesting sounds... and often people(myself included) find that although you can use the same skills to get good at studying, its just not as fun as starcraft.
|
maybe if you were as dedicated and had the same motivation as you did for studying as playing starcraft
it doesn't help if your finals are in 2 days and you're playing sc TTTTT
|
try to put more effort into school... in highschool you barely study in college you get fucked in the rear but its different..

StarCraft Counter-Strike
MUAHAHAHA I don't even remember if that's right. Also this doesn't relate to this topic 100% it's just something I used while in first year Calculus.

lol at the comment above.. maybe proves your point...

From my experience, SC stressed me out after i failed and failed and my grades went down for a while. But then you reach that first milestone, and some goals dont seem so far away anymore.
|
well yeah...makes you think a bit faster...
|
i wish i had the same dedication to school as i do to starcraft because i would be an amazing student. sadley i don't

Starcraft has never affected my grades, but Tetris has. Though I spend WAY too much time on TL, which is pretty evident.

No, it won't make you a better student.
Starcraft can improve your critical thinking skills, teach you about work ethic, and teach you how to handle a competitive environment. All those things are valuable for your job. In my experience, and note that this is just me, I haven't seen those things as being what gets you the good grades. Each school is different, and each program within each school is different, but this has been true in lots of places from what i have seen.
Getting good grades is really about grinding(studying in a repetitive manner). Obviously I am a little bit bitter about school. I feel like most schools set up their examination system to reward mindless memorization rather than critical thinking.
So maybe you should play WoW if you want to get better at school. Except don't play WoW...

"Studying" Starcraft throws your mind off of schoolwork and as a result, screws up your grades. This is from my own personal experience and my friends'.
|
NO. Starcraft fucked with my ability to concentrate on class. I started playing SC more seriously during my sophomore year and my GPA is dirt poor and now I'm headed to community college. My mechanics in SC went up while my work ethic in school went waaaay down. Thanks SC. :[

No but it can make you a worse student eazypeazy.

I got mixed feelings about starcraft and school. For one it has helped me with not really multitasking per say, but looking at things from different perspectives and using other methods to assessing my situation. I find that there are times where I panic less on exams should I hit that hard question that crushes my momentum.
On the other hand, playing SC is like grinding in school, you get better by playing it a lot. However, if you have a set amount of time in a day, grinding more in SC means grinding less for school, which is always a detriment. I can just imagine the amount of things I can learn if I didn;t play.
The reason I still play though is that it is for more relaxation and occasionally playing competitively. Regardless, playing starcraft for long periods of time will not help with school in the long run.
As for the person bitter about school.... dude what tests do you write? Most of my exams are not just memorization but hardcore application questions that combine multiple ideas together. Those are challenging and hard to study for but it seems more relevant. Besides, in order to advance you have to grind out facts so that you can apply them in future work. So its destined to happen in schools.

It sounds like most people learn a good study ethic, but have really bad time management (or misplace priorities) .

I don't think sc makes you a better student, just that the way you go about getting good at sc is the same as pretty much anything else. The key is motivation, if someone is motivated they can learn anything.
|
Playing StarCraft in and off itself won't help your schoolwork, all it will do is eat up time you could be studying or whatever. Getting too addicted could easily trash your GPA.
However, the approaches used to get better in StarCraft share some similarities with studying. For instance, learning to analytically break things down to fundamental parts is something you often have to use in school; especially in classes like physics, math, programming, etc. Also, the grinding needed to get better; such as dealing with big losing streaks, massgaming, reading tons of strategy, and so on probably helps teach you mental discipline as well as focusing over long periods. I don't know about you, but I find a 10+ game StarCraft session leaves me a bit worn down mentally, and if I don't really focus I can easily get sloppy and end up practicing shitty play, which is never a good thing.
|
Hahaha ohhh man...you haven't played enough starcraft clearly to know how badly it fucks up your grades. Starcraft and school just don't go together, period.
|
I think playing StarCraft competitively and analyzing certain aspects of it can increase your intelligence, but it's most certainly not a substitute for studying. Say two people had two years off school before they started college. One person worked fulltime and didn't play video games, and the other person played SC competitively and reached A-. I think the SC player would be more likely to do better in school. Especially thinking about SC the way Day[9] does for example. The analysis can be quite in depth, and it helps with your problem solving skills.
edit: trying to mix SC play time and study time doesn't usually go too well, don't get me wrong. I believe there are some instances where it would be beneficial though(see example above).
|
There's only so much that a method can do for you. I've been there. I've applied how I learned fighting games to almost every hobby I have.
In the end, it comes down how much time you put into everything.
Sure, having good methods can flatten the learning curve, but if you aren't constantly testing yourself, putting in the time as often as possible, then even the best methods will fall to people who just put in the time.

StarCraft fucked my second semester of my first year in college.
|
Eh how are you supposed to make studying as fun as sc

This. I think a lot about SC stuff and as a result I'm dying hard in precalculus (AGAIN, since I failed last year when I was trying to get to WCG).
|
Actual studying does you more good when you apply that to StarCraft, not the other way around.
|
It's true... I should be writing my Roman History paper, but instead I'm reading this...
Maybe we can use Delayed Gratification to motivate us to study?
Ex. No more Day 9's till I get this paper done and I nail all of my exams!
|
I think what you meant was "Can Trying At Something and Enjoying It Make You Better At It?" in which case the answer is yes. But otherwise nope, Starcraft and TL make me waste so much fucking time when I need to be studying for 8 am finals the next morning. Like now. Fuck.

Man this StarCraft guy is everywhere, ruining people's educations! We should beat the crap out of him! Oh wait, there was only you.
|
The two things aren't related in any way at all. It won't make you a better student and it won't make you a worse student. All you need to be a good student is a drive to succeed.
|
if you've found something that drives you to study and do well, then be happy about yourself because you've found something that you can be good at that really matters.
|
Yeah Starcraft and TL in general tends to distract from your studies (and finals)... You might be able to develop patience and mental discipline by mass gaming or something but all that time you spent playing could've been used studying.
|
How many classes I missed to watch the PL ? How many times I arrived sleepy at the exams because I played all night ? There is no way SC makes you a better student.
lol@ SC and C-S to remember trigonometry formulas !
|
Studying makes you a better student, not starcraft. -_-
|
playing starcraft will make become a hardcore fan, which will help you find hardcore fan bases such as TL.net. and with many smart and kind people on TL.net, you can get help on your homework. then your grades will go up.
|
Speaking from my own experience.. no =( Good way to procrastinate though...
|
Gone back and forth on this, and I think it is a mutual relationship.
If you right have the personality/work ethic, you will try hard and study hard , even in games. So in a sense you already have to have 'it'.
But I think sometimes all it takes is an in interesting concept or headfake to spark that .If you see the amount of effort dedication some gamers put in a "silly game", you might think "I put less effort into my future/education/kids/etc than some do on a video game. An analogous example would be like sports/athletics, to bring out that competitive nature and desire for self-improvement.
So they kind of feed off each other, can work together if balanced. However, as many have mentioned, if not kept in check you can just game all day and fail at life haha.
|
lol people who work hard to get meth and cocaine doesn't work hard at their day jobs...
but hey, everyone needs a reason to play SC

whats most important is that you have a schedule for yourself and plan out your time if you just do things randomly and spend all your time on the computer you really cant expect to get to far.
