You might be able to develop patience and mental discipline by mass gaming or something but all that time you spent playing could've been used studying.

If you right have the personality/work ethic, you will try hard and study hard , even in games. So in a sense you already have to have 'it'. But I think sometimes all it takes is an in interesting concept or headfake to spark that .If you see the amount of effort dedication some gamers put in a "silly game", you might think "I put less effort into my future/education/kids/etc than some do on a video game. An analogous example would be like sports/athletics, to bring out that competitive nature and desire for self-improvement. So they kind of feed off each other, can work together if balanced. However, as many have mentioned, if not kept in check you can just game all day and fail at life haha.
